Chapter One
The smell of burning wood woke me up as I looked around to find the flame and smoke was all around me. I screamed only to find that if I opened my mouth I couldn’t make a sound, the smoke was so thick that I was suffocating. I cried only to find that my tears mingled with the smoke and permanently changed them black as ink. I was trapped in a burning room and I was helpless to do anything.
I can only remember that… the pain. I was supposed to die but I didn’t… I don’t know what happened. My first memory besides that was looking into a mirror in the hospital and staring at a little girl with long brown hair with blonde highlights, wide eyes, and tiny rosebud lips. My first thought was I looked like a doll with mismatched one icey blue and the other dark brown, and tan skin. And so when they asked me, my name and I told them that I couldn’t remember they decided that since I was found in the ash and flames, that Ash was a good name. Apparently the fire was caused by a candle that lumenated the house, so Ash it is then.
The accident happened when I was eight, ten years ago they didn’t know when my birthday was so they made it the summer solstice June twenty- first.
I have been living with the woman who claimed that she was my aunt. I attend Rose Academy, a place for young girls to learn all things proper.
My cousin Anna is also attending Rose Academy. She makes fun of me all the time and then when she found out her friends were attending, it got a lot worse. I was about to leave when it was announced that I was to be Miss Rose of the year… again. Miss Rose is a major privilege because it means that no one can be near you, touch you, hurt you, and talk to you. I am basically a porcelain doll so treasured that you get put up on a shelf never to be played with.
Although there is one thing I didn’t tell you I can do… magic like other kinds of magic. Most fairies only have one kind of magic like the Unseelie fairies have magic that is destructive, Seelie fairies have magic that helps others. I am in the middle. I can do both.
The headmistress teaches me all the things I need to know about magic. One of the coolest things I do that I can’t control is that I can see others auras. Auras are the true color of a person’s soul. I thought that it was due to the fact that I was in an accident and the fire did something to my eyes
I went into the garden to clear my head and I didn’t notice the fairy circle near me. Fairy circles are ways for humans to come into Tir Na Nog.
I think of the fire and how the doctors said that when I was found there wasn’t a single scratch on me no burns, no blisters, no nothing… I thought it was weird.
Then things got weirder when the fairy circle lit up like the circle had fifty spotlights on it and as the light faded there was a human. He... at least I think it’s a he, had his back to me and looked around and turned to face me. His skin was like ivory and his eyes which were a pale violet. His hair was messy and black. He looked at me like I was a figment of his imagination. He reached out to touch my cheek. I stood there confused, why would he look at me and then try to touch me?
“I knew I would find you.” he whispered.
I didn’t know him at all, I was wondering who he was.
“Do I know you?”
“Oh, I thought that you would know me,” The boy declared
“Well since you don’t know me, I’m Zephyr.”
“I’m Ashlyn, but I prefer Ash.”
He… I mean Zephyr smiled and I gave him a small smile, the smile that I hated because it made me look even more like a doll.
