Chapter 1-A Dream on the Edge
CHAPTER ONE
A Dream on the Edge
The rain fell steadily over the city, turning the busy streets into shimmering ribbons of light. Inside a small fashion studio tucked between a bakery and an old bookstore, Aria Bennett carefully stitched the final pearl onto a champagne-colored evening gown.
She leaned back, admiring her work with tired but hopeful eyes. The gown represented weeks of sleepless nights, endless sketches, and the determination that had carried her through every obstacle since she founded Bennett Atelier three years earlier.
Her dream had never been to become famous.
She simply wanted to create dresses that made women feel confident, beautiful, and unforgettable.
The soft chime of her phone interrupted the quiet.
Her smile disappeared the moment she read the notification.
FINAL NOTICE. Outstanding rent must be paid within seven days or the premises will be repossessed.
Aria slowly lowered the phone.
Seven days.
That was all she had left.
She glanced around the tiny studio that had become her second home. Every mannequin, sewing machine, fabric roll, and sketchbook told the story of sacrifices most people would never see. She had invested every savings she owned into her business, believing hard work would eventually be enough.
Now, she wasn’t so sure.
A gentle knock sounded on the glass door before Sophie Morgan, her assistant and closest friend, stepped inside carrying two cups of coffee.
“I thought you could use this,” Sophie said with a warm smile.
“You always know.”
Sophie placed the coffee on the worktable and immediately noticed Aria’s expression.
“What happened?”
Aria handed her the phone.
After reading the notice, Sophie sighed heavily.
“They’re serious this time.”
“I know.”
“What about the investors you met last week?”
“They declined.”
“The boutique in Riverside?”
“They cancelled the order.”
Silence settled over the room.
Sophie finally looked at her friend.
“So… what’s the plan?”
Aria forced a smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes.
“The same as always.”
“Which is?”
“Keep working until something changes.”
Sophie admired that determination, but today even she struggled to believe it would be enough.
Later that afternoon, Aria carefully packed three finished gowns into garment bags and drove across town to deliver them to one of her last remaining clients.
The boutique owner greeted her politely before leading her into the office.
“I’m sorry, Aria.”
Those four words were enough.
The owner slid an envelope across the desk.
“Our company is reducing expenses. We won’t be continuing our partnership.”
Aria stared at the envelope containing the final payment.
Months of work.
Gone with a single conversation.
She thanked the owner politely, refusing to let her disappointment show until she reached the parking lot.
Only then did the tears begin to fall.
Not because she was weak.
Because she was exhausted.
She had spent years believing perseverance guaranteed success.
Today, that belief felt painfully fragile.
As she sat inside her car watching the rain blur the city lights, an unfamiliar email notification appeared on her phone.
From: Nightingale Enterprises
Subject: A Business Proposal
Her eyebrows drew together.
She had never contacted Nightingale Enterprises.
She had certainly never expected them to know her name.
Curious, she opened the message.
“Miss Bennett,
Your talent has not gone unnoticed.
Mr. Gabriel Nightingale would like to meet with you tomorrow regarding a private business proposal.
Transportation will be arranged should you accept.
Please respond before 9:00 p.m.
Aria read the email three times.
Gabriel Nightingale.
The billionaire CEO known for his brilliant business mind and emotionless reputation.
Why would someone like him want to meet someone like her?
She looked once more at the eviction notice lying on the passenger seat.
Perhaps this was the opportunity she had been praying for.
Or perhaps…
It was the beginning of the biggest mistake of her life.
