CHAPTER ONE: Dreams Bigger Than Her Wallet
"Sometimes the biggest victories arrive carrying the smallest suitcases." The bus came to a slow stop in front of the huge metal gate of the university Elara looked through the dusty window, her heart pounding so loudly she wondered if the woman beside her could hear it. There it was. The university she had prayed for. Students walked through the gates, laughing as if they had known each other for years. Parents dragged oversized boxes while mothers fussed over bedsheets and buckets. For a moment, everything around her blurred. She had made it. She stepped down from the bus, clutching the handle of her small travelling box. The Harmattan breeze brushed against her face, carrying with it the smell of dust, roasted corn from a roadside vendor, and something else... Hope. She smiled to herself. "I'm really here." Nobody walking past could have guessed how impossible this day had once seemed. Just six months earlier... --- Elara sat cross-legged on the floor of her room, staring at the glowing screen of her phone. No admission. Again!!! Her thumb refreshed the portal for what felt like the hundredth time that day. Nothing. She threw the phone onto the bed and buried her face in her hands. "God... what am I doing wrong?" Outside, life continued as though nothing had happened. Children laughed. A neighbour's radio played gospel songs. Somewhere nearby, a rooster crowed, completely unaware that a young woman's heart was breaking. She cried until her pillow became damp. Not because she wasn't intelligent. Not because she wasn't trying. But because she had begun to fear that her dream might never become reality. --- "Elara?" A loud voice pulled her back. One of the university porters smiled. "Move your box, my sister. Others are coming down." "Oh... sorry." She laughed softly, embarrassed. She grabbed her suitcase and walked toward the gate. Every step felt unreal. She whispered under her breath, "Thank you, God." --- The hostel was louder than she expected. Girls laughed across the corridor. Parents argued over which room belonged to whom. Someone shouted for a bucket. Another person was already playing loud Afrobeats from a Bluetooth speaker. Elara found her room. Room 14. She pushed the door open. Three metal bunk beds. Cream-painted walls. One ceiling fan that looked older than the building itself. "This is home now," she whispered. She chose the lower bunk near the window. As she unpacked her clothes, a neatly folded blue blazer slipped from her bag. A girl sitting on the opposite bed watched her with a smile. "You really like dressing up, don't you?" Elara paused. She smiled politely. "I do." "You'll definitely be one of those fashionable girls on campus." She laughed. "I guess." But inside... Those words unlocked a memory she had spent years trying to ignore. --- "People are always complaining about the way you dress." Her father's voice echoed clearly in her mind. "I've tried to train you in the way of the Lord." She had heard those words so many times that they no longer surprised her. Every holiday. Every family gathering. Every new outfit. Someone always had something to say. Church members whispered. Neighbours stared. Relatives shook their heads. "This girl will become a disappointment." "Girls who dress like this don't end well." "Don't waste your money sending her to university." Sometimes, they spoke behind her back. Sometimes... They said it directly to her face. The memories still hurt. Not because she believed them. But because the people speaking had never tried to know her. They judged her wardrobe before they ever saw her heart. Fashion was never rebellion. It was how she felt most like herself. Every blazer. Every carefully chosen outfit. Every pair of shoes. They reminded her that confidence could be worn long before it was fully felt. --- "Hello?" Her roommate waved a hand in front of her face. "You disappeared for a second." Elara blinked. "Oh... sorry." "You okay?" She looked around the small room. The voices. The laughter. The excitement. She smiled. "I'm okay." For the first time in a long time... She believed it. --- That evening, after her parents had left and the hostel slowly became quieter, Elara stood by the window. The campus lights flickered in the distance. She thought about the nights she had cried herself to sleep. The prayers. The waiting. The fear that she would never get here. People had stopped believing in her. But she never stopped believing in the possibility that one day, her life would change. She placed one hand on the window frame and made herself a promise. "I don't know how." "I don't know when." "But one day..." "The same people who doubted me will know my name for something greater than the clothes I wear." She smiled into the night. She didn't know it yet. University wasn't just where she would earn a degree. It was where she would begin becoming the woman she was always meant to be.
