So why was such a person here now?
“Ahhh… what a pain… I hate that guy… and his goody two shoes attitude… and the way he made me do the dirty work and…” Carmin paused as she heard footsteps, she turned around and braced herself, reaching out to her trouser’s pocket where she had a sturdy all silver pocket watch hidden there.
“I wanted to say… thank you.” It was that same boy from the office. Suddenly he looked to be in good spirits as he approached her.
“Why thank me?” Carmin was confused.
“Because you did so much and even for paying the bill I heard from the hospital… thank you, for… doing this…” The boy lowered his head again.
“I did no such thing-” Carmin couldn’t even finish her sentence as the boy hugged her.
“I promise I’ll never get into trouble again!” The boy’s enthusiasm was deafening to her ears. Carmin couldn’t even imagine a world where she were in the same position as that boy and acting like that… it was childish… ridiculous to her…
After the boy left she understood something… The entire office thought she was the one that paid the bill, the one that gave the flowers, the one that made sure the boy didn’t have to be involved in this world…
“Stupid… they don’t even know who they should be thanking…” Carmin had gotten this treatment a lot when those around her thought she was a kind soul just because she looked innocent, and because she was a woman…
Meanwhile Matthew seemed to have the exact opposite issue, where others thought he was extremely intimidating and scary, just because of the way he looked….
“Maybe… we’re not so different after all…” Carmin considered. Of course she couldn’t understand why the boss was just a softie, but she felt like he knew what it felt like to be constantly misunderstood and have words put in your mouth…
“Haa… whatever… it’s not like it matters…” Carmin remarked while throwing her cigarette to the ground and crushing it beneath her boots. “I don’t work with the boss anyways, this was a one off thing…” She spoke too soon because the very next day she was appointed as Matthew’s personal assistant…

“Why am I here?” Carmin asked with her arms crossed staring at the man that looked like he might faint out of panick mixed in with nervousness.
“This, I want you to give it to Rebbecca, she’s quitting today…” Matthew gave the woman another random arrangement of flowers.
“What for? You could just hand them over yourself.” Carmin expressed her great displeasure rather openly.
“Well… last time I gave an underling flowers… they thought I was threatening him with death… and I couldn’t tell them I wasn’t… I got nervous and left… and that person… he cut off his pinky to prove his loyalty… he had to go to the hospital to get it reattached and-” He was interrupted.
“I get it, whatever… I’ll hand them over and tell them they’re from you-” Carmin was stopped by the boss’s hand that held onto her jacket, sort of like a child that hands to their parent for comfort.
“Don’t tell them it’s from me… tell them it’s from you… so that they’ll know the intention is good…” Matthew asked as he looked like a puppy with his tail tugged between his legs.
“…what a pain… tsk…” Carmin clicked her tongue as she walked out of the office and into the next one, doing small tasks like that only further made the misunderstanding in the office possible…
Each time Matthew wanted to do something goof for someone, he let Carmin do it and she became more loved than ever… meanwhile he became more feared than ever as he’d started leaving his office even more rarely than ever before…
It was as if it was a never ending cycle of misunderstanding…
Chapter 3: Opposite Misunderstanding
***
“What’s your deal anyways?” Carmin finally stopped her boss and pressed him against a wall in the corridor. Thankfully she chose a time where all the other underlings would be out on their lunch break.
“W-what did I do?” Matthew asked in a bit of a stutter while turning towards the woman that was almost half his size, if one had to put this image into words, it would be like seeing a large lion being terrified by a small mouse.
Carmin continued. “You boss me around all the time and make me do these pointless things. Do you even understand what my job here is? How dare you make me go out of my way to win favors with people.” She adamantly complained.
“I’m sorry…” Matthew quickly apologized, he lowered his shoulders as if he was at a loss for words.
‘He looks so pitiful I can’t even bring myself to continue…’ Carmin sighed heavily while glancing at her side. “I have a job today, so don’t interrupt, alright?” She warned him. “Don’t ask me to do anything unnecessary either, since it seems like I’m the only one that cares about getting anything done. I should have been the next leader, not you.” She scoffed at him and turned around, her heavy boots with reinforced on the insides with metal sounded incredibly loud in the quiet office.
Matthew stood there for a while without moving, it was as if those words by her made him wonder…

“UGHAAAAA!” Pained sounds were coming from the depths of an underground facility. It was run down but the structure was solid, everything was covered in dirt, blood and other types of liquids…
“Hm… it seems like you really went off the rails there…” Carmin spoke in a low voice, although even that didn’t make her threatening. Her fist was covered in blood and so were her shoes. She stared with such stone cold eyes as the man at her feet who begged for his life.
“I really… I didn’t mean to let the information leak… she tricked me!” He pleaded, this man had betrayed their organization by relying information to their opposition.
“Hm… I wonder if that will hold up in front of the others? Do you think they’ll show pity on you if you beg hard enough?” Carmin asked while tilting her head to the side. She was anything but innocent, she was a demon incarnate. Someone that would crush those that oppose her, those that threaten her standing even a little bit would be delt with by her personally…
“I promise, I’ll make it right… I’ll never sleep with anyone again, I will never-” The man paused as he watched Carmin grab something off the tray on the table.
“See… I’m so glad you said that, because I will personally make sure you can never stick your d**k into anything ever again.” Carmin’s smile grew wide, as if she took personal joy in torturing others, she moved towards the man crawling on the ground with purpose… slow steps, each click of her heels to the man felt as if he was going to die…
“I will be good… I promise, never, I’ll never betray your trust again, I-!” The man was interrupted with a quick slap to the face.
“It’s alright, you don’t need to tell me. I already know you won’t be able to do be wrong again… since dead men don’t speak.” Carmin’s innocent eyes portrayed such a horrifying sight to the man that clung to her shoes.
“No, no, NOOOO!” The man’s desperate cries were heard throughout the basement.
“Stop squirming around, you’re going to make this harder for yourself!” Carmin yelled s she delivered a quick kick to the man’s abdomen.
The man laying on the ground shifted and ground in pain after losing his breath he felt like this was the end… then there were footsteps.
Carmin instantly got into position and drew the gun she prepared for the man towards the door. ‘Why would anybody come here at this time?’ She wondered to herself but then quickly lowered her gun after seeing the familiar man’s face.
“It’s you again?” Carmin seemed disappointed but quickly disarmed knowing Matthew wasn’t a danger to her. “What do you want now? Want me to go save some kittens off a tree or something?” She openly mocked him and even the man laying on the ground felt worried.
How could she speak to the fearsome boss like that? The man on the ground wondered to himself but remained silent as he couldn’t speak at all due to the bewilderment he was experiencing.
“You shouldn’t hurt him like that…” Matthew’s voice sounded strong and domineering, he had a serious expression on his face.
“Are you serious?” Carmin stood there in shock. Then she laughed. “Haha… you really are just as useless as I imagined… going out of your way to come down here to help a traitor? Are you insane?!” She yelled at him and glared at the man on the ground who instinctively pulled back in fear.
“It’s an unfair world I know that… but you shouldn’t kill him. He’s worked for us for a long time and it was a mistake but not something that we cannot fix.” Matthew spoke slowly as he approached the man on the ground, but all it did was force him to pull back even more, because despite the kind natured words that escaped Matthew’s lips, his appearance was large, his presence made it difficult for anyone to trust he had good intentions.
“So what? We just let every traitor off like that? Ha… then our organization might as well be a joke! They’ll kill us off if you continue to allow this.” Carmin spoke brazenly as ever, in fact she never hid this side of herself that everyone ignored.
“Killing isn’t good…” Matthew’s innocent words made Carmin want to vomit. How was it possible for anyone to be so naïve? So idealistic? So god damn stupid…
“You’re the boss and yet I have no respect for you.” Carmin walked past him and headed outside up the stairs.
Matthew stood there in the room for a while longer and tried to approach the man on the ground who pulled back again. Matthew couldn’t speak anymore, he headed up stairs to run after Carmin. “Wait!” He called out to her.
“What is it? You let that bastard go, so what more do you want from me?” Carmin asked, it had been her job to take care of traitors for the past 10 years, she’d learned how to hold a firearm far before she could learn how to read. This was all she had, this was what she did to protect the organization, to protect her standing…
“This is what makes my worth known… if I can’t even do my duties what else is there left?” Carmin asked as she turned towards the man that stood in front of her without any fear in his eyes.
“You can do good…” Matthew spoke in a low voice, it reverberated through the open space and reached the woman’s ears slowly.
“Ha! Seriously… this is the worst…” Carmin grabbed her cigarettes out of her pocket and lit one up. After taking a long drag she glanced over at her boss. “Do you know this organization will stop existing is you continue to lead the way you’ve been doing until now?” She asked him with a sincere expression on her face.
“Yes… that’s why I wanted to ask for your help.” Matthew’s words made the woman look up at him and pay attention. “You said you could lead better… so I want you to do that… through me.”
“You want me to make the decisions in your place? And you take all the credit and blame for it?” Carmin clarified as this was one of the most insane things she’d ever heard suggested in her life.
“Yes… that’s right.” Matthew nodded his head along with her.
“Why me?” Carmin asked while crossing her arms, her cigarette’s ash fell to the ground as she puffed out a large cloud of smoke directly into the man’s face.
“You’re the only person I can talk in front off… without… fear.” Matthew admitted, it was true whenever he was around anyone else he froze up and did things that would be misunderstood. But in front of this brazen, fearless woman that always spoke her mind clearly… he was able to speak without a bit of hesitation…
There was a part of him that was comforted by her behavior…
She was the only one that didn’t fear him, the only one that treated him as an equal, that told him off when others would be too afraid to even look into his eyes for a moment…
Carmin and him stared at each other for a while longer… knowing the man wasn’t in the habit of lying she believed him…
The decision seemed to simple to her at that moment… Carmin smiled as she opened her lips and threw her cigarette to the ground. “If I say yes… what’s in it for me?”
