Prologue
“I don’t know mom.” Alani said. “Honey, it’s a great opportunity, and we’ll only be and hour away.” Alani was still very unsure. She’d never lived a way from her family. “Lani.” Her dad started. “We want the best for you. You gave up going through the college experience and took classes online to help us get through the business slump. But we’re in a good position now. There is no reason to keep yourself from a great opportunity. Your brother is back and is more than capable of continuing the business with us. It’s what he wants.” Alani was still skeptical. Yes, she wanted a better job, away from the family business, but she also wanted it to be near her family. Alani didn’t want to be away from her comfort zone. All of her life she’s known Catamount Falls. Her family was here, her history was here, her comfort was here. But she also knew her private heartbreak was here, as well as her complacency.  She’d been feeling stuck in a rut for quite some time, so when her best friend Blair told her she found a position in her administrative field and would love to forward her information she hopped on it without thought. Blair got out of Catamount Falls. She was working as a marketing manager in Seattle, just 3 hours away. While Alani was afraid to leave her hometown, she felt better thinking about moving to Seattle where her best friend, older sister, and her aunt and uncle lived. It would just be transplanting to the other half of her family. So, when she received her paperwork for hire, she jumped on it and started preparing herself for a move to Seattle. Only the job wasn’t in Seattle, it was an hour away in Palouse Falls. Not too far away, but she knew no one there. “We’ll help you find a place and get settled, honey. This is the type of position you have been looking for. Executive Assistant at James Industries. This is a big chance for you!” “I know dad. I-I guess I just always thought I’d have family nearby and-“  “We are nearby sweetie.” Her mom interjected. “We’re 45 mins, to an hour tops, away. You can make a weekend trip, or even and after work trip every week. Don’t let the fact that it’s a new place scare you.” Alani knew they were right. She nodded, and they breathed a collective sigh of relief. She smiled at that. She knew they felt bad that she never went away for the college experience like her siblings due to the inability to afford it. Alani’s parents’ business took a nosedive for many years with the turn of the economy. Alani didn’t get the 16th birthday car, or the 18th birthday cross country road trip with friends, or a paid for on-campus college education that her siblings did. Instead at 16 she was working hard at the lodge as the receptionist, fill-in cleaner, and even trail guide as the numbers dropped and they were forced to let go some families and close the cabins for economy. In the last years as the outdoors/naturist phenomena became more crazed, and people were looking to immerse themselves in nature and get back to their roots, the numbers were back up. Their lodge had even seen some celebrities, which helped pick up visitor numbers exponentially. They were doing great. And now her brother was back from college, graduating with high honors and ready to put that knowledge to use at the lodge. His ideas were already paying off and he was responsible for some of the celebrity traffic. “Sis, how about we go look at places tomorrow in Palouse. I saw some awesome cabins for rent. About 20 minutes from your job and maybe half an hour from us! You’ll be so close you won’t have time to miss us!” He brother Ethan offered. She smiled at him. Ethan was 6 years older than her and one of her best friends. “Okay. It sounds like a plan! Thank you all. I know you want this for me and even though I’m a little nervous, I want this too! Don’t feel bad about the things you think I missed.” She watched their expressions go a little guilty. “I gained more experience about the working world then I ever could have doing the traditional college thing. Don’t continue to beat yourself over what I missed and look at what I gained. Being the go-to-girl for the last seven years has prepared me for this job! Hey! It helped me land this job!” They all laughed at that and gave a group family hug.   The next day Alani and Ethan drove to Palouse to look at a few rental places that the small town had. She thought nothing would be for her until they got to the last stop. The cabin that her brother was talking about. It was 45 minutes from her current home and about 20 minutes to her new job. Alani saw it and immediately loved it. It was a renovated chalet located in the hills and tucked away in relative solitude. Already Alani was hooked. It had 2 bedrooms 2 baths and a wonderful view overlooking the small town. The upstairs master suite had a rustic balcony and a wide-open modern patio door and roof sky lights. It was airy yet still very cozy. The master bath had a double vanity with quartz counters, a walk-in shower big enough for 5 people and a glorious soaking tub that overlooked the woods. The second bedroom would act as her office and guest bedroom. The downstairs held her living and dining rooms and an updated kitchen. “How much is this Ethan?” “It belongs to a friend, Matthew DuPont. I told him that you would possibly be moving and he’s been wanting to either sell or fill the place since him and Lily got married and moved to Colorado. He’s willing to rent it for $850.” Alani knew that the rent on this place was way cheaper than she knew it should be. Seeing her expression her brother added “The mortgage is paid and this is just extra income for him. It’s not on the rental market yet and I asked him to hold off until I knew if you would take the job. Alani, I know that you hate to hear it, but we are all really sorry that you never got to experience all of the fun stuff that we experienced before adulthood sent us to college. Before you say anything, just let me finish. You were thrown into semi-adulthood at 16. You became privy to family troubles, picked up the reins handed to you and smashed it, all without complaint. You took the cards handed to you, finished school and college with high honors and now we want to make sure your first foray into the real world is smooth as can be.” Alani gave her brother a watery smile and he grabbed her face, kissed her forehead and gave her a hug. “Plus, this place is way better than my first crap hole apartment in grad school!” Alani chuckled. “Just so you know, the rents, myself, and Mariah have been steadily saving away and putting into an account for you for the last 7 years. You have enough to buy this house if you wanted.” Alani was shocked. Ethan chuckled and hugged her. “But mom and dad have already put away enough to rent this place for the year and they’ve already sent the money to Matt as of 20 minutes ago once I knew you loved this place. It’s yours for the year, just pay the utilities and you’re good to go.”  Alani was still for a moment than jumped into her brother’s arms, smother his cheeks with kisses, then proceeded to jump up and down and do a little happy jig. “Thank you all so much! This is perfect! I can’t wait to get furniture! Let’s head into town and see the furniture store and everything they have!” Ethan laughed at her enthusiasm. Palouse was a small town, but they had booming businesses that were modern and rustic all at the same time. By the end of the day Alani had all of her kitchen and office needs, a new bedroom suite, home accessories, and the intention of finagling a few items from the lodge storage. Her new home would be complete by the weekend. “That was exhausting.” Ethan griped. Alani chuckled and patted him on the back.” Let’s get a bite to eat” They went to a nearby bistro that seemed quite busy. It had specialty coffees, teas, beers, ciders, and even mead. With an equally diverse and hearty food menu they soon had a delicious fare in front of them. As they sat outside enjoying their meal Alani felt it. The hairs on her neck and arms stood up and her spine straightened as heat coursed within her. “You OK?” Ethan asked, brows furrowed. “Uh. Yeah, yes, I am.” She stuttered. She looked around, and behind Ethan she caught sight of him. A tall, gorgeous man with piercing green eyes, a built frame, flared nostrils and a shell-shocked expression. As their eyes met and held, she watched the fire blaze in them and felt the resulting heat course through her. She watched him breath in deep, and his eyes flutter shut and open again and lock on her. Who was he?
