“Your name?” Aiden asked while tilting his head to the side, he seemed curious like a puppy. If the woman didn’t know any better, she could almost see the man’s nonexistent tail wagging excitedly. “What does my name matter? Are you going to fire me because of the food I only served, I didn’t even make it!” Dea continued pretending as she stood there. She wasn’t planning on getting caught by this man. “Hm… this seems interesting you don’t have a name tag like the rest of the staff…” Aiden leaned forward and glanced at the woman’s chest searching for one but there was none. “I… forgot it at home.” Dea excused herself as she turned around. “Hm, if you don’t want to tell me then I will just ask your manager and-” At this threat Aiden was pulled back by the woman. “No, it’s Dea… my name is Dea…” She panicked so much she couldn’t even come up with a fake name on the spot. “Oh? Well, Dea, what makes you work here out of all places? I’ve never seen you before.” Aiden seemed to be rather suspicious of the woman as he stood in her way. “Hey you! Come over here and help with-! Director? What are you doing in the back with the staff!?” Suddenly the catering manager came over and panicked upon laying his eyes on the man, to say he looked horrified would be an understatement. “I was going to go home with this staff member. I’m bored of the party.” Aiden said while placing his arm over Dea’s shoulder and pulling her in. “I’m not going anywhere with you-” Dea said in a low murmur next to the man’s ear angrily. “Careful or they will find out you’re not actually a staff member here and the police will be called.” Aiden warned her playfully with a smile on his face. ‘No way… he knows I don’t work here but how? What about May? She’s still in there… I need to contact her.’ Dea grabbed her phone out her pocket but in the next moment Aiden took it off her hands. “Come with me...” Aiden said while dangling the phone in front of the woman’s face. Being left no choice Dea complied and went after him. The manager didn’t move a muscle to stop them. ‘Director… is he important?’ Dea wondered to herself as she glanced up at the man. He had a broad back and slick dark brown hair. A pair of dark brown eyes and large hands… His face was masculine and he had a beard making him look older although you could tell at a glance he was in his twenties. * * * “Thank you so much for taking me outside… it felt so stuffy there… I dislike big crowds…” May apologized and thanked the man heartily as she looked up at him. “Ah, I don’t like it either… I wanted to go outside but I couldn’t…” The man looked a bit more relaxed at that moment. The weather outside was getting a bit gloomy. “What’s your name?” May asked him curiously. “I’m Amanda.” She gave a fake name that couldn’t be traced back to her. “Oh, I’m… Thomas… Carte…” Thomas spoke in a quiet voice as if he was being interrogated. “Haha, how proper you told me both your names.” May chuckled a bit as she patted the man on the shoulder. “I like to keep a bit of mystery though so I won’t tell you my second mane.” She smiled at him kindly. “That’s alright… I just thought you might want to know… that I’m not… not really…” Thomas stumbled over his words, a few seconds ago he might have seemed relaxed but now he was a complete mess. “Hm? Oh don’t worry about such things.” May wasn’t sure what was bothering the man but she made a mental note to search up his name later. ‘For now… let’s see, he has a nice watch as well… From the bulge in his pants I can tell he’s carrying his wallet too… so…’ But before the woman could make her next more the man spoke up and interrupted her… Chapter 3: Confession *** “I’m glad there’s someone here that feels the same… that the party is boring.” Thomas’s quietness resounded in the woman’s ears. “Ah, yeah it’s not really my style… Why did you come though if you don’t like it?” May decided to ask him out of curiosity. Besides she needed a few more seconds to figure out her escape route after taking his watch. ‘After taking it I just have to hand it to Dea… but I don’t know her location… hm… this will be tricky…’ “My parents made me come here...” Thomas sighed as he leaned over the handrail. “These parties they make for me are so pointless… they want me to socialize with others but I just can’t bring myself to strike up a conversation… not when they look at me like that…” “I see…” May who wasn’t paying attention to him at all only nodded along as she glanced up at him. “You… have really nice eyes… you don’t look at me like the others…” Thomas sounded like a wounded puppy at that moment. There was something incredibly endearing about someone that looked tall and scary at first glance but was actually afraid of people deep down. “Haha, thank you. Though they’re plain old brown eyes really…” May remarked while leaning onto the hand rail as well. “So… why did you come here? You said you weren’t enjoying it either…” Thomas asked kindly. “I… would rather not say.” May wasn’t about to admit she was there to rob people, not like she could even in this situation. “Hm…” Thomas nodded along, it seemed like he wasn’t going to question her more than this. “Do you… like the Only If You Love Me Series?” His sudden question surprised the woman. But May remained calm as she replied. “I do! How did you know?” She asked with a tilt of her head. “Your ring… it’s from there right? It came with the exclusive copy…” Thomas explained as he pointed it out. May glanced down at her hand in a bit of a panic. ‘So he’s a nerd uhh…? I wasn’t expecting anyone to know where this ring is from…’ She thought to herself. This was one of the few things she spend her own money on, that ring that was given to the heroine in her favorite series… It was said that it can make your wishes come true, the edition came with it, it was a rather plan looking ring but it was made from 14k gold so it wasn’t completely worthless. “Yeah… I’m surprised, this is the first time someone’s known where it’s from!” May remarked as she smiled brightly. “Well… it’s my favorite series…” Thomas slowly pulled out from under his button down shirt a necklace with a ring on it. “Whoa, you have the same one!” May was excited and smiling. “Haha, so you put it over a chain because it didn’t fit on your fingers?” She chuckled a bit finding it sweet. “Yeah… it’s a one size thing…” Thomas seemed a bit nervous. “This is my first time as well, meeting someone that likes the series…” He remarked in a quiet manner. “I’m glad, it’s pretty old so I didn’t think anyone really cares about it.” May remarked while thinking back on her childhood. It was one of her favorite series because she hoped she could be like the main heroine, to get everything she ever wanted in life… to become someone important… When she grew up a bit and saw the special edition with the ring, she gave all her savings to buy it and ship it internationally. It was one of the things that kept her going in this life… “Looking at this ring… I sometimes hope it can really grant wishes the way it does for the heroine…” Thomas’s words were pretty similar to May’s own thoughts. “Yeah… me too…” May sighed a bit too heavily. ‘This guy is way too cute… he even likes a girly and old series like that… Ahh… how am I supposed to steal from him?! I better just go and find another target.’ “I’m going to go back inside now-” As may spoke the handrail broke and she slipped forward. Then Thomas quickly grabbed onto her and pulled her back. Resulting in them both falling on their assess, where Thomas made May’s fall cushioned as she landed on top of him. “S-sorry for touching you!” Thomas panicked a bit as he let go of her and May chuckled. ‘Seriously…’ May leaned in at the defenceless man that was completely flushed red. “Cute…” she remarked before kissing him on the cheek. A quick peck. She then stood up calmly. “Thank you for saving me…” May headed back inside. ‘Ha… I’m sorry Dea… I don’t think I can rob him at all… this night might just turn out to be a disaster…’ He thoughts were in disarray as she went back through the crowd doing her best to avoid Thomas who suddenly followed after her… * * * “What is it that you want with me!?” Dea yelled at the man taunting her… They had already climbed two floors up the stairs and were in front of Aiden’s personal hotel room. “Come inside and have a drink with me.” Aiden said with a smile, still dangling the phone from his hand. “I don’t have time for this! I’m busy-” Before Dea could say anything else the man crossed his arms. “Busy with doing fake work? You came in here without an invite and pretended to be staff… I wonder why that is…?” Aiden pretended to be clueless but even the most dumb of people could tell this man had figured things out already. “Stop messing with me!” Dea was becoming angrier by the moment. “Oh, you have a message… the mission is a failure, it says…” Aiden casually glanced at the woman’s screen and read the message out loud. “Failure…?” Dea was shocked for a moment then grabbed her phone and tried to leave but the man held her hand. “Tell me what did you two come here to do…?” Aiden had a stern look in his eyes that then turned gentle. “If I like your answer I might even let you off easy, how about that?” “It’s none of your business, now let go of me!” Dea’s anger was now more close to sadness. ‘This is all my fault… if I hadn’t come up here with him I might have supported May downstairs… I’m awful.’ She thought to herself. “Is it money you need? How much?” Aiden asked as he pulled her inside and closed the door. “I’ll give you 500$ if you tell me what you’re here for.” “Huh?” Dea stood there bewildered by the man’s boldness. “1000$ then?” Aiden sweetened the deal as he headed to the side of his pantry and pulled out 100$ bills and stacked ten of them in his hand, then gave them to the woman. “I…” Dea looked at the money. She had no idea if it would be enough but there was no doubt it was a good sum. “Eh… don’t be greedy, this is my final offer.” Aiden said as he leaned in closer to the woman. Dea crushed the bills in her hands and looked up at the man. “We just wanted to see what the party was all about…” She lied though her voice cracked a bit, she was a horrible liar. “I see…” On the other hand Aiden pretended to accept her reason and smiled. “I guess you can go then.” He opened the door for her. With some amount of suspicion Dea headed out, not breaking eye contact with the man. Then she ran for it, with the money hastily stuffed in her pockets she headed downstairs. Texting May to see where she is until she spotted her in the crowd. “Wait, I’m sorry if I offended you…” Thomas finally managed to catch up with May as well and apologized to her profusely. “No, no, it’s just I have to-” Before May could utter another word she was seen by two familiar men, the two they had stolen the cake, watch and ring from… They recognized her instantly. “What a coincidence, it’s the lady we helped when we lost the cake!” One of the men was overly enthusiastic while the other approached her with a skeptical outlook. “Ah, it’s you two again…” May sighed looking at them and then smiled. ‘I knew there was a chance they’d be here but I was confident I could hide in the crowd.’ She thought to herself as she faced them. “Wow your English has become much better since last week…” The more skeptical man spoke with a mean expression on his face. “Y-yes, I learned lot…” May began breaking her perfect pronunciation once more. “Huh?” Thomas looked confused at the two body guards and then the woman. “You know Amanda?” He asked quietly. “Ah, yes she asked us for direction that day at your birthday when we-” The cheerful man was stopped mid sentence by the other. Meanwhile May made eye contact with Dea, being left with no choice Dea hit the fire alarm in the back and a siren played through the halls. “We have to evacuate quickly…” May said as she headed out and got lost in the crowd quickly, she slid by them and escaped along with all the other guests. Easily slipping away from Thomas and the two men. Dea followed suit but got out from the back and they re-grouped back at their rented apartment… END of Life Is Not A Peice Of Cake!
