Forty-Six Miranda scanned the faces of the wardens who scurried out of her way as she stormed down the hall. Most avoided her eyes; the few that did meet her gaze did so with deliberately blank expressions. Combined with the snippets of conversations she’d overheard throughout the day, she knew her people were shaken, their faith in her leadership tested. She’d made many mistakes since becoming captain, the worst being to keep Jackson alive. When he was executed, they would see she had their best interests at heart—that she was willing to make hard choices.
