Breaking the rules
Daphne POV
‘’My mission has come to an end!’’ I screamed out loud as I stood at the top of the tower that shows the entire city. I had finally completed my final task as a grim reaper after a hundred and fifty years.
A sense of relief washed over me. It was over - my long journey as a guide for souls had come to an end.
Being a grim repair was much more tedious than anyone could think. It wasn’t just about escorting souls, it was much more. Being a grim reaper means you would have to search for the runaway souls and watch as humans cry over their families while you escort their souls. It was one of the reasons why a grim reaper should never have any emotions. It was part of the reaper's rules and I tend to take the rule seriously because I wanted to be reincarnated as a human.
‘’remember Daphne, once you finish your mission, you will be rewarded with the ultimate gift by lord hades and it means that you will be reborn! ‘’Those were the words my senior told me the first time I became a reaper. I took those words seriously because I wanted to be reborn, to start over and see the world with fresh eyes - it was a gift beyond measure.
With that thought in mind, I felt a sense of peace wash over me. ‘’now what should I do today that I have completed my mission?’’ I looked around hoping to see or hear something that might intrigue but all I heard were the noises of cars and humans' never-ending chatter. It was nothing new and there was nothing that interest me.
‘’Maybe I should just stare at the stars,’’ I leaned against the tower and looked up at the sky and sadly, there were a few stars in the sky and no moon. ‘’what a boring world,’’ I thought.
‘’help me,’’ I heard the cry for help. I looked around wondering where the voice had come from.in a large city like that, it was hard to find just one voice except I used my reaper powers which are only needed anytime I was about to capture a soul.
I ignored the voice knowing that it might belong to any of the humans. I heaved a deep sigh and continue staring at the sky. ‘’help me,’’ The voice sounded as if it were in pain and it seemed like it was calling for me.
‘’help? A grim reaper doesn’t help,’’ I muttered to myself and then closed my eyes while blocking the noises of the humans from my head. ‘’help me,’’ The voice sounded again even though I had blocked it from my head. it made me wonder who was bothering me to help them. I fluttered my eyes open when the voice continued to resound in my head.
It belonged to a male who seemed to be in so much pain. ‘’let's get this over with,’’ I bite my lower lips and closed my eyes. I made a hand signal and placed a finger on my forehead. It was the way to find the person calling for my help. I searched my mind until I found him.
The man calling for my help was inside a car hanging on the edge of a cliff. The man was close to his death yet he was asking for help. He shouldn’t even bother about being saved because his life force was slowly reducing and sooner or later, the grim reapers assigned to him would appear and take him away.
‘’you don’t need my help then,’’ I muttered and tried to remove my finger from my forehead but I couldn’t. it was as if a force was stopping me from removing my finger. ‘’what the hell’’ I screamed out loud as it seemed as If someone was dragging me by the hand. ‘’just what is happening,’’ I shouted as I was pushed down from the tower by an unknown force.
I tried to use my powers but I couldn’t and just as I almost hit the ground, I miraculously appeared at the cliff where the man who had called for my help was.
I panted for breath as I was able to remove my fingers from my forehead. ‘’what the hell was that?’’ I questioned myself and just then, the voice sounded again begging for me to save him.
The car was teetering precariously at the edge of the drop, held in place by nothing more than a few scrappy bushes and some loose gravel. My eyes traced the outline of the vehicle, taking in the shattered windows, the dented doors, and the twisted metal that bent and curled in on itself like an angry beast. It looked like it had been in a terrible accident, and I couldn't help but wonder how it had even ended up in such a perilous position.
Then I saw him. The man inside the car, slumped over the steering wheel, his head resting against the shattered glass. Blood oozed from a gash on his forehead, running in rivulets down his face and neck, staining his shirt and pooling on the floor. He was unconscious, or maybe even dead, and I heaved a deep sigh knowing that he was fated to die.
‘’please help me,’’ his voice sounded in my head even though he wasn’t talking. I knew that it was impossible for a human to able to get into other people’s thoughts and that could only happen if he was not a human.
We lived in a fantasy world so I wasn’t surprised if he was a werewolf, demon, or even a vampire.
‘’I would have loved to help you but I am sorry that my hands are tied. You are fated to die and I would only be going against the rules of the reapers if I save your life.’’
Yes, the first rule of the reapers. ‘’never meddle in the affairs of the living!’’ it was the rule that had made me successful in all of my missions. I never meddle in the affairs of anyone bound to die but something, an attraction maybe made me move closer to the door. It was as if I was under a spell.
I swallowed hard, taking a deep breath and steeling myself for what I had to do. Without a second thought, I stepped forward, my feet sliding on the loose gravel, my hands outstretched. I reached for the door handle, my fingers closing around the cold metal, and pulled. The door creaked open, revealing the man who was inside the car.
‘’what the hell are you doing Daph?’’ I asked myself as I pulled the unknown man from inside the car and fell back onto the ground with him in my arms, just as the car plummeted over the edge of the cliff.
Suddenly, there was a deafening screech of metal against the rock as the car hit the edge of the cliff. I could hear it shattering into pieces and falling towards the ground far below.
For a moment, there was silence. I lay on the ground, panting, my heart pounding in my chest. I looked down at the man in my arms, fearing the worst.
But then I saw his chest rise and fall, and I knew he was alive. With a sense of relief flooding through me, I carefully lowered the man to the ground and started to check him for injuries. He had a huge gash on his forehead and on his chest was a silver dagger on his chest.
What the hell did I even do? I looked at the man’s face and wondered about the kind of charm he had used on me. I had broken the reaper's rules for him, a rule that I had followed for years.
Just who the hell is this man? I stared at his oval-shaped face covered in his blood. ‘’who are you?’’ I stretched forth my hand to touch his face but he grabbed my hand.
‘’please save me,’’ He begged to sound just like when he was in my head.
‘’who are you?’’ I asked him intrigued by what I was doing there when I should let him die and let the grim reapers take over his soul.
‘’There is someone that I must protect and I can't die now,’’ he begged and spat out blood. ‘’please save my life,’’ his tone became weaker and I was mesmerized by him. It was dark and the only reason why I could see him was that I was using my reaper power as a source of light.
‘’I don’t save people and you are near your death so accept your fate,’’ I told him and tried to get up but he grabbed my hand and pulled me back. ‘’what the hell are you doing?’’ I yelled at him wondering how a wounded man like him still had the power to be able to move.
‘’There is someone that I must protect and you are the only one who can help me and…’’ he lets go of my hand as he coughed out blood. ‘’please save my life,’’ he begged.
I stared at him feeling a wave of emotions clouding my mind. I had never felt that way before. For me, saving lives was a no. It was just about escorting the souls but I couldn’t just leave the man when he had someone he wanted to protect.
‘’I shouldn’t be doing this but I understand you because years ago, I tried to protect someone and I failed terribly,’’ I reminisced the memory of not being able to save my little sister. I placed one of my hands on his chest and used another to yank the dagger from his chest. His screams echoed throughout the forest. Blood pooled out of his chest and I moved to action.
‘’I am sorry that I broke the rules,’’ I muttered and placed my hand on his chest using my powers to heal him. ‘’here goes nothing!’’ I muttered as I channeled a huge amount of my energy to his chest. It was a dangerous move, one that could have serious consequences for me, but I couldn't just let him die after he had told me that he had someone he wanted to protect.
As I focused all my energy on the man, I felt a chill run down my spine. The grim reapers had arrived and It felt familiar. The grim reaper leading them was Denzel, the ruthless reaper.
I looked up and saw them materializing out of thin air, their black hooded robes billowing in the wind. Their faces were hidden behind shadowy veils, but I could feel their disapproval.
I knew I wasn't supposed to be using my powers like this. I was supposed to follow the rules, like all the other reapers who had ever existed.
Denzel and the other grim reapers moved towards me, their steps silent as they approached. I could feel their eyes on me, their judgment weighing heavy on my shoulders.
But I didn't care. I was too focused on the man at my feet, trying to revive him. With every passing second, I felt my life force draining away. I knew I couldn't keep this up for much longer.
And then, it happened. The man's eyes fluttered open, and he gasped for air. I felt a surge of relief flood through me. I had done it. I had saved him.
The grim reapers were still there, watching me, waiting. I knew I had to face them eventually, but for now, I didn't care. I had done what I had set out to do, and that was all that mattered.
‘’Daphne,’’ Denzel said my name maliciously. ‘’what a stupid thing you have done!’’
