The day of their project presentation arrived, and it went off without a hitch. They worked seamlessly together, bouncing ideas back and forth like a well-rehearsed performance. When it was over, Mrs. Caldwell praised them for their work, and they both felt the relief of having pulled it off. After school, Mateo suggested they grab some food to celebrate. Liam, to his own surprise, agreed. They ended up at a small diner near school, sitting in a booth by the window. Their conversation was easy, natural, and Liam couldn’t help but notice how much he had come to enjoy Mateo’s company. There was something about his smile, the way he leaned in when he was excited about something, that made Liam’s heart race. It wasn’t until they were walking home that things changed between them in a way neither could ignore. As they walked side by side, their shoulders brushed, and Liam felt a strange, electric charge between them. He glanced at Mateo, and for a brief moment, their eyes met in a way that made the air feel heavier. Mateo stopped walking, his expression softening. “Liam… I think this rivalry thing might have been a cover for something else.” Liam’s heart pounded. “What do you mean?” Mateo smiled, stepping closer. “I think we’ve been pretending to hate each other because we were scared to admit we might actually like each other.” Liam’s breath caught in his throat, but before he could respond, Mateo leaned in, brushing his lips softly against Liam’s.
