Chapter 1: The Return to Blood Rose
Lilith The highway north felt like a descent into frozen oblivion. Outside the heavy tinted glass of the black four-wheel-drive truck, the southern asphalt had long since given way to cracked, ice-sheathed mountain grade. Dense stands of towering black spruce crowded the narrow shoulders, their snow-laden boughs clawing at the grey twilight. Fog rolled off the rocky ravines in thick, sluggish waves, smelling of crushed pine needles, frozen stone, and ancient permafrost. Inside the cab, the heat blew warm and steady against Lilith’s boots, carrying the scent of dark cedar, ozone, and predatory wolf. Beside her behind the wheel sat Lucifer. He drove with one scarred, ink-covered forearm resting against the doorframe, his large hand loosely gripping the leather-wrapped steering wheel. At thirty years old, the Alpha of the North was built like a fortress of hardened muscle, his broad shoulders easily filling the driver’s seat. Every inch of both his arms was wrapped in intricate black ink—jagged thornwork, blood-rose patterns, and fierce territorial markings that disappeared beneath the rolled-up sleeves of his heavy thermal shirt. The glow from the dashboard highlighted the brutal, breathtaking sharpness of his features. A pale, jagged scar sliced cleanly through the arch of his right eyebrow, cutting down across the high bone of his cheek—a trophy from an old border fight that had nearly cost him his vision. In contrast, a small titanium stud glinted in his left eyebrow, catching the green dash light whenever he tilted his head. When he turned to look at her, his crimson eyes burned like banked coals in the cab’s dimness. Lilith felt the mate bond in her chest tighten—a thick, electric line of absolute possession that had snapped into place the moment their eyes had first met in the blood and smoke at Dark Moon. It wasn’t a fragile thing. It pulsed deep within her vampire blood, hot and unyielding, tugging her toward him with a dark, intoxicating gravity she had never experienced in all her decades at Ebony’s side. She adjusted her position against the leather seat, crossing her long legs. The fitted black denim and low-cut dark leather jacket she wore hugged every curve of her body, accentuating the lush fullness of her bust and the narrow taper of her waist. Her jet-black hair fell in heavy, silken waves over her shoulders, the vivid crimson streaks woven through the dark strands catching the faint cabin light. Through the soft fabric of her cropped top, the small silver stud in her navel pressed lightly against her skin, matching the subtle small silver stud in her nose and the small bar in her right eyebrow. “You’re thinking too loud,” Lucifer’s voice broke the silence—a low, raspy gravel that vibrated against her spine. The small metal stud through his tongue clicked faintly against his straight white teeth as he spoke. Lilith turned her arctic-blue eyes toward him, an arched brow lifting with cool amusement. “Am I offending your sensitive ears, Devil Wolf?” The corner of Lucifer’s mouth tugged upward into a faint, dangerous smirk. “Nothing about you offends me, mate. But your pulse hasn’t dropped below ninety since we crossed the northern border line forty miles back.” “I’m entering the territory of the most feared Alpha in the country,” Lilith said smoothly, though the rasp in her tone betrayed the dark current running beneath her composure. “Forgive me if I’m taking in the scenery.” Lucifer glanced at her again, his crimson gaze dropping slowly over her full mouth, the curve of her throat, and down to where her jacket parted over her chest before rising back to meet her arctic eyes. The raw, possessive hunger in his look was heavy enough to steal the air straight from her lungs. “You don’t have to worry about my territory,” he murmured, his voice dropping into a rough, intimate register. He reached across the center console, his large, calloused palm sliding over her thigh. The heat of his hand seeped straight through the denim, making her skin prickle with delicious heat. “You came north with me. That means every stone, every tree, and every throat in the Blood Rose pack answers to you just like they answer to me.” Lilith leaned into the warmth of his touch, her manicured fingers resting over the back of his tattooed hand, feeling the corded strength beneath his skin. “I’m not looking to rule your pack, Lucifer. But I won’t hide in your shadows, either. Ebony and I spent decades refusing to be kept in cages. I didn’t follow you into the frozen dark just to become a quiet fixture in your pack house.” Lucifer’s fingers tightened against her leg in an unyielding, possessive squeeze that sent a shiver straight down to her toes. “I didn't bring a quiet female,” he growled softly, his red eyes blazing with fierce approval. “I found my fated mate—a pure-blood vampire who looks at teeth and blood and doesn't blink. Anyone in the North who thinks you’re here to sit quietly will learn the truth with their face in the dirt.” He lifted his hand from her thigh, bringing her fingers to his mouth. He pressed a slow, firm kiss against her knuckles, the metal stud of his tongue piercing grazing her cool skin with deliberate, electric friction. Behind them, the headlights of three heavy transport trucks cut through the swirling snow, keeping strict convoy formation. Cerberus and thirty Blood Rose fighters were riding in the rear, returning from the southern clash that had broken the coven once and for all. The truck rounded a wide, sweeping mountain curve, and the trees suddenly parted to reveal a massive, snow-covered valley nestled against a sheer wall of black granite. In the center of the clearing stood the Blood Rose pack house. It was an imposing, fortress-like structure of dark cedar timber, reinforced black iron, and heavy alpine river stone. Three stories high, with steeply pitched slate gables designed to shed feet of winter snow, it glowed with amber light from towering arched windows. Massive wrought-iron lamps lined the curved gravel driveway, illuminating the drifting flakes that swirled through the freezing gale. Lucifer turned the truck past the stone pillars marking the inner grounds. The tires crunched over fresh gravel and packed snow, coming to a halt at the foot of the wide timber steps leading to the grand front entrance. The moment the engine rumbled to a stop, the heavy double doors of the pack house swung open. A dozen pack members stepped out onto the sheltered porch to greet their Alpha, their breath pluming white in the sub-zero air.
