Chapter one-Obscure
New York's crowded streets were throbbing with activities, people scurrying across the city to work, cabs blaring, and people navigating through the throng of people. Delivery trucks maneuver through the traffic as street sellers rush to sell their wares. The energy was palpable, with the city pulsating with the rhythm of its inhabitants' daily routines.Rose hurriedly grabbed a snack from her favorite kiosk down the alley of st. Charles street.
She walked through the bustling city streets, head down, avoiding eye contact with anyone she passed. She felt she no longer had to live in New York, among the skyscrapers and wealth.
She had a presentation which already had her nervous and a job to do, and she couldn't afford to let her feelings get in the way.
Then she looked up and saw him. A man standing on the corner, staring right at her. He was tall and imposing, with white hair and piercing blue eyes.
She blinked, and in a flash, the man was gone. But she couldn't shake the feeling that she had just seen something important, something that would change her life forever.
She kept walking, her mind racing with questions which she tried ignoring. But those eyes were familiar, she had seen it somewhere and tried to remember.
“Focus Rose kami” she said to herself. You have a presentation and you couldn't afford to be late. She put the strange encounter out of her mind and continued and headed to the main entrance of the imposing office building.
R.K Global. A financial firm which had attained their height of success in the regards of their most important staff “Rose Kami”.
She took a deep breath, while carefully stepping inside. She rode the elevator to the top floor, feeling her stomach churn with nerves.
“Ding” the sound from the elevator seemed to have echoed in her ears as the door opened.
Camila, a young light dark skinned lady with great curves greeted her while smiling, her thick red lipsticks were perfect on her lips, she wore an all black gown while her hair was styled like a ponytail. She was the receptionist of R.K global and had won several awards in the firm.
“Kami this is the best day you've waited for” She said as she led her to a large conference room.
Rose felt different, her mind wasn't prepared, she doubted Camilla wasn't attentive to her emotions.
She took a deep breath and walked into the conference room. She had five minutes left before it all began.
Hear seat was reserved, a tradition the company did for their special staff, she sat down while trying to focus on the presentation, they always need her idea, like the company couldn't work without her, a the sudden thought of the man at the mirror flashed her mind, she kept her mind wandering back to the mysterious man she had seen on the street.
The door opened and a tall, white-haired man walked into the room. He was the same man she had seen on the street, and he was looking right at her.
A shiver ran down Rose's spine as the man approached the table. He pulled out a chair and sat down across from her, his eyes never leaving hers.
"Hello, Rose," he said, his voice deep and commanding. "My name is Leo. It's a pleasure to finally meet you."
Rose's heart began pounding in her chest. She had no idea who this man was or why he was here, but she knew one thing for sure: her life would never be the same.
"I'm...I'm not sure what's going on," she stammered. “Finally meet me?”
Leo leaned back in his chair and smiled, a hint of mischief in his eyes.
Rose was speechless. She had no idea what to say or how to react. This man was clearly insane, but him across her made her feel a lost connection was found.
“We have a lot to discuss about Rose”. Leo said while adjusting the straps of his watch.
She began the presentation while trying to avoid eye contacts with the white headed man.
It was finally over, she hurriedly exchanged pleasantries with her colleagues while keeping the white headed man on her watch.
“Can we have a private conversation?” Rose said in a low tone avoiding attention of her colleagues as she stood beside him,he held her hand in a flash. She sensed the passage of time, then felt a gust of wind caress her face.
Rose stared at him, her heart racing. She had so many questions, but she didn't know how to begin.
"Your mind keeps wandering Rose probably because I called your name and how I know all about you," Leo said, she was astounded he read her mind. "It's a long story, but I'll give you the condensed version. I'm a prisoner. My family was killed due to betrayal which happened centuries ago. We descended from a long line of witches and warlocks, and we were tasked with protecting the book from those who would use its power for evil. I've trained my whole life to avenge the death of my family, to find the killer.
“What's my role in all of this” Rose said while heaving a sigh.
“I need a book, a magical one Rose, and You are the one who has been chosen to receive the book and to learn its secrets.
I know it a daunting task, but I need your help to avenge my family and save the future.”
“What make you think I'm the chosen one for your crazy task”
“Only a pure heart can receive the book's power, and tracing down your lineage your are the chosen one.”
She was overwhelmed by everything he said. She had never had believed in magic or anything supernatural, but this man was making her question everything she thought she knew. She wanted to believe him, but it was all so far
Her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of a loud crash coming from the hallway outside the conference room. They hurriedly ran across offices to the scene of the crash.
The walls were covered in black scorch marks, and the floor was littered with debris. There her colleagues lying on the ground, groaning in pain. then she saw a figure dressed in black, his face hidden by a hood. In his hand was a green glowing staff.
