Staring into her morning creamer, fate felt like screaming. She had been through one of the longest lecturers in her life. As an archaeologist student she dreamed of discovering something new, something that belonged just to her. She lived with her adopted parents from the age of ten after suffering years of neglect as an orphan. Ted and leonine loved her dearly, but she always wondered if she had a better future. One full of adventure, test and triumph. So far she was starting in her second year of Colorado university. She loved her studies and always pushed herself to learn and make the most of her life. Except when the accident happened. Fate It all happened so fast. Today marked the anniversary of my pops death. I shuddered at the thought. The fire at the flats was a great tragedy. He died saving so many lives in his fire fighter days. I loved him so much for all he had given me through his beliefs and strengths. Mom worked around the clock as a bar maid, making ends meet for the bills. I felt sadness in her eyes every early morning she turned in our home, emptiness filled her heart after losing her mate. I had started to feel slight resentment for her as I had started to lack sleep worrying over her health. The door cracked open. Leonine-‘hey fae, how was your lecture? Sorry I’m running late. The boss decided we needed a deep clean… then you know the rest’. I shyed away from her gaze at me.My tired we’re so glum and dry with all the staring into my textbooks. All I needed was to rest, but my upcoming appointments and schedule didn’t quite fit in. ‘Hi mom. Just planning away as normal. You should rest mom, you’ve barely slept yourself’. She sighed in response. ‘Well fae I could say the same’ she shut the door behind her and I felt sudden relief to see her face. I barely had anytime with her anymore. I glanced at the clock,’oh god I’m going to be late!’ I grabbed my half eaten bagel and backpack. I can’t be late, my seminar starts in fifteen minutes! (in a ten minute bus ride). ‘FAE! A letter has arrived, don’t forget to open it, it could be your placement!’’ Ok mom! I ran downstairs as fast as my short arse could take me. At 5’1 my legs were always tired. I ripped open the black envelope addressed to myself and confidential?! ‘What the hell?’ I say to myself. ‘Miss Fate Robins, I am here to invite you to a private meeting to discuss your future. Yours faithfully, Your friend in waiting.’ What is this? What does it mean? P.s Meet me at the playground, opposite the library on the park bench. Don’t be late-8.30 pm. I checked my watch, 8.15am. What do I do, I have no idea who this is from and I have so much to do even with a job interview lined u, luckily my mums boss was generous after pops died and always offered more shifts our way. Do I really want meet a stranger, I have so much on my plate, maybe this is a prank. I’ll discuss with Patrick after our exam, I’m going to be late. Pulling into the bus station I began to feel anxious, relaying my notes as I can’t fail this. My life depending on this…. I needed my escape of reality. I worked too damn hard to loose it all now. Patrick-‘Fae! My girl, how are you?’. Patrick was my nearest friend since our first semester. He always knew what was going on in my head. He had a bright ginger Afro and pale white skin standing at 6ft. He wore geeky glasses that made his eyes bulge but his humour always cheered me up. He came running up and scruffed my long silver hair, making me blush. I quickly straightened my hair with my fingers. I had always crushed on him, since our first coffee meet up at Starbucks. He was never shy and always had a twinkle in his eyes. One green and one blue. How could anyone not love the speciality of him. Except I have stupid grey eyes, pointy bloody ears and tiny size 3 feet. At 20 years old I always felt sorry for myself but I promised myself a better future. I had a gorgeous birth mark on my wrist that always made me think who my real birth mother could of been. I quickly gripped my wrist and hugged it close with the thoughts lingering. ‘What up girl how are you today, what’s with the long face, missed me?’ ‘Nah, just your annoying ass, hey can I ask you a question?’ Sure he replied. ‘Well my mom is driving me crazy. So you want to go see a film tonight? Oh and check this out’. I reached into my back pocket for the scrunched up letter. ‘Ew do I have to touch that?’he chuckled grabbing for the envelope. ‘Yes! Dumbo. Anyways don’t start thinking weirdly about it just honestly tell me what you think, no judgment.’ I elbowed him cheekily into his ribs. He jokingly took a step back pretending to fall over his own feet. He landed right stupidly onto a girl walking the same direction. ‘Watch out stupid!’ She yelled causing my cheeks to burn even more. Meli was a mean girl who sat in behind every lecture snorting away to her little group of wannabes. ‘Meli watch your mouth!’ I shouted back ready blood boiling. She turned and slapped me hard against the arm. ‘Maybe fae you should just back off and stay out the heck of my way. I haven’t got time for short arses like you.’ She stormed of into her chair ready for the exam to finish. Patrick shared a glance of annoyance with me as we prepared for our last exam of the seminar. My hands began to shake, I nervously grabbed my head. What’s going on with me today, I can’t wait to get a decent night sleep but this felt different. My eyes began to sting and my ears prickled. What the heck?
