Prologue
The wall was cold against my back, grounding me in a moment I wished I could escape. My heart raced as Zak leaned in, his face so close I could feel the heat of his breath against my cheek. Around us, the crowded bar buzzed with laughter and music, but it all faded into a distant murmur. Right now, it was just him and me—and the secret that bound us.
I tried to keep my expression calm, keep my hands from shaking. But his eyes, sharp and knowing, caught every flicker of fear, every ounce of hesitation I fought to hide. I knew I couldn't win this, but I couldn't let him see how much power he held over me.
"Still pretending?" he asked, his voice low, sending a shiver down my spine. "You can act like that night was nothing, but we both know better, Skyllar."
My throat tightened as the memory hit me—the night I'd done something reckless, something so far from the perfect life I worked so hard to protect. One night of weakness, one mistake I'd vowed to forget. I forced myself to meet his gaze, hoping he couldn't see how hard I was trying to stay strong. "I told you," I said, my voice steadier than I felt. "It's only a one-night stand, Zak, pretend it never happened."
But he just smiled, his eyes never leaving mine. It was a dangerous smile, one that told me he wasn't planning to make this easy. "Forget it?" he murmured, leaning in until his lips were close to my ear. His voice was a dark whisper, laced with a threat that sent chills down my spine. "That's not really my style, Sky."
I held my breath, my heart pounding as his words sank in. He knew how much I had to lose, how much one careless rumor could shatter my carefully built reputation. I'd worked too hard and sacrificed too much to let someone like Zak—someone who didn't care about consequences—hold my future in his hands. I should have been furious. I should have been running. But I was trapped, pinned between the memory of what we'd shared and the icy dread of what he might do.
"Leave me alone, Zak," I managed, hoping the firmness in my voice would mask the fear.
But he only shrugged, unfazed, his smile shifting into something softer—almost vulnerable. "If you really want me to, maybe I should just show this to everyone?"
Panic gripped me as he showed me a photo of him and me in bed together, a tightening in my chest that made it hard to breathe. I could feel the weight of my choices pressing down on me, the impossible trap he'd laid. My scholarship, my reputation, everything I'd worked so hard for was suddenly at risk. And the only person who could destroy it all was standing right in front of me, his gaze as relentless as his words.
Then, for just a moment, his expression softened. "Look, I don't care about my reputation," he said, his voice gentle, almost... tender. "But you, Sky—you've got everything to lose. So make up your mind. Walk away, or... we figure this out. Together."
My head spun as he straightened, stepping back and giving me space to breathe. But the weight of his words lingered, like a dark promise I couldn't ignore. I'd spent my life perfecting every part of who I was—until him. And now, the one imperfection in my life was the very person I couldn't seem to shake.
