TWENTY FIVE: CATASTROPHE Standing to attention all night had already become tiresome. Only the relentless rain kept Tobias awake. Still, even as the cool liquid tapped the brim of his hat and ran down the shoulders of his uniform, he felt himself swaying on the spot. Losing consciousness for a moment, he leaned forward, felt the sickly sensation of freefall, and shuddered awake. His crossbow clattered on the wooden boards and he fumbled to pick it up, peering along the sentry line to check that nobody had seen him stumble. Patrol guards were positioned only ten paces away on either side. Neither seemed to notice. The boredom had sent them half to sleep as well. Tobias puffed his cheeks. “That was lucky,” he mumbled. “Was it? Or did you just think you got away with sleeping on the job?
