Chapter One: The Unexpected Proposal
The ballroom glittered with golden chandeliers, their light reflecting on polished marble floors. Guests moved gracefully, laughter mixing with the soft tunes of the piano. To anyone else, tonight was just another grand charity gala. But to Elena Carter, it felt like a cage of expectations.
Dressed in a simple midnight-blue gown, Elena stood in the corner, clutching her glass of champagne nervously. She wasn’t from their world. She wasn’t born into wealth or power—she was here only because her best friend worked for the event organizers. Yet somehow, fate had brought her face-to-face with Alexander Knight.
He was every whisper in the room. Tall, strikingly handsome, and untouchably cold. The billionaire who built empires with nothing but ruthless ambition. His dark eyes scanned the crowd with a look that could silence anyone. Women longed for his attention, men envied his dominance.
And for some reason, those eyes landed on Elena.
Her breath caught. Why me? she thought, lowering her gaze. But it was too late—he was already walking toward her.
“Miss Carter, isn’t it?” His voice was smooth yet commanding, a tone that allowed no escape.
Elena blinked, stunned that he knew her name. “Yes… Mr. Knight.”
A faint smirk tugged at his lips. “I need a word. Privately.”
Before she could refuse, he guided her through the crowd, his hand lightly but firmly on her back. Whispers followed them, the envious eyes of women burning into Elena’s skin.
Inside a quieter lounge, Alexander turned to her, his expression unreadable. “You’re not like the others.”
Elena frowned, confused. “I’m sorry?”
“I need a wife.” He spoke as if he was discussing a business contract. “And I believe you’ll do.”
Her heart nearly stopped. “Excuse me?!”
Alexander stepped closer, his presence overwhelming. “Don’t misunderstand. This isn’t about love. I have reasons… reasons you don’t need to know. You will be compensated well, and in return, you will be Mrs. Knight.”
Elena shook her head, backing away. “This is insane! We’ve only just met.”
His gaze darkened, but his voice softened just slightly. “You think I would choose someone without knowing everything about her? Elena, I know your struggles, your debts, your dreams. And I know you’re strong enough to handle my world.”
Her chest tightened. How could he possibly know so much?
“You’ll have one night to decide,” Alexander said, pulling a small velvet box from his pocket and placing it in her trembling hands. “Marry me, and step into a life you never imagined. Refuse… and walk away. But understand, once you walk away, the opportunity will never return.”
He left her in silence, the box heavy in her palms. When she opened it, a diamond ring sparkled under the dim lights—so breathtaking, yet so dangerous.
Elena’s thoughts spiraled. Why me? Why now?
And deep inside, a shiver of fear mixed with a strange, forbidden thrill.
