Chapter One: The Substitution
The grandeur of the wedding venue overwhelmed Claire Evans, its opulence seeming almost surreal as she stood clutching her bouquet, trying desperately to calm her racing heart. Today was meant to be her sister Mia's day, but Mia had refused to marry Ethan Hunter upon learning of his paralysis from a car accident. Claire had stepped in, sacrificing her own happiness to salvage her family's dwindling fortunes. “Remember your role today, Claire,” her step mother's urgent whisper broke through the nervous haze beside her. “I know, Mom,” Claire managed a strained smile, her hands trembling. As the ceremony commenced, Ethan was conspicuously absent. Claire stood alone in the center of the lavish hall, the weight of curious and mocking gazes bearing down on her. Whispered conversations and stifled laughter filled the air, each sound stoking the flames of embarrassment and shame on her flushed cheeks. “I heard her husband-to-be is paralyzed and couldn’t even be bothered to show up. How pathetic,” murmured one woman. “Yeah, how will she cope this?” added another. Claire’s heart sank, but she held her ground, completing the ceremony without Ethan by her side. She moved into his mansion afterward, but he remained abroad for treatment, making their marriage feel like a transaction devoid of any warmth or connection. She was merely a stand-in, a pawn in a game of family politics. Two lonely years passed in the vast emptiness of the mansion. Claire spent each day yearning for a glimpse of Ethan, imagining his face, but never seeing it. Today, Ethan was finally due to return home. Claire clung to a glimmer of hope that maybe their paths would cross and their marriage would finally begin. However, fate had other plans. On her way to the airport to meet him, a group of strangers appeared out of nowhere and abducted her. When Claire awoke, she found herself in a dimly lit room. The air was heavy with the acrid scent of fear and uncertainty. Shadows danced ominously around her, creating a maze of darkness that only heightened her sense of vulnerability. Her heart raced as she tried to gather her bearings, her breath coming in quick, shallow gasps. A towering figure loomed over her, his presence both menacing and strangely familiar. His form was silhouetted against the faint light, casting a formidable shadow. Claire’s pulse quickened as she struggled to make out his features, her senses overwhelmed by fear and disorientation. “Stay still,” a deep, commanding voice instructed, sending a shiver down Claire’s spine. She tried to focus on his face, but the dim light and her mounting anxiety made every detail elusive. “Who are you?” Claire managed to gasp, her voice trembling with a mix of fear and defiance. The figure remained silent, his grip tightening on her wrists with a strength that belied his appearance. Claire’s attempts to break free were met with overpowering resistance, her body growing weak with each futile struggle. “I said, who are you?” Claire repeated, her voice rising in desperation as adrenaline surged through her veins. The figure leaned closer, his breath warm against her cheek. “You don’t need to know,” he replied cryptically, his tone cold and unyielding. Claire’s heart sank, a wave of helplessness washing over her. Her struggles weakened, replaced by a numb resignation as tears welled in her eyes. The intensity of the situation left her feeling both emotionally and physically drained. “Why are you doing this?” Claire whispered, her voice cracking with raw emotion. The figure hesitated, a fleeting glimpse of uncertainty crossing his features before he masked it with stoic resolve. “We have both been set up and drugged so it’s not personal. I'm sorry.” he muttered, his voice betraying a hint of regret. The words offered little comfort, leaving Claire to wrestle with a deepening sense of dread. She felt a wave of resignation, her body growing limp against the cold, unforgiving surface beneath her. In the haze of fear and confusion, Claire's thoughts drifted to Ethan. Was this a punishment for a marriage born out of obligation? Or was it a sinister plot beyond her comprehension? As the minutes stretched into what felt like an eternity, Claire clung to a fragile hope that the nightmare would end. But in the darkness of the room, hope seemed like a distant illusion, and Claire was left facing her tormentor alone. When she regained consciousness, the man was gone. Exhausted and shaken, Claire returned home, only to receive another devastating blow. “Mrs. Hunter, Mr. Hunter wishes to divorce you,” the butler informed her coldly. “Why?” Claire’s voice trembled with disbelief. “Mr. Hunter never desired this marriage. It was forced upon him by the family. Moreover, he heard rumors that you spoke ill of his condition,” the butler replied, his tone indifferent. Claire’s heart shattered. To Ethan, she was nothing more than an inconvenience. She thought back to the stranger who had taken advantage of her that night, overwhelmed with shame and helplessness. Unbeknownst to her, the man who had crossed that line with her was Ethan himself. Despite being able to walk, he chose to remain in a wheelchair to protect himself from the family's ambitions and to keep his true capabilities hidden. Yet, even in his vulnerable state, he fell victim to his family's schemes, drugged and disoriented, unknowingly sharing an intimate moment with Claire. Claire’s thoughts raced as she stood alone in the grand mansion. Her family had used her, casting her aside once their needs were fulfilled. Her father and stepmother doted on Mia, blinded to Claire’s sacrifices. Mia, spoiled and entitled, had always taken advantage of their parents’ favoritism, never considering the consequences of her actions. In the solitude of the mansion, Claire felt a profound sense of betrayal and abandonment. She had given up everything for a marriage that was never hers to begin with, only to be discarded like a used pawn on a chessboard. As she gazed out of the window, the city lights blurred into a sea of uncertainty. Claire Evans, once hopeful and determined, now faced an uncertain future filled with shattered dreams and broken promises.
