His voice was calm, but heavy...
“We tried everything… but we couldn’t save Sophia.”
Hearing these words, Stephen stood with his head bowed. Tears began to fall from his eyes. Silently, slowly.
Then he tremblingly signed the emergency consent form. The transplant process began. The complex operation lasted for about six hours. Time seemed to stand still inside the hospital. Every moment was filled with uncertainty.
Finally, the operation was successful. The doctors were able to save the girl's life. They looked at each other as they came out of the operation theater. There was fatigue in their eyes, but a glimmer of satisfaction.
At that moment, James was sitting under a tree outside the hospital. Darkness had fallen all around him. He was staring at the sky, silent, broken. Tears were streaming down his cheeks. He had only one thought on his mind. It was over. It was over for Sophia.
On the other hand, Stephen still has tears in his eyes, but a strange peace has arisen in his heart. He knows that Sophia is not completely lost.
Her heart, her face, lives on in another life.
This is her last gift.
The hospital corridor gradually became quiet. All the hustle and bustle stopped, leaving only memories and silent grief.
There is a strange emptiness in his eyes, but even within that emptiness, there is a little light somewhere. Even though one life ended, another life was saved.
James sat under the tree and still looked up at the sky. The stars in the sky were twinkling. It had been a long night, but tears were still welling up in his eyes.
James was exhausted. His body and mind were broken from the day's worries, tears, and mental anguish.
He slowly sat down, leaning against the trunk of the old tree that stood in front of the hospital. The silence of dawn had fallen all around him.
A light, cool breeze, dim light in the sky, and the soft chirping of birds in the distance. This silence seemed to soothe his broken heart a little.
His eyes were getting heavy, and eventually he fell asleep, overcome by deep fatigue.
Maybe even in the midst of that darkness, they are trying to find a little light somewhere. Because love never completely ends, it just comes back to life in someone else's life.
Dawn is approaching. The light is slowly entering the corridor.
Stephen sits quietly in a corner. Sophia's frozen body has not yet been handed over. The responsibility of the final farewell lies ahead. Stephen went forward to prepare for the final farewell.
James' sleep did not last long. Suddenly, a faint noise in the distance woke him up. James opened his eyes with a start. For a few seconds, he could not understand where he was. Then, slowly, everything came back to him. The hospital, Sofia, that terrible night.
Looking around, he saw that there was no one around. The dawn light was gradually increasing, but his heart suddenly felt uneasy. As if something had happened.
An invisible change, which he could feel but could not understand. Suddenly he stood up. Without thinking about anything else, he ran towards the hospital.
He stopped as soon as he entered the hospital. He heard some people talking. Fragments of words, but he paid no attention to them.
Now his only task was to bid Sophia a final farewell in a beautiful way. Thinking this, he walked towards the reception.
He walked towards a nurse standing in front of him. The restlessness in his voice was clear...
“Excuse me… I came to pick up Sophia’s dead body.”
The nurse looked at him for a moment, thinking. Then she said in a calm voice,
"Sophia's legal guardian was here last night, he gave his ID. He signed all the necessary papers and took the body away."
James seemed to calm down at this.
“Legal… guardian?” he whispered to himself.
His head started spinning. Sophia had never told him anything about this. All this time of relationship, so much talk. But she kept something so important a secret?
His surroundings seemed to blur. The morning light was reflecting off the hospital glass, but everything seemed dark to him.
A strange suspicion arose in his mind.
“No… something is wrong. Sophia never mentioned the guardian. So where did she suddenly come from?”
His chest twisted.
Wiping the tears from the corners of his eyes, he looked back at the nurse. This time, his voice was a desperate plea....
“Can you tell me... where Sophia was taken to be buried?”
The nurse was silent for a moment. There was a deep silence in the corridor. Footsteps could be heard in the distance, but at this moment time seemed to have stopped.
Slowly the nurse said,
“It seems that St. Mary’s Cemetery is near the hospital… maybe that’s where he was taken, that might not be correct. I couldn’t say for sure.” James couldn’t stand it a moment longer after hearing this answer.
He quickly left the hospital.
Outside, the sky was gray, a light cold wind was blowing. The morning fog had not yet completely lifted. There was a kind of solitude all around.
