Chapter 1: The Enemy's Captive
---
The arrow whistled past my ear, embedding itself in the tree beside me with a sickening thud.
I didn't flinch.
I was too busy driving my blade into the throat of the Darkclaw warrior who had dared to attack me. His eyes went wide with shock, a gurgling sound escaping his lips as he crumpled to the forest floor, blood pooling beneath him.
"Sera! Fall back!"
My brother Orion's voice cut through the chaos of battle. I turned, counting my breaths, scanning the blood-soaked clearing around me.
We had been ambushed.
The Darkclaw Pack had been waiting for us at the border — a trap we had walked straight into. Now warriors from both packs were locked in brutal combat. Teeth and claws tore through flesh. Screams echoed through the ancient trees. The metallic scent of blood hung heavy in the air.
I wiped the crimson from my face and sprinted toward Orion. "We need to retreat! They outnumber us —"
Before I could finish, a massive body slammed into me from the side.
I hit the ground hard, the air exploding from my lungs. My sword skittered across the dirt, out of reach. I gasped, struggling to breathe, as a heavy weight pressed me into the cold earth.
I looked up.
A pair of cold, deadly eyes stared down at me. Steel-gray. Unforgiving. Ancient.
*The Alpha.*
Draven Blackthorn.
I knew him from the wanted posters, from the stories whispered around campfires late at night. He was the most feared wolf in the region — a ruthless killer who had never lost a battle. They said he had torn apart his own father to claim the Alpha title. They said he had never shown mercy to a single enemy.
And now he was pinning me to the ground, his claws pressing against my throat, drawing a thin line of blood.
"Sera!" Orion screamed. He tried to reach me, but a wall of Darkclaw warriors blocked his path. I watched him fight, desperate and furious, but there were too many of them.
Draven's lips curled into a cruel smirk. "So," he rumbled, his voice like gravel and thunder. "You're the one who killed three of my best warriors tonight."
I spat blood at his face. "I'd kill three more if I had the chance."
His smirk didn't fade. Instead, something else flickered in his eyes. Something curious. Almost... amused.
"Feisty," he murmured. "I like that."
He grabbed my wrist, hauling me to my feet with brutal strength. Before I could fight back, he had my arms twisted behind my back, his iron grip holding me captive. His claws bit into my skin, but I refused to cry out.
"Take the rest of the Silvermoon dogs," he ordered his warriors. "Kill the ones who resist. Spare the ones who surrender."
"No!" I screamed, thrashing against him. "Don't touch my pack! I'll kill you! I swear I'll —"
"Silence, Beta," Draven growled, his voice dropping dangerously low. "Or I'll slit your throat right here and now."
I froze.
The look in his eyes said he meant every word. There was no hesitation, no mercy. Just cold, calculating darkness.
I watched in horror as my pack mates were dragged away — some bleeding, some unconscious, a few already dead. Their bodies were left in the mud like discarded trash. My heart shattered with every scream I heard.
Orion was still fighting, still screaming my name.
"Sera! Stay strong! I'll come back for you! I promise —"
A Darkclaw warrior smashed the hilt of his sword against Orion's head. He crumpled like a broken doll, his body falling limp.
"ORION!"
I tried to run to him, but Draven's grip was like iron. He held me in place as my brother was dragged away, unconscious and bleeding.
"Let me go!" I shrieked. "I'll kill you! I swear to the Moon Goddess, I will tear your heart out with my bare hands!"
Draven laughed — a cold, humorless sound. "You'll have to survive first."
He dragged me through the forest, past the bodies of fallen warriors, past the burning remains of our camp. The moonlight filtered through the trees, casting eerie shadows across his face.
I struggled the entire way, kicking, biting, screaming. But Draven was stronger. He didn't even seem to notice my efforts.
We arrived at the Darkclaw Pack's territory — a massive fortress carved into the side of a mountain. Towers of black stone rose against the night sky. Hundreds of wolves patrolled the walls, their eyes glowing in the darkness.
This was the heart of enemy territory.
And I was their prisoner.
---
I woke up in chains.
Cold iron bit into my wrists and ankles, holding me spread-eagled against a stone wall. The room was dark, damp, and smelled of old blood and fear.
*A dungeon.*
I was in the Darkclaw Pack's dungeons.
I tugged at the chains, testing their strength. They didn't budge. I growled in frustration, my wolf pacing inside me, desperate to shift and tear everything apart.
But I couldn't shift. The chains were enchanted — woven with wolfsbane and silver. Every time I tried to call my wolf forward, agony shot through my veins.
*Damn them. Damn them all.*
I hung my head, tears of rage streaming down my face. My pack was dead or captured. My brother was wounded, perhaps dying. And I was trapped in enemy territory, helpless and broken.
*I will survive this. I will escape. And I will make Draven Blackthorn pay for every drop of blood he has spilled.*
The heavy iron door creaked open.
Draven Blackthorn stepped inside, his massive frame filling the doorway. He had changed out of his battle armor, wearing a simple black tunic that did nothing to hide the power coiled beneath his muscles. His steel-gray eyes swept over me, cold and calculating.
"You're awake," he observed, his voice flat. "Good. I have questions."
I glared at him, my hatred burning like wildfire. "I have nothing to say to you, murderer."
Draven raised an eyebrow. "Murderer? I'm not the one who killed three of my warriors tonight."
"Your warriors attacked us," I spat. "We were defending ourselves."
"We were defending our border," Draven countered coldly. "Your pack crossed into our territory. That's an act of war."
I opened my mouth to argue, but the truth tasted bitter on my tongue. My Alpha had been pushing for a fight — testing the Darkclaw Pack's defenses. This time, we had gone too far.
"We didn't know," I said quietly. "Our Alpha... he told us this was still our land."
Draven laughed — a cold, humorless sound that echoed off the stone walls. "Your Alpha lied to you. He sent you to die on a suicide mission."
"He would never —"
"He did." Draven stepped closer, his steel-gray eyes boring into mine. "Your Alpha wanted a reason to go to war. He offered you up as bait. He knew you would be captured or killed. And he was counting on it."
The words hit me like a physical blow.
I had always trusted Alpha Aldric. He was like a father to me. He had raised me after my parents died. He had trained me, protected me, and given me a purpose.
But Draven's words rang with a terrible truth.
"Even if that's true," I said, lifting my chin defiantly, "it changes nothing. You and I are enemies. I'll never bow to you. I'll never beg for mercy. I'd rather die."
Draven studied me for a long moment.
And then he did something I didn't expect.
He smiled.
A slow, dangerous smile that made my skin prickle with unease.
"You hate me," he said softly. "I can see it in your eyes. You hate everything I stand for. You'd kill me right now if you could."
"Gladly," I snarled.
"The feeling is mutual," Draven admitted. "I should kill you. I should use you as a bargaining chip to force your pack to surrender."
He took another step closer. His scent washed over me — pine, smoke, and something wild and untamed.
"But something's stopping me."
His eyes flickered — something dark and primal passing through them.
I felt it then.
A pulse. A pull. A strange, magnetic force that tugged at my chest.
*No.*
*No, no, no.*
Draven's jaw tightened. His pupils dilated. His breath hitched in his throat. I saw the same realization hit him like a thunderbolt.
"The Moon Goddess," he breathed, his voice barely audible. "She wouldn't. She couldn't —"
But she had.
The mate-bond snapped into place between us like a blazing fire.
I screamed.
"No! I reject this! I reject you!"
I thrashed against my chains, desperate to escape. But the iron held firm. My wolf howled inside me, confused and terrified. How could fate do this? How could the Moon Goddess bind me to my worst enemy?
Draven's eyes blazed with anger and something else — something raw and desperate. His hands trembled at his sides.
"You can't reject what fate has decided," he growled. "You're mine, Sera. Whether you like it or not."
He reached out and grabbed my chin, forcing me to meet his gaze. His touch burned against my skin.
"And I never let go of what's mine."
I pulled away, spitting at his feet. "I'll never be yours. I'll never love you. I'll never stop fighting you, Draven Blackthorn. I will escape this place, and I will destroy you."
Something flickered in his eyes. Pain? Regret? I couldn't tell.
"Then fight me," he said softly. "Fight me with everything you have. Because I'm not letting you go. Not now. Not ever."
