Amelia POV. Before the meeting, for who the next Luna will be, Amelia it felt as though she has never seen the moon before. And as she lay in her bed, the whispering of the branches against the window was never to be erased from her memory the world outside her own was one she never wanted to be part of. The was the night for the gathering and as much as Selena tried to reassure her and get her to put on a beautiful dress the feeling in her stomach did not disappear. Selena knocked and opened the door slowly, as she enters, Amelia room. “Amelia, it’s time.” There was this uneasiness that could be felt when Selena spoke softly to Amelia and it reminded Amelia of her mother. The gathering was a great occasion for the pack but for Amelia, it was a night of humiliation. “I don’t want to go,” Amelia murmured Lying on her bed, she spun the material of her dress in her hands and fidgeted on the edge of the mattress. “They’ll all be there… Lucy Blackwood, the Uncle Marcus, who hates me, ever since mom died and all those people who honestly believe that I am nothing more than a curse.” Amelia muttered. Selena smiles. Selena kneeling beside her, touching her knee gently, Amelia sighed and started speaking. “You are not a curse, Amelia. You are my niece, but you are here in the pack just like any other female. You might the Luna, that will defend the pack one day,” Selena said. “Might? You trying to make me feel good, aren’t you?” Amelia asked. Selena sighed. “Yes, I am, guilty is charged,” Selena smiled and they both laughed, creating a sense of relief. “Your mom will be proud of you,” Selena said. Amelia stared into the gentle brown eyes of Selena the only eyes belonging to the whole pack which did not seem to despise her. “But uncle Marcus blame me for what happened to Mom” She continued “he said it’s my fault that she died.” “He’s wrong.” Selena’s voice was firm. She went on “Your mother’s death was not your fault. but she loved you more than anything, and she would be proud of the woman you’ve become.” Amelia had to force herself to keep the tears from coming; she choked and swallowed hard. Her mother has been everything to her a tough, unrelenting werewolf who had chosen to settle for a human. A love that had given birth to Amelia and at the same time a hatred that had made her a target of scorn and ridicule on the part of those who believed that miscegenation was an offense against nature. When her mother had passed away suddenly, leaving baby Amelia, the pack had not hesitated to point fingers and say it was because she was half breed. Her own grandparents had wanted nothing to do with her as she was considered a blot on the family that brought bad luck into the family. Without Selena, Amelia would have been left all together as Marcus had deserted her completely. Her aunt had adopted her, given her a home, provided for her and mothered her and attempted to instill the manners of their type in her. However no matter how much of an effort Amelia put, she found herself unable to shapeshift. She now and then knew she had the spirit of the wolf within her but that was restrained by something she could not explain. ‘“I don’t even know my father,” Amelia said in a low tone. She added “Maybe if I did, I would understand why am different.” Selena sighed, pushing one of the strands of hair away from Amelia’s face. “Your father was really good man Amelia. But he was human and he was unaware of the world, ours included. When your mother died, he turned his back on you and left. He didn’t know how to bring a child like you, how to deal with issues you would come across. That doesn’t make you any less a part of this pack.” “But I can’t shift,” Amelia said, and her voice turned into small, shaky notes at the end of the sentence. “How can I be a member of this pack if I don’t resemble them at all?” Amelia asked. “Yes you can but not now, maybe you might be the supreme white wolf, who knows,” Selena said out loud with a lot of smiles. “Really? But that is a myth,” said Amelia. “Because none of them has seen this, although I am confident that one day you will do that.” Selena said. He sighed, and Amelia began to protest, “But I am an outcast, and I can’t shift.” “You are not!” Selena rebuked. Amelia was startled. She sighed and apologized. Selena grabbed the young girl’s face between her palms, making her look into Selena’s eyes. “I wish you understood, you are not defined by your capability to shift, Amelia. You have a strength that most of them will never know exist. And tonight, you will be with the pack and not as the pariah but as one of the pack, of this family.” Selena didn’t get to reply as soon as she saw Marcus, a former beta, and Amelia’s uncle, enter the door which creaked open. He was large with broad shoulders and a somewhat severe look on his face, a total contrast to Selena’s welcoming disposition. “She shouldn’t be going,” Marcus grumbled irately, his words thick with a growl. “Why?” Selena questioned. “It is a shame to the family, Selena. Yes, she can’t shift, and everyone in the pack knows that. What agenda is there in parading her infront of all these pack of shame like this?” Marcus said. Selena get up and she take a position in between Amelia and her brother, Marcus. “She belongs there, Marcus. It maybe be odd for you and the pack, but whether you like it or not, she is part of this pack!” Angrily Marcus’s eyes moved to Amelia, who looked down with embarrassment. “If only I had my way, she wouldn’t be permitted anywhere near that function. But I suppose there’s no changing your mind is there?” Marcus slowly glared at her before pushing the door and walked out, making it to bang shut on the wall. Selena turned and smiled at her gently. “Don’t let him get to you. He just can’t come to terms with the fact that this is a new era, and someone like you is fully entitled to be present there,” Amelia had hope but in her heart she couldn’t help but feel sorrow and doubt. She understood that if she attends the gathering, she will just hear sneers and whispers, but she also understood that her aunt is right. Back to the present. Amelia could sense that weight of those memories incumbent on her. She was standing at the oak tree of the assembling writhing to quell emotions that threatened to override her. But as she realized the expression on Andre Winston’s face that was simply an icy glare, all those feelings returned. Lucy made mockery of her. “Enough!” yelled Andre to silence the growing crowd. Andre stopped the mockery of Lucy, Darius stood by the corner, awaiting his wishes to come true, and Marcus was afar watching. Then Selena commenced the meeting, inviting the moon goddess, then suddenly, air became tensed, Amelia was choosen. Andre looked at her, his jaw clenched as they stared at each other. The energy between them continued to hum with a force of its own. But he was not ready to pay heed to this. “For this I will not stand!” he snarled and refused to look at her. “I will not commit to an outcast just transform into a wolf.” Andre said. He roared let out words, “This isn’t over, this is unacceptable!” ”What bond to an outcast?” he snarled softly, Amelia starred at him since she felt offended by the things he said to her. “Why her?” Lucy questioned. “Why me?” Amelia asked. André did not respond to that remark; instead, he left the gathering, Darius in the corner laughed aloud. “Well, I suppose we might be on the lookout for a new alpha,” Darius said in a low voice tone.
