CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
Steve and Megan waited up for Charles and Rachel to arrive, knowing they would want to know why they couldn’t go home. When Steve apologized for the damage to the house, Rachel burst into tears.
“Did you think I’d be worried about the house? The house can be repaired, or even replaced. What about you?”
He put his arms around her. “It was a close call. But we’re all safe now.”
“For how long?” she sobbed.
“For always. We’re the good guys, remember?”
She nodded and dabbed at her eyes.
“Officers are stationed outside,” Charles reminded her.
“I know. I’m just so tired of being scared. If Lauren wanted to torture me, she’s done a good job.”
“We’ll be fine for tonight. So, let’s get you to bed,” Charles said. “They may catch her by tomorrow and this will all be over.”
