Chapter fourteen - Who is he?

2089 Words
Kevin's POV: Lizzy wants me to check Adam's dad. I'm not sure this is a good idea. He might be an innocent man. I don't have anything against him except for her words. He might have been confused. According to her, he was lying. I can't confirm or deny this. The other thing is that I don't have time for that. This doesn't mean I won't help her. I have people who owe me favors. I will ask one of my colleagues to do this. I'm sure they won't say no. She has something in mind. This is why I have to do something before her. I still don't know her well, but she is like me. This means that she will do something. The last thing I need is for her to get in trouble. That's why no one can find out that she is my daughter. Otherwise, I might not see her again. That includes Nia as well. She still doesn't know anything. That is why I'm glad Lizzy is keeping her promise. It's not like I don't trust her, but I know she doesn't like hiding things from her mom. It's understandable. I wouldn't like it either. Honestly, my daughter's words woke up my curiosity. I want to know who this man is. I have never seen him, but this doesn't mean he hasn't lived in the town. You can't remember everyone. Also, I was focused on something else. I don't know the results, but I should find them first. I hope that Lizzy won't do anything before talking to me. I showed the picture of Adam's dad to my team. They couldn't help me. None of them have seen Devan. That includes me. According to Lizzy, he has been in the town for a few weeks. She doesn't believe this. When I went home, I sent the picture and all the information I got to one friend. He said he would check it and tell me everything he could find. That's all I can do to help her. Hopefully, she won't choose to be a police officer as her future career. I woke up and checked the time on my phone. I have an hour and a half to get ready and eat. I went for a quick shower. Later, I got ready and prepared my breakfast. I checked my phone for messages. There were none. It's not like I expect to have some. My contacts list is short. Also, I don't have that many friends. I was about to sit down when I heard the front door. It was Lizzy. I think I know why she is here. Sadly, I have to disappoint her. My friend can't work that fast. - Come in. - Thanks. Do you have any news for me? - No. - Nice joke. - I'm not joking. My friends can't work that fast. Also, they have other work to do. - This man might be a criminal. - I have only your word. No one knows anything about him. - That is because they haven't searched. - No one noticed a crime or an illegal activity from his side. - Why do I have to do everything alone? - Excuse me. - Nothing. I'll find the truth by myself. - You won't do anything. Understood? - No. - What? - Dad, you can't keep me away from everything. I have to make mistakes to learn my lessons. - I know, but this is not how I want it to happen. You don't know anything about him. What if he tries to do something to you? - Something like what? - I don't know. Whatever it is, I won't permit it. - And what will you do? - Whatever is necessary. - Dad, please. I don't want to argue with you about that. - Then listen to me. I only want to keep you safe. - But you can't do it all the time. I'll be fine. Nothing will happen to me. I promise. - What do you plan to do? - Nothing. Yet. - Lizzy. - I think Adam wants to move to life with his dad. He liked his house. The man is rich. - There is nothing wrong with that. - I don't want it to happen, but if it does, I will use the chance to check the house. - Lizzy, don't do that. It can be dangerous. - I won't go to every room. - For once, listen to me. Don't do anything. - But I want to know. - To know what? - What he is hiding. There will be a proof in his house. - Why are you so stubborn? - You should ask yourself. I won't give up, and you know it. - Is there something I can say to make you change your mind? - No. I have already made my decision. You can't stop me. Lizzy stayed with me for some time. Later, she went home. At least, this is what she told me. I have no idea what her plans are. Also, it's not my business. One thing is sure. She won't give up until she finds out the truth. I don't know why she cares about this so much. It's only a man. The other thing is that she has never met him before. He is a stranger. I'm afraid that he might do something to her. I hope that it won't happen. After some time, I received a call. It was from my friend. - Hey. - Hey to you, too. - Did you find something? - No. - I knew it. - Wait for it. Your daughter got interested in a ghost. - What do you mean? - Exactly what you are thinking about. There is no information about this guy anywhere. I put his picture in the software so we can know his name. Nothing came. It's like he doesn't exist. There is no house or anything registered in his name. Maybe he is not Devan at all. No one knows. What do you know about him? - The same as I have told you. He has a big house. - Well, I guess he didn't buy it. - To understand that you can't find anything about him. - I can't even find him. - Is this a good or a bad thing? - It might be good for her, but it's suspicious. There isn't even a bank account under his name. - That is weird. - If he lives in such a big house, he must have bought it with money. - Maybe it's not money. - Then what? - I don't know. There is a chance someone gave it to him. - He must have been a good boy, then. - I don't care. Thanks for this, and don't search anymore. - Oh, I will. - Why? I will tell her that we could find anything. - She woke up my curiosity. There is something mysterious about him. - If you say so. Please tell me if you find something. - I thought you wouldn't tell her anything. - Yes, to her. This doesn't mean I won't know. - Ok, I'll see what I can find. Bye. - Bye. - I said and ended the call Do you know what this means? She has messed with the wrong guy. I hope he doesn't know about me. Otherwise, things will get complicated. I had my lunch. I don't know what to tell her. Lies are not an option. I will say that we couldn't find anything. Hopefully, this will make her give up. I don't want her to mess with this anymore. Sadly, she is the daughter of her father. No matter what I tell her, she won't listen to me. - Hey, Nia. Is Lizzy at home? - Yes, she came in five minutes ago. - Can I see her? - Sure. Come in. - Look, my best friend is here. I'm glad to see you. - Noah said - Thanks. I'm sorry, but how are you fine with all this? - What do you mean? - I came here often. If it had been someone else, he would've kicked me out. - But I'm not someone else. Also, I don't mind you being here. This is your house as well. - I appreciate it. I hope you stay behind your words. - I do, why? - You never know what might happen in the future. - Don't talk like that. We'll always be friends. After all, you are the only one who can deal with Lizzy. - I heard that. - Hey. - Hey, dad. What are you doing here? - Can't I come to see you? - Yes, but you are always busy. - I am, but I found some time for you today. - What an honor. Now tell me why you are here. - I told you. I came to see you. - I said and winked at her - I see. Then come to my room. I have some things to do. - You know I won't be here for long. - No, no. You will stay for dinner. - Nia said - I appreciate it, but I'll deny it. - Why? - I won't tell you now, but it's better if you don't invite me that often. - You are always welcome here. You can babysit the kids if Noah and I want to go out. - This won't happen. - I said, and she laughed Lizzy and I walked to her room. I'm glad that she understood me. I can't talk about this in front of her mom. I'm sure she has no idea that Lizzy visits me so often. It's better that way. I can't tell where I live. I trust Nia and Lizzy, but they mean too much to me. I can't let something happen to them. - Tell me the news. What happened? - Nothing. - Good joke. Talk. - I'm serious. My friend couldn't find anything. It looks like your Devan doesn't exist. - What do you mean? - My friend used the picture you gave me. Nothing came up. Devan might not be his real name. I'm sorry, but there were no results. Neither, does he have a bank account with his name. - That is impossible. There must be something about this man. He is not a ghost. I mean, he is a person. - I know, but he tried his best. I'm sorry. - It's ok. Thanks for trying. It's better than nothing. - Can I do something else for you? I don't want to disappoint you. - You didn't disappoint me. Let's say that I wanted to find something against him. That way, Adam won't move out. - So, it's official. - Not yet, but as I see it, he will do it. His mom talked to him. She couldn't do anything. He wants a better life. - I'm sure his mom is trying. - Yes, but she doesn't earn much. Share barely saves something. - I think you have to let him go. - Why? - Because that way, he will see the difference between his parents. - Maybe. The thing is that I don't want to visit him in his new house. I didn't like his dad. He is giving me bad vibes. - she said, which made me laugh - Sure. I bet he won't be at home all the time. - I hope so. - Don't think about this. You can't do this in front of Adam. - Relax. I don't have a plan. Yet. - Lizzy. - Don't try. You will waste your time. This is a mini copy of me. I never wanted it, but part of me is happy. I can teach her some things. Well, now it's not the time. I have other things to take care of. My mission is more important than this man, but I have to say that what my friend told me woke up my curiosity as well. A man who doesn't exist. At least, not online. This reminds me of my boss. No one knows him except for a few people. Even if I meet him on the street, I won't understand it's him. Lizzy is in the same situation. The difference is that my boss is a criminal. Her man is a father. I hope that she won't get in trouble because of that.
