Third grade was the year the world quietly split into before and after. Before, school was just a routine of neat notebook margins, sharpened pencils, and quiet observation from the middle row. Then came the seating chart shuffle, and Gabriel became my bench mate. We were both nine years old, easily distracted, and completely unbothered by the quiet pressures of growing up. Gabriel turned everyday classroom moments into mini-adventures—borrowing erasers he didn't need, comparing doodles in the margins of our lined notebooks, and laughing under his breath whenever the teacher turned toward the blackboard. Having him as a classmate made the long school hours fly by, but it was one specific afternoon during recess that changed everything. We were running out toward the courtyard when I stumbled, tripping over a loose shoelace that had undone itself mid-stride. Before I could even bend down to fix it, Gabriel stopped right beside me. Without a second thought, he dropped to one knee on the cool pavement, picked up the frayed laces, and carefully tied them into a neat, double-knotted bow. He looked up, gave a quick, reassuring grin, and said, "There, now you won’t fall." It was a simple gesture, but standing there under the bright afternoon sun, watching a nine-year-old Gabriel brush off his knees, something shifted inside me.
