Chapter 2

1502 Words
"Hey, Adeleke" someone called from behind me I glanced over my shoulder to see that it was Chris. Chris was another one of my friends, we weren't really the spill all your secrets to each other friends but we sometimes got together to play sports, and as you've just heard he had a penchant for using my surname instead of my first Savannah Adeleke weird right? I know that's what you get when you have Nigerian-American Parents. My mom is from the Us and my dad is from Nigeria. They're currently in the states right now but my grandma insisted I get an education in Nigeria since my parents are workaholics and they probably won't have time for me. Grandma Is a bit old fashioned, she likes to say she's a confirmed Yoruba woman "Chris, good afternoon" I greeted as he took my bag off my shoulders and put it on his, he was also about to take my books from my hands but I moved them away from his reach he gave me a look and reached for them again and I let them go. He also had a penchant for doing that too, you know, carrying my stuff for me whenever we're walking together. "So are we still on for Sunday? he asked walking by my side " Sunday?? What's going on then?" "our rematch? with the seniors? how could you have forgotten, you were the one that was clamoring for this rematch, I remember you saying something like they cheated remember? he explained bumping my shoulder playfully with an accusing expression on his face. " it completely skipped my mind" I began apologetically "are you sure it's this Sunday?" I asked with a grim expression I didn't like booking any plans for the weekends in case David wanted to hang out, since he wasn't big on hanging out during school hours and he loved making Impromptu plans I liked to be free. "yes, it is, I'm very sure. why do you ask? Do you have something else planned? just cancel it, this rematch is very important" "She doesn't have any plans she has to cancel but she likes to keep herself available in case her deadbeat boyfriend decides to spare her a little of his time," Jess remarked in a snide manner walking by Chris's side. I didn't even notice her there and I hate it when she talks about David like that. Have I told you guys that Jess hates David, No? OK. She really does but she loathes him and I'm not sure why. She claims it's because I deserve better but she just doesn't understand. You see Jess has never had a boyfriend, like never, not even one. She said she has crushes, guys she likes to admire but that's where it stops and she is really beautiful, she's tall, about 5ft8 one of the tallest students in our school, light skin and a full head of curly hair that make her look like a half cast. The amount of looks or double takes she gets from guys when she walks into a room is a lot but she hardly notices and most times guys feel intimidated by her probably why they hardly speak to her. She can also be a bit mean, like right now. "Don't start Jess, it's too early for this" I said lethargically. Didn't realize I was this tired until now. I yawned a bit using my hands to cover my mouth "Can we discuss something else? Chris, I might not be able to make it on Sunday. I already made plans with David" I finished with a remorseful expression. "No biggie, we'll play next time then," he said handing me my stuff and walking across the yard with his hands in his pocket. The boy's hostel was on the other side of the school and it was a long walk from the classes. Maybe that was to deter the boys from going to the girl's hostel, well that plan didn't work. "And I think I'll be leaving too" Jess initiated with a squeezed face "your misplaced knight in shiny armor is here right on time when no one's around as usual," she said with a pointed look ahead leaving me and walking towards the hostel. "Hey, babe" David took Chris's place by my side and touched my back gently to get my attention. "Heyy," I say grinning giving him a side hug because of all the stuff I was carrying. "What were you and Chris talking about?" He asked dismissively "Oh, we had a basketball match on Sunday" I answered back. "You guys seemed pretty Cozy," he said trying to sound indifferent. This was not the first time David commented on me getting comfortable with another guy, He was Jealous, and I sometimes liked it when he got like that, it showed that he cared, that he loved me, and was bothered that other guys might be trying to steal me away from him. But other times it kind of bugged me cause it insinuated that he didn't trust me. "Not sure what you mean by that," I said instead of instigating him further. "It was just a friendly conversation" "Friendly? that guy doesn't want to be your friend, he's in love with you" David retorted bitterly. I sighed rolling my eyes "every guy that speaks to me is in love with me, you know whenever you make statements like that it shows me that you don't trust me and that hurts my feelings" His gaze softened " Savvy" he started, he usually uses that nickname when he's trying to be cute " it's not you I don't trust, it's every other guy around you, everyone knows that Chris is a player, he doesn't care if the girl he's after is in a relationship or not, that was how he ruined senior Adam's relationship by sleeping with his girlfriend and the girl wasn't even in our school, he has a reputation and I'm just trying to protect you" "well Chris and I have been friends for a while and he knows I'm with you," I said staring into his eyes so he can see how serious I am "I draw the line at cheating David, you know this" And I really did, I had strong feelings about a partner cheating on the other. It was wrong, there was no other word to describe it, if you cannot be in a monogamous relationship then don't date someone that expects monogamy. There are a lot of open relationships that are thriving these days just look at Will Smith and Jada( I'm not sure if that's a good reference but... ). Open relationships are not for me though, if you're going to be with me then be with me, just me. David shrugged his shoulders and looked away. He clearly didn't have anything to add to the discussion anymore but he still had that sour look on his face. "So are we still on for this weekend? I asked, deflecting, I didn't want to waste the little time we had together talking about something that made no sense. " Yeah, probably" he replied vaguely I hated that word, it was either probably or maybe or possibly all words meaning he might change his mind last minute without any excuse. "Ok, you know what let's do Saturday so I'll be able to play ball with Chris and the group on Sunday " that idea worked out well for everyone "Yh, sure Saturday works fine" I was surprised he agreed but I wasn't going to look a gift horse in the mouth. I pulled his tie so he would bend, stood on my tiptoes, and met him halfway to kiss him and I was really shocked when he pulled me to himself and deepened the kiss holding me for a few long seconds before letting me go. David was uncomfortable with doing stuff like this in public so I was very happy that we were making progress. He squeezed my hand and walked off in the other direction going towards the shops, probably to buy something, the shops don't close until 10 in the evening and everyone was expected to be in their hostels by 11. As I was walking towards my hostel, grinning to myself I noticed that no one was around, David and I were alone and what Jess said came to my mind "right on time when no one is around as usual" But I dismissed the thought, it was just a coincidence. I wished I didn't, I wished I acknowledged the signs, I wished I listened. I'm a smart girl, I read books and I can be quite perceptive when I want to be but you see love......love has a way of blinding even the smartest of people that's why now when someone tells me that love is blind I tell them that my love wears glasses and has 4 eyes.
