Chapter 14 — The Kiss
After the dance, Clara tried escaping back inside the ballroom.
Unfortunately…
Jace followed her.
She stopped near the empty hallway outside the ballroom entrance.
“You shouldn’t keep doing this,” Clara whispered.
“Doing what?”
“Looking at me like that.”
Jace stepped closer slowly.
“How exactly am I looking at you?”
Clara swallowed hard. “Like you want to ruin my life.”
His eyes darkened instantly.
“Clara.”
The way he said her name made her entire body heat.
She should’ve walked away.
Instead…
she stayed.
Jace lifted one hand slowly toward her face.
His fingers brushed lightly against her jaw.
Then suddenly—
Clara grabbed his tie and kissed him first.
Jace reacted instantly.
One arm wrapped around her waist while his mouth crashed against hers hard and hungry.
The kiss became intense immediately.
Months of tension exploded recklessly between them.
Clara’s fingers tightened against his shirt while Jace kissed her deeply like he’d been restraining himself for too long.
Footsteps suddenly echoed nearby.
They pulled apart instantly.
Both breathing heavily.
Lily appeared around the corner—
then froze dramatically.
“Oh my God.”
Clara covered her face instantly.
Lily looked between them excitedly. “I KNEW IT.”
