Chapter 1: The weak Omega
Teresa’s POV
I knelt to clean the floor till my knees ached from the hard stone. My hands were dirty, with small cuts from the old brush all over them. The smell of dirt and soap I perceived, but I didn’t dare complain. It wasn't expected of omegas like me to share their complaints. It was expected of us to work, keep our heads down, and stay unknown.
From the other side of the hall, one of the brave ladies laughed, "Look at her." "As if she were destined to serve, she is still on her knees."
Her pals laughed. I kept my head down despite the sting in my chest. It would only grow worse if I looked up.
"Did you hear?" said a second voice. She is the coward's daughter. The one who ran rather than participate in battle with the pack. I wouldn't be shocked if she didn't find a partner. She would never be wanted by any Alpha.
Unlike claws, their words cut deeply. I gulped, scrubbed more quickly, and claimed not to hear them. Like me, my wolf was little and shy, and it whined at the back of my mind.
One of the attackers approached, knowingly spilling the bucket of water she was holding close to me. My skirt was splashed with cold water. " Sorry. Have I undone all of your hard work? Omega, clean it once again.
They laughed more. I didn't fight back, even though my face was burning. I never reacted.
When they finally left, I sat there shaking and hugging myself. I said to myself, "One day... one day I'll matter." However, the claims sounded false.
The sun was already setting when I got done. In the hopes that my father would be understanding tonight, I slipped back to the small house we shared. I knew better, though, as soon as I entered.
His eyes were red as he sat at the table, drunk. As soon as he looked at me, his lip twisted. "What have you been up to?"
I bowed my head and said, "Working, Father."
"Are you working?" His cup slammed to the floor. “Even if you're constantly busy, you still embarrass me. What does the pack call me? Do you know? Coward! Due to you. Because you were born weak and your mother…” His voice trembled as he paused. "She would still be alive if you hadn't been born," he spat.
My eyes hurt with tears. I wanted to shout that I needed his love, that it wasn't my fault, and that I missed her too. But I could only say "I'm sorry" in a silent voice.
He yelled, "Sorry doesn't fix anything. The Alpha's ceremony is tomorrow. You dare not make me look stupid. Keep out of sight. My useless kid shouldn't be seen by anyone.”
I gave a quick nod, stepping back before he could touch me. I hid my face in the pillow as soon as I entered my small room, stifling the sobs that shook in my chest. My sadness was repeated by my wolf's whimper once more.
I sneaked out into the night when the home was quieter. The whisper of leaves and cold air met me as I entered the woods. When the moon was at its brightest, I headed to the clearing. I dropped to my knees and looked up into the sparkling light.
"Moon Goddess," I said in a shaky voice. "Help me out, please. I don't desire wealth or beauty. All I want is love. I'm looking for someone who will notice me and not reject me. Give me a reason to live, please.”
The wind changed, gentle against my face, and I experienced a new feeling for the first time in my life. Like a chain connecting me to something unseen, there was a tug deep within my chest. My wolf's ears perked up as she stirred restlessly.
"What is that?" I gripped my chest and said quietly. The feeling increased, simultaneously freezing like ice and burning like fire. My heart raced, but I was also afraid.
The pack gathered for the Alpha's ceremony the following day. Everybody was dressed to fashionably, the men tall and proud, the women looking beautiful. I stayed out of sight, as Father had directed.
Everybody were excited. The Alpha, Jordan, was in the middle. Tall, strong, and commanded quiet without a word, he was everything I wasn't. My heart leaped as his keen eyes searched the throng.
I couldn't resist seeing, even though I told myself not to. Then it took place.
His eyes met mine.
I gasped. The tie between us burst, burning my chest. Like lightning hitting the ground, the pull I felt last night suddenly became real. Inside of me, my wolf cried out, Mate! Mate!
The crowd echoed with gasps. I was the weak omega that nobody cared about, so people turned to stare at me.
"No," I said in a whisper, my hands shaking. "This isn't possible."
Jordan's face got serious. A sneer drew back his lips. His aura's force smothered me as it crashed over me.
He grumbled, his voice slicing the quiet like a sword, "The Moon Goddess must be kidding."
The crowd let out a louder gasp. There were whispers. Faces twisted in surprise, pity, and laughter. My heart stopped.
And I felt my entire life start to fall apart at that very moment as a result of his rejection.
