Chapter 3

The ballroom was filled with wolves from different packs. Aloha stood at the top of the staircase, gripping the railing as she looked at the guests below. “What a perfect day,” Vivienne said as she walked over. “At least we won’t have to see each other anymore.” “You never know what the future holds.” Aloha gave a small smile. Vivienne rolled her eyes. “Keep telling yourself that. If Lucien had chosen me, I’d be the one everyone was looking at.” Aloha didn’t answer. She wasn’t afraid of the crowd. She was afraid of Lucien. He stood in the middle of the ballroom, talking with several pack leaders. To everyone else, he looked like the perfect future Alpha. Only Aloha had started to see his true nature. “Ladies and gentlemen,” the announcer called. “Please welcome Alpha Lucien Nightfang and his fiancée, Aloha Blackthorn.” Everyone looked toward the stairs. Aloha walked down slowly. When she reached the bottom, Lucien smiled and took her hand. “You look beautiful,” he said. “Thank you.” He placed a hand around her waist and led her through the ballroom. His grip was firm enough to hurt. For the next hour, Aloha greeted guests while Lucien discussed pack business. Eventually, she leaned closer. “I need some fresh air.” “You’ll stay here,” Lucien replied. Before she could answer, another voice interrupted. “Mind if I borrow your fiancée for one dance?” A young Alpha stood beside them with a glass in his hand. “Alpha Kieran,” Lucien said. “I didn’t expect Ironfang to send anyone.” “My father sent me,” Kieran replied with a smile. He turned to Aloha. “May I have this dance?” Lucien clearly didn’t like the idea, but he couldn’t refuse in front of everyone. “One dance.” Aloha accepted Kieran’s hand. As they danced, he smiled at her. “You look like you need a break.” She laughed quietly. “Thank you. I did.” He glanced toward Lucien. “He seems difficult.” Aloha smiled. “That’s one way to describe him.” Kieran looked at her for a moment. “Why are you marrying him?” “He’s my mate.” “Is he?” The question caught her off guard. After a pause, she answered softly. “I don’t really have a choice.” “There’s always a choice,” Kieran said. “If you ever need help, Ironfang will welcome you.” Before she could reply, Lucien stepped between them. “The dance is over.” He pulled Aloha away. “Be careful,” Kieran warned. “You’re hurting her.” Lucien ignored him. He led Aloha onto a quiet balcony before turning to face her. “Did you enjoy yourself?” “It was only one dance.” “You seemed to enjoy his company.” Lucien’s voice was calm, but it made her uneasy. “Remember who you are.” “And who is that?” Aloha asked, confused about where the conversation was heading. “My future Luna.” He paused. “If your wolf finally awakens.” Aloha lowered her eyes. “It will.” “I hope so.” Lucien brushed her hair back. “My father is running out of patience.” The mention of Alpha Victor made her nervous. “What if I never shift?” she asked. Lucien smiled. “Then my father will make sure it happens.” Fear settled in Aloha’s chest. “Enjoy the rest of the party,” Lucien said before walking away. Aloha remained on the balcony, wondering what he really meant.
