The reading began.
Not through the membrane — not yet. First the frame, the bone structure that held the membrane stretched. The frame was the oldest part, the foundation of the construction, and reading it gave me the shape of the whole before I entered the detail.
The frame was made from a single piece of bone.
One continuous piece, bent into its rectangular shape rather than assembled from multiple sections. The gift identified the source immediately — not human bone, not wolf bone, not any creature I had a specific reference for. The bone of something that existed only in the moon goddess's original act of making, before she made anything that walked in the world.
