The Scent of Copper and Ash
Lyra Stone knelt in the damp moss beneath the shadow of a fallen oak, her fingers working with practiced, precise speed. Blood pooled around the shredded linen of a young rogue’s thigh, dark and hot against the freezing mud. The mountain air bit into her exposed hands, but she barely felt the chill. In the quiet gloom of the borderlands, survival was measured in fractions of a second.
"Keep your jaw shut, Val," Lyra muttered, her voice a low, steady command as she pulled a silver curved needle through the torn muscle. "If you scream, the patrol will be on us before I can knot the thread."
The young wolf gritted his teeth, his pale face slick with cold sweat. "They're hunting us like dogs, Lyra. Alpha Gideon’s men... they aren't taking prisoners tonight. They're slaughtering anyone who crosses the ridge."
"Gideon is a tyrant who fears anything he can't leash," Lyra said bitterly, pulling the knot tight and slicing the thread with a small bone-handled blade. "Hold this bandage. Firm pressure."
As the pack medic for the Silver Shadow Pack, Lyra was supposed to be asleep in her cottage near the village perimeter. Instead, she had spent the last three hours slipping through patrol lines to tend to the unsanctioned casualties the rogue wolves hunted down by Gideon’s enforcers. She suppressed her own scent using a paste made of crushed silver-leaf and ash, a secret recipe that kept both her presence and her heritage entirely hidden. To the world, she was just an ordinary, low ranking half blood medic. Convenient. Unremarkable. Safe.
A sudden shift in the wind carried the sharp, metallic tang of ozone and raw fury.
The forest went deathly silent. The nocturnal insects stopped their hum. The temperature dropped so fast Lyra’s breath bloomed in a thick white cloud. A weight settled over the clearing, heavy enough to crush the lungs of a lesser wolf.
"Lyra..." Val whimpered, his eyes dilating in sheer terror as his inner beast cowered against his ribs. "It's not Gideon's men."
Before Lyra could rise, a massive shadow detached itself from the high canopy above.
A monstrous figure slammed into the clearing with enough force to vibrate the earth beneath her knees. It was a Lycan towering over seven feet tall, clad in blackened leather and heavy iron pauldrons forged in mountain fire. A jagged scar ran from his right temple down to his jawline, crossing a closed, milky eye, while his left eye burned like molten gold in the moonlight.
Alpha Kaelen Vance. The King of the Outcast Lycans.
Lyra’s breath hitched. Rumors of the scarred monarch had reached even the most isolated borders. He was a war god, a ruthless butcher who commanded the rogue territories with an iron claw and zero mercy for trespassers.
Kaelen’s single golden eye swept over the clearing, landing on Val, then locking onto Lyra. He moved with impossible, terrifying speed a blur of broad shoulders and dark leather. Before Lyra could reach for the silver daggers strapped to her thigh, a massive, calloused hand clamped around her right wrist.
The moment his bare skin touched hers, a shockwave of raw energy exploded through her veins.
It wasn't just heat it was a roaring, blinding fire that consumed every inch of her skin. Her chest heaved as her heart hammered violently against her ribs, the suppressed scent of her wolf bursting through her herbal salve in a wave of wild jasmine and crushed frost. The air between them crackled with invisible lightning, forcing the breath straight out of her lungs.
Mate.
The word echoed in the deep recesses of her mind, heavy, ancient, and unmistakable.
Kaelen froze. His golden eye widened, flashing a fierce, glowing amber as his fangs elongated beneath his upper lip. He stared at her wrist, then up at her face, his grip tightening just enough to pin her in place without snapping her bones. A low, thunderous growl ripped from his chest not of joy or relief, but of absolute, bitter fury.
"No," Kaelen’s rasping voice sounded like grinding stones in an abyss. "Not you."
"Get your hands off me!" Lyra snarled, fighting against the blinding electricity surging between their skin. She drove her heel down toward his boot, but he absorbed the blow without flinching.
Ten years ago, Kaelen had been betrayed by a woman who claimed to be his mate a betrayal that cost him his eye, his pack's lands, and half his warriors. He had sworn never to be bound by fate again, carving a legacy of blood and iron to prove he needed no bond to rule.
"You're coming with me, medic," Kaelen growled, wrenching her arm back and hauling her violently against his chest.
"I am not your property, Alpha!" Lyra spat, plunging her hidden bone blade toward his exposed neck.
Kaelen caught her wrist mid-air, squeezing until the blade slipped from her fingers and thudded into the mud below. With a swift, merciless motion, he threw her over his shoulder like a sack of grain, his iron arm locking her legs in place against his chest.
"Call it what you want," Kaelen barked, turning toward the dark expanse of the mountain pass as his armed warriors emerged from the treeline to secure the perimeter. "You're a prisoner of war now."
