*CHAPTER 1:
My name is Nandi Dlamini. I am 24 years old. I live in Umlazi, Durban, with my mother and my little sister, Zama. Life was not easy, but I had one thing that made me happy. His name was Sipho.
Sipho and I dated for 3 years. 3 years! I loved him with all my heart. He was a construction worker, he didn't have much money, but I didn't care. I believed that one day we would get married. I believed he loved me, too.
That Tuesday was supposed to be a normal day. I closed early from my job at the salon in town. I wanted to surprise Sipho. I bought his favorite - kota and a cold Coke. I walked all the way to his room in the hostel, smiling. I was thinking, maybe tonight he will finally say we can lobola.
I knocked. No answer. I knocked again. I heard voices inside.
"Who is there?" It was Lindiwe's voice. Lindiwe... my blood sister. My little sister Zama's friend? No, my cousin sister Lindiwe, who lives with us!
My heart started beating so fast. My hands were shaking.
I pushed the door. It was not locked.
And there... on Sipho's small bed... Sipho and Lindiwe. They were not wearing proper clothes. They were kissing. Lindiwe saw me and screamed.
Sipho jumped up. "Nandi! It's not what you think!"
Not what I think? I was holding kota for him! I was dreaming about our wedding! And he was there with my sister!
Tears just came. I could not even shout. I just dropped the kota and ran.
"Nandi! Wait!" Sipho shouted behind me.
I ran and ran until I reached the main road. People were looking at me. A girl crying with kota on the ground. I felt so stupid. So used. How long? How long has this been happening behind my back? In my own house?
I went home. My mother was cooking.
"Where is Lindiwe?" my mother asked.
I couldn't answer. I just went to my room and cried the whole night. That night, I promised myself: I will never be a fool for a man again. I will work hard. I will find a better life.
The next morning, I woke up with swollen eyes. I had to go to work. At the salon, my boss said, "Nandi, there is a new job for you. My friend owns a big hotel on the beachfront. They need a receptionist. R8000 per month. You are beautiful and you speak good English. Do you want it?"
R8000? I was earning R1500 at the salon.
I said yes.
I didn't know that the hotel would change my life. I didn't know that I would meet HIM there. Mr Liam Khumalo. The owner. 32 years old. Rich. Handsome. And he would look at me like no man ever did.
