CHAPTER SIX Broken Trust The morning after their kiss, Aria woke with a smile she couldn’t hide. For the first time since signing the contract, Nightingale Manor felt less like a temporary residence and more like a home. She replayed the previous night’s memories as she dressed, her fingertips brushing against her lips. Had it really happened? Had Gabriel Nightingale—the man who claimed he didn’t believe in love—kissed her? A gentle knock sounded on her bedroom door. “Come in.” Evelyn entered with a warm smile. “Good morning, Mrs. Nightingale.” “Good morning, Evelyn.” “Mr. Nightingale asked me to let you know he’ll be waiting for you in the garden.” Aria’s heart fluttered. “Thank you.” The gardens were peaceful, with the morning sun casting golden light across the roses. Gabriel stood beside the fountain, holding two cups of coffee. “I remembered how you like it,” he said, handing one to her. She accepted it with a smile. “You remembered.” “I’ve been paying more attention than I realized.” For a moment, they simply looked at one another. Then Gabriel spoke. “About last night…” Aria nodded. “I don’t regret it.” His shoulders relaxed. “Neither do I.” “So… what happens now?” He looked down at the coffee in his hands. “I don’t know.” She laughed softly. “I never thought I’d hear Gabriel Nightingale say those words.” He smiled. “I’m learning.” Before either of them could say more, Daniel hurried across the lawn. His expression was grave. “Sir, you need to see this.” He handed Gabriel a tablet. Gabriel’s face hardened as he read the screen. “What is it?” Aria asked. He hesitated before showing her. The headline made her stomach drop. NIGHTINGALE MARRIAGE EXPOSED AS BUSINESS CONTRACT Below it was a photograph of the first page of their confidential agreement. Someone had leaked it. Within hours, reporters surrounded Nightingale Enterprises. Television crews broadcast live from outside the headquarters. Social media exploded with accusations. “Did you marry for money?” “Was your wedding a fraud?” “Is your relationship fake?” The questions followed them everywhere. Inside the boardroom, Gabriel faced furious shareholders. “You’ve embarrassed this company,” one director said. “Our stock has dropped five percent this morning,” another added. Gabriel remained calm. “My personal life has no bearing on the strength of this company.” “It does now.” He stood. “The meeting is over.” Without waiting for a response, he walked out. Meanwhile, Aria returned to her fashion studio only to find angry comments flooding her business page. Gold digger. She only married him for his money. Her success is fake. She stared at the screen, tears filling her eyes. Everything she had worked for was being questioned. Sophie quickly closed the laptop. “Don’t read them.” “They’re saying my designs don’t matter.” “They’re wrong.” “But what if people believe them?” Sophie took her hands. “The people who know your work will never doubt your talent.” Aria wanted to believe her. She truly did. That evening, Gabriel returned to the manor carrying a folder. “I know who leaked the contract.” Aria looked up. “Who?” He opened the folder. Inside were financial records and security reports. “It wasn’t Victoria.” Aria frowned. “Then who?” “Someone inside my company.” “Why?” “They’ve been trying to force me out as CEO for months.” “And now they’ve used me?” Gabriel nodded. “They knew exposing the contract would damage both of us.” Silence settled between them. Finally, Aria whispered, “I’m sorry.” He looked surprised. “For what?” “For bringing more problems into your life.” He stepped closer. “You didn’t.” “But—” “You didn’t.” His voice was firm. “They attacked you because of me.” She looked into his eyes. “I don’t want to be the reason you lose everything.” He gently took her hands. “Listen to me.” She did. “I’ve spent years protecting my company.” He squeezed her hands softly. “But if I ever had to choose between the company and you…” He paused. “There wouldn’t be a choice.” Aria felt tears spill down her cheeks. The contract might have brought them together. But the feelings growing between them were becoming impossible to deny. Outside the manor, hidden behind the gates, a black sedan watched the house. A man lowered his phone after taking another photograph. “They’re stronger than expected,” he said into the receiver. The voice on the other end answered calmly. “Then it’s time to tell Aria the secret Gabriel has kept from everyone.” The call ended. The man smiled. By tomorrow… Their love would face its greatest test yet. The rain began just after midnight. Aria stood alone in the library, unable to sleep. The headlines, the leaked contract, and the uncertainty surrounding their future weighed heavily on her mind. She reached for a book to distract herself when she heard voices coming from Gabriel’s office down the hall. The door wasn’t completely closed. “I can’t keep this from her forever,” Gabriel said. Daniel’s voice answered quietly. “She deserves to know.” “I know.” “Then tell her before someone else does.” Aria froze. Tell her what? She stepped away before either man noticed her and returned to her room, her heart racing. The following morning, Gabriel knocked on her door. “Can we talk?” She opened it, studying his face. “You were going to tell me something.” He looked surprised. “You heard us.” “I heard enough.” He sighed. “I never wanted you to find out this way.” “Find out what?” He hesitated before speaking. “Your parents’ accident…” She felt her chest tighten. “What about them?” Gabriel lowered his eyes. “The construction company responsible for the bridge collapse was once owned by my father.” The room fell silent. Aria stared at him, unable to speak. “It happened years before I became CEO,” he continued. “My father covered up safety failures. After his death, I discovered the truth while reviewing old company files.” Tears filled Aria’s eyes. “You knew?” “Not at first.” “And you never told me?” “I wanted to.” “When?” “Every day.” She stepped backward. “My parents died because of your family’s company.” “I know.” “And you asked me to marry you.” “I didn’t know your name was connected to the case until after we signed the contract.” She shook her head, trying to process everything. “I don’t know what to believe anymore.” “You can believe this…” His voice cracked for the first time. “I would trade everything I own to change what happened.” Unable to bear the weight of the revelation, Aria left the manor. She drove to the only place that had ever brought her peace. Her grandmother’s cottage. The small house sat at the edge of a quiet meadow, unchanged by the passing years. Inside, everything reminded her of home. The old sewing machine. The faded photographs. The rocking chair where her grandmother had taught her to stitch. She sat on the floor and cried. Not only for the parents she had lost… But for the man she had unexpectedly fallen in love with. Back at the manor, Gabriel blamed himself. Evelyn placed a comforting hand on his shoulder. “You love her.” He closed his eyes. “I never meant to.” “No one ever does.” “What if I’ve lost her?” Evelyn smiled gently. “Then fight for her.” Late that evening, Daniel arrived with shocking news. “We’ve identified the person behind the threats.” Gabriel looked up immediately. “Who?” Daniel placed a thick file on the desk. “It wasn’t Victoria.” Gabriel opened it. Every page pointed to one man. Richard Sterling. A former executive of Nightingale Enterprises. Years earlier, Gabriel had exposed Richard’s financial fraud, leading to his arrest and the collapse of his career. “He blames me for everything,” Gabriel murmured. Daniel nodded. “He hired investigators, leaked the contract, sabotaged Aria’s car, and arranged the photographs.” Gabriel’s jaw tightened. “But why involve Aria’s parents?” Daniel looked uneasy. “Because Richard discovered the old bridge case. He knew it would destroy your relationship if Aria learned the truth.” Gabriel closed the file slowly. “He used her grief as a weapon.” “I’m afraid so.” Meanwhile, Aria sat on the porch of the cottage, wrapped in a blanket as the rain finally stopped. She remembered every moment she had shared with Gabriel. His awkward attempts at making coffee. Their walk through the gardens. The boat ride. Their first kiss. None of those memories felt fake. Yet the secret between them felt impossibly heavy. Her phone buzzed. A single message appeared. From Gabriel: “I know I don’t deserve your forgiveness. But everything I feel for you is real. I never lied about that. I’ll be at the old lighthouse tomorrow at sunset. Whether you come or not, I’ll understand. But I couldn’t let another day pass without telling you that I love you.” Aria read the message again. And again. A tear rolled down her cheek. For the first time, Gabriel Nightingale had said the words he had spent years running from. I love you. The question was no longer whether their contract had become real. It had. The only question left was whether love could survive a past neither of them had chosen. Far away, Richard Sterling watched the cottage through binoculars. He smiled coldly. “Tomorrow,” he whispered. “It all ends.” He slipped into his car and disappeared into the darkness, already planning his final move.
