The pack clinic was usually a place for healing. Warriors came to treat injuries, and newborn pups took their first breaths there.
Today, however, the atmosphere felt different.
“Sit,” Lucien ordered, pointing to the examination table.
Aloha hesitated. “Lucien, I’m fine. I don’t need a checkup before the trip. I still have packing to do.”
“You don’t look good,” he replied coldly. “And you still haven’t shifted. Dr. Aldren needs to confirm you’re ready for the Fusion Procedure.”
Aloha frowned.
“Fusion Procedure? You said my wolf would awaken naturally. You promised we’d wait.”
“We’ve waited long enough.”
Lucien stepped forward and firmly guided her onto the examination table.
“My father is done waiting. If your wolf refuses to awaken, he’ll make it happen.”
The door opened, and an elderly doctor entered carrying a silver case.
He wasn’t one of Blackthorns physicians. His white coat was spotless, and unlike everyone else in the room, he carried no wolf scent.
“Alpha Lucien,” he greeted with a nod.
“Dr. Aldren. She’s ready.”
The doctor turned to Aloha.
“Your arm, please.”
His expression remained calm and emotionless.
Aloha looked at Lucien.
“Please… I don’t want this.”
Lucien ignored her plea. Standing behind her, he gripped her arm and held it out.
“Stay still,” he whispered. “Don’t embarrass me.”
Dr. Aldren tied a tourniquet around her arm and inserted the needle.
“We’ll need several samples for genetic testing,” he explained.
Aloha winced as blood filled one vial after another.
The room began to spin.
“Please… that’s enough,” she whispered.
“Almost done.”
By the time the sixth vial was filled, she felt light-headed.
She turned toward Lucien, hoping for comfort.
Instead, he watched the blood with unsettling interest.
“The reaction is remarkable,” Dr. Aldren said as he removed the needle. Holding a vial to the light, he studied it carefully.
“Her plasma is denser than normal Beta blood… even stronger than most Alphas.”
Lucien smiled.
“She inherited her mother’s bloodline. The Silver Moon Gene.”
Dr. Aldren carefully placed the samples inside the case.
“I’ll begin testing immediately. If the results match what we’re looking for, the fusion procedure can begin after the wedding.”
Fusion procedure…The words echoed in Aloha’s mind.
She tried to stand but nearly collapsed.
Lucien caught her around the waist.
“She’s weak,” he muttered.
“A dormant wolf can’t handle this amount of blood loss,” Dr. Aldren replied. “She needs something to boost her glucose.”
“She’ll eat in the car.” Lucien pulled her toward the door.
Her legs barely supported her weight.
“Pull yourself together,” he said. “You’re going to be the Luna of Nightfang. You can faint over a needle.”
“I feel sick,” she whispered.
“No,” Lucien replied. “You’re finally becoming useful.”
As they reached the doorway, Aloha glanced back.
Dr. Aldren was still watching her.
For the first time, sympathy replaced the cold look in his eyes.
“Safe journey, Miss Aloha,” he said quietly.
Before she could answer, Lucien led her into the hallway.
“The convoy leaves soon,” he said, checking his watch. He looked at her pale face with annoyance.
“You look terrible. Fix yourself before we leave.”
Aloha leaned against the wall, holding the bandage on her arm.
The bruise on her waist still ached beneath her clothes.
She watched Lucien walk away without looking back.
As she stood there, Lyra’s warning echoed in her mind.
Lucien wasn’t her protector.
He was the danger she needed to escape.
