My Boss Is A Sunshine but I’m Not Volume 1 Takano Masamune Chapter 1: Entry *** My entire life I’ve been… misunderstood… “Hey, do you think he’s going to do well here? I heard he just got out of juvenile, I wonder why they send him over at all.” The office was full of voices, everyone was speaking over each other. This was what a mob family’s business looked like and… Matthew was the sole heir of the previous leader who was known for his merciless behavior and strength that kept the organization together all this time. His son now has taken over it’s activities and to be fair he resembled his father a lot… In fact Matthew was a bit taller and much more muscular than his father even was at his prime. So there was no need for him to gain the respect of his underlings who already had heaps of it. They were sure he had the same personality as that wicked man as well… Someone that isn’t scared of using any underhanded method to get what he wants… Someone that will pummel them mercilessly if they make the wrong move… Someone that kills with no remorse… However… in truth… ‘How do I become friends with them?’ Matthew’s thoughts were quite more simple than one might have imagined. He wasn’t this cruel man that his father once was, and he didn’t want to be. In fact he was someone so strongly against violence that he’d never hurt anyone in his life… and yet still because of his appearance that was strong and muscular, because of his naturally shy demeanor that somehow always came off as if he was irritated, and the fact he couldn’t communicate well made others think he was a stoic man that didn’t care about anyone at all… When in truth it was simply he cared too much but was too scared to make a move cause he feared making mistakes. It was just like that long before his father passed away and it’s the same long after because his father had made sure to spread rumors about his son any way he can. This caused many misunderstandings and continue to do so even now… “I can’t believe it… the boss is leaving his office…” One of the underlings spoke in a low whisper to his comrade. “Is he going to speak to the newcomer? He’s going to scare him to death!” The other remarked in sheer amazement, they both sat there and watched as Matthew walked towards the desk of their newest member. His name was Jeremy, he was a boy at the frail age of 19 who got out of juvenile prison recently and joined their gang because of his older brother’s connections… ‘Wh-why is he looming over me?! Did I do something wrong!?’ Jeremy wondered to himself as he turned around to see his boss Mathew standing there and not saying anything at all. “S-sir?” He stuttered, the man’s presence was so intimidating that Jeremy felt like his throat was closing up. ‘He’s just a kid… why would he join such a dangerous organization like this one?’ Matthew wondered to himself as he stood there. He was still contemplating how to start the conversation so much so he was ignoring the other younger man’s reaction to his presence. “I know… I’m really good at any kind of work, I won’t betray your expectations!” Suddenly Jeremy spoke in a stronger voice, he knew he had to make a good impression of his boss. ‘He’s so enthusiastic… but still a kid, I don’t want to see someone so young getting hurt…’ Matthew thought to himself, still thinking. When finally words slipped out of his lips. “…you’re no good for this job.” He then turned around and left. Everyone at the office was dead silent for what felt like minutes but it was only about thirty seconds until the doors to the man’s office had closed. “D-did I offend him somehow?!” Jeremy turned around seeing some advice from his fellow comrades but they seemed just as shocked as he was… Meanwhile in his office… ‘Ahhhggg! He’s going to misunderstand right?! I didn’t want that to slip out of my mouth… I just wanted that kid to be safe… I shouldn’t have said anything…’ Matthew was instantly regretting ever going outside his office. This always seemed to happen when he began to over think things. It was never a good look at all. But he couldn’t help it… it was as if he was cursed to be forever misunderstood… and along with him surprisingly there was someone else… “Hello everyone, why are you starting into space? Did something happen?” A woman entered the office, her voice was mellow and kind, somehow when one looked at her they wouldn’t be able to look away. Not because of anything particularly lewd that might be associated with her, quite the opposite, she was so beautiful that others felt like they couldn’t even sexualize her existence… She looked frail and so kind, so gentle, everything about her long light brown hair to her set of large eyes and her slim body made others want to protect her… although she was around the same age as the boss was… “Ah, Carmin! It’s good you’re here… this kid was told off by the boss, is it possible you could help? He can’t lose this job, his mother’s in the hospital and no one will hire him fresh out of juvy…” One of the underlings, Phil spoke up with a somewhat desperate sounding voice as he asked for help. “Eh? Why can’t the kid just do it?” Carmin asked, beneath her beautiful exterior was hidden a heart that couldn’t care less about those around her. That in itself was the reason a woman would be in the mob business in the first place. This wasn’t for the faint of heart and it wasn’t for people that got overly attached. She was someone that refused to involve herself with other’s matters and tended to let them deal with them themselves. “Because you’re a high executive! The boss will surely hear you out, and no one refuses a beautiful lady now do they!?” Phill continued begging him, meanwhile the kid still stood there shocked from being told off and witnessing the man’s intimidating presence. “Ha… what’s in it for me?” Carmin never really tried to hide her discontent or carelessness for others. But it was strange, no matter how outright rude and uncaring she’d act towards her sworn comrades, they’d always find a way to excuse her behavior and think of her as a saint. Something she didn’t want to be… “I’ll buy your lunch for an entire week!” Phill suggested and Carmin didn’t look impressed at all. “A month? I’ll give you half my paycheck?” He suggested. “Sure that’s good enough.” Carmin shrugged her shoulders and walked past the young man, putting her hand on his shoulder. “Listen if you’re that shocked about getting told off once then a kid like you should just go back to his parents and cry about it. This isn’t a playground, man up or leave.” Her cruel words made him snap back into reality. “You’re right… I have to be a man.” Somehow that encouraged the boy instead of doing the opposite. Carmin had actually wanted to make him leave but she ended up doing the opposite. Walking into the office she was met with a strange sight… ‘Why is he…. Arranging flowers?’ Carmin stood at the door that closed automatically behind her. “I shouldn’t have said anything….” Matthew muttered under his breath and continued touching up the flowers in a beautiful bouquet. “Sir? May I have a word with you about the kid outside you spoke to? Is his place here threatened?” Carmin asked while the other froze in place. Matthew slowly turned around to face the woman and then wondered how to reply. ‘Ah… here I knew I messed up.’ He stood there starring into space but his expression looked as if he was staring the woman down. ‘Is this guy trying to intimidate me? I’m not scared of a bafoon like that…’ Carmin thought to herself as she walked forward and stared at the man, it was like a competition. By the time Matthew had gotten back to his senses he saw the woman looking at him so sternly. “I zoned out…” Matthew muttered under his breath once more. ‘Hm? So… he’s just… a weakling?’ Carmin’s first impression of her boss wasn’t what she expected. All this time the people outside had been a nervous mess over every single word that Matthew ever said to them, meanwhile this person wasn’t even scary in he first place… When Carmin compared the man’s looks to the way he behaves, she couldn’t help but feel this disconnection was ridiculous to say the least… but it also made her slightly more interested in this man that looked like he’d killed a thousand men, who acts like he would be too scared to speak to a literal kid and stumble over his words… Chapter 2: Liar, Liar *** ‘So… what do I even do here? I know I’m supposed to save that kid’s job or whatever… is it really worth the month of meals that I’ll get out of it?’ Just as Carmin was beginning to doubt her decision to walk into the office at all, the other man did something really unexpected. “These… please give them to him.” Matthew said as he handed a small bouquet of different flowers, there were some lilies, some roses, a few daisies, and some lilacs, it was a really random assortment that didn’t seem to hold any special meaning behind it. “What for?” Carmin asked while the bouquet was trusted against her, she held it in her hands, some of the petals scattered and fell at her feet. “As a sort of apology… he’s not fired…” Matthew remarked as he turned around, his entire face was flushed red, he was embarrassed. ‘This guy… is seriously stupid…’ Carmin thought to herself as she crushed the few fallen petals with her boots. ‘What business does a guy like that have as the head of a mob family huh?! He’s not even worth a single one of the threatening rumors I’ve heard about him… he’s offering flowers to a kid as an apology? What are you doing even!?’ She was getting more and more angry just thinking about it. “I just… I do think that he shouldn’t be working here… he’s just a kid and kids shouldn’t be shown violence on a daily basis… I felt…” Matthew stood there with his head lowered and Carmin stared back at him with some level of resentment. “How do you get to say that? You have no idea that stupid brat might deserve to be here. He was sent to prison remember? Even if it was juvy. Where else could he go?” Carmin’s anger seemed to be seeping through, she didn’t care to look good in front of the man, she didn’t care he was her boss. “…you’re… right…” Matthew nodded his head in agreement as he looked down at the petals on the ground he began picking them up. “….however no matter what he did, he’s still a kid and he deserves to have a choice. To choose another path while he’s still young.” Suddenly those words hit Carmin like a ton of bricks. This person that looked like a giant stone cold man was actually so ridiculously soft towards others, caring… The exact opposite of her… And yet he had the respect of everyone in the business… “That kid can’t quit without enough money, his mother’s in the hospital. They sent me in here so I can make you change your mind. They said you wouldn’t say no to a pretty woman.” Carmin had no intentions of hiding what they told her, in fact she felt like it was easier to explain than to come up with some other lie. “I see… I’m sorry for getting you involved in this. Give those to him and tell him he can go home. I’ll take care of the hospital bill for his mother.” Matthew nodded his head as he sat back at his desk. For a split second there Carmin saw this man not as a boss but just as a boy that wanted to do good in the world. Even though they were the same age they were brought up so differently from each other… “Fine.” Carmin walked out with the flowers and approached the boy. Placing them on his desk she spoke in a harsh tone. “Pack up your stuff and leave. You’re not working here anymore.” Her harsh words reached the boy’s ears and he stood there almost frozen in place before questioning her. “But his mother-” Phil tried to chime in and Carmin slammed her hand onto the desk beneath it. “It’s fine… it’s going to be paid off… so just make sure this kid doesn’t cause anymore trouble ever again.” Carmin looked down at the boy who seemed to be coming back to his senses suddenly. “You should find a normal job and earn money a proper way. Don’t worry about your mother’s bills and just live like any other almost adult does…” She then walked towards the exit. “That’s your parting gift from me, so don’t waste it…” She said and the moment she left the office everyone smiled and laughed. “Seriously?! She’s far too kind! To give you flowers and to pay off your mom’s bill? What a girl!” Phil spoke in an overly enthusiastic manner and the boy was crying. “Hey now… you have to thank her properly… I bet it was difficult for her to speak with that mean spirited boss of ours… so make sure you leave with a smile on your face.” “She’s… really amazing…” The boy that hadn’t cried in a long time was suddenly overwhelmed with emotions. He saw his mother in that woman just now. The kindness even in her blunt remarks shone through so brightly that he was unable to look away… * * * “What a load of crap…” All the while Carmin cursed under her breath while smoking outside. She couldn’t believe she was sucked into such a situation. “I couldn’t care less about that brat… there’s a hundred more just like him that come in every month… maybe every other week even… so what does that prick think he can do? Can he save all the children from coming into this world just like that? What a joke…” Carmin’s anger was apparent in every fiber of her being, she was annoyed, she was frustrated, she was on edge just remembering that man’s face again. “…if it were possible… then he should have saved me first…” Carmin’s tone softened slightly at those words that surprised even herself. She had joined the organization a long, long time ago when she was still too young to understand the world around her… If she hadn’t matured quickly and became the way she is now then there was no telling where she might have ended up… And she did it all on her own without help from anyone around her… that’s why she felt it almost as an insult to have someone saved right in front of her… She couldn’t have been saved, there wasn’t a hero back there that would magically change her life and pay for all her financial worries…
