CHAPTER 1: OFFER IN THE DARK The rain lashed against the pavement, turning the city streets into cold, glistening sheets of grey. Arya pulled her thin cardigan tighter around her shoulders, her bare shoes splashing through puddles as she hurried along the empty sidewalk. It had been two weeks since she lost the small room she shared with her parents, two weeks of sleeping on hard porches and begging for scraps at the back of bakeries. Her stomach ached, her throat felt dry, and every step felt heavier than the last. She turned down a quieter side street hoping to get out of the wind, but stopped short when three men stepped out from the shadow of a parked van. Arya froze, her heart hammering hard against her ribs. She backed away slowly until her shoulder bumped against cold brick. Headlights flared bright behind her, cutting through the rain and blinding the men. A sleek black sedan pulled up smoothly, its engine going silent. The back door opened, and Lucas stepped out. He was tall, broad‑shouldered, wearing a perfectly tailored charcoal suit that looked untouched by the rain. His dark hair was neat, his jaw set sharp, and his eyes held a quiet, heavy authority that made the men flinch back instantly. “Step away from her,” Lucas said. His voice was low, calm, but carried a weight no one dared argue with. The men exchanged a nervous look, then hurried off into the dark without a word. Lucas turned his gaze to Arya. He saw her torn clothes, her chapped lips, the way she was trembling from cold and fear. He walked toward her slowly, stopping a few feet away so he would not crowd her. “I don’t mean you any harm,” he said evenly. “But you cannot stay out here tonight. It is not safe.” Arya stared up at him, wary and confused. “Who are you?” “Lucas.” He kept his hands by his sides so she would not feel threatened. “I have a large house on the north edge of the city. Warm food, dry clothes, a bed to sleep in. You can come with me, or you can stay here and take your chances. The choice is yours.” Arya looked at the dark, empty street, then back at him. She had nowhere else to go. She nodded slowly, her voice barely a whisper. “Okay.” Lucas opened the car door for her. Arya climbed inside, and as the car pulled away from the curb, she had no idea that stepping into that back seat would change the rest of her life.
