The woman had a soothing voice. Unreasonably, Steve resented it. He wondered if she’d be calm if she had someone shooting at her. He strained to hear Lauren coming through what was left of the patio door. Yet he doubted she was still here. The sound of sirens split the air, bringing at least four guns to her one, maybe more. As much as she wanted to kill him, he doubted she’d stay and risk it. He held the pistol at his side and waited for the officers to appear.
