THE SYMPTOMS OF CHANGE

1372 Words
Ethan groggily got out of bed, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. His mom had left a note on the kitchen counter reminding him about his doctor's appointment today. He crumpled the note in his hand, ignoring the scheduled visit. "Mom, I'm heading to school!" Ethan yelled from the door. "Ethan, wait! You have a doctor's appointment today! We need to discuss your condition," his mom replied from the living room. "Can't it wait? I've got a lot of catching up to do at school," Ethan said, already out the door. At school, Ethan's friends and classmates swarmed him, eager to know about his rapid recovery. "Dude, you're looking great! What happened?" Alex, one of his friends, asked. "I, uh, just got some rest, I guess," Ethan replied with a shrug. "That's amazing! You were out for days, and now you're back to normal?" Brian asked, raising an eyebrow. As Ethan chatted with his friends, his gaze wandered across the hallway. That's when he saw Emily laughing with her friends. His friends noticed his gaze and nudged him. "Dude, go talk to her! She's been asking about you," Alex said. Ethan hesitated, his eyes locked on Emily's smile. "Never mind, don't even bother. I'm good," he said, looking away. His friends exchanged knowing glances, but Ethan didn't elaborate. ALEX POV We had all shrugged it off eventually, but I couldn't stop thinking about how different Ethan looked from before. He talked differently, acted differently, and even smelled different. I wasn't sure, but there was something mysterious about him. "Hey Ethan!" I shouted as he sighted me. "Aren't we still going to the cafeteria together...with us or do you have some other plans ahead?" I asked. "Well...uhmm...you see...I don't think I can make it. I'm sorry...it's just I have some other things to do..." He said, interrupting himself. "Like what...?" I asked. "I have to go...I have sports to attend. I don't know why I suddenly have this urge to play basketball, even though I don't know how...it's like this feel of enthusiasm and energy surging through me!" Ethan exclaimed. "I'm so sorry, guys...maybe later? Please?" I sighed, "Okay Ethan, have fun," I said. "Thanks, Alex." "Okay, I'll see you guys later...bye." We waved at him. "Bye Ethan." And it was then that I knew something was up. ETHAN POV I waved at the boys. "There's something about me that doesn't feel quite right. I feel different...in a while, I feel more alive!!" I thought. I approached the hall we use for our basketball court. It was a very wide place with so many faces, some I hadn't known. But there was one face that stood out, and that's when I saw her again, Emily, the prettiest girl in high school...well, that's what I think. She was standing next to her friends, talking and practicing for the basketball they're about to start. There was a sudden feeling that arose, and I was nervous. "Seeing Emily here felt like everything," I thought. "Hey you!" I heard a voice that echoed right next to me. I froze in shock. My voice trembled to utter out a word. "Y...yess sir." "What are you doing here? You have no business in here," it was the coach. "Yeah...I...I...I came here to see you." "Well, I just wanted you to include me in your sport or game or whatever..." I said. Then I noticed the other students cackling and laughing at me. I felt ashamed. "Okay, then show me what you've got," he said, tossing a ball to me. I grabbed it, aiming for a shot, when I realized Emily staring at me. I was scared and a bit nervous, but I didn't let that get to me. So, I took deep breaths, and then I took the shot. The sound of the ball swishing through the net sent a big sigh of relief. It was like a huge burden carried off me. The coach was impressed. "Nice work, kiddo!" he said, amused. "Okay, you're in." he continued. "Ohh, thank you, sir. Thank you so much, sir!" I said frantically. "Don't call me sir, call me coach," he said. "Ohh, sorry," I apologized. "No, it's fine," he replied. Ethan's eyes widened as Coach Thompson handed him a jersey with the team logo. "Welcome to the squad, kid! You've got potential." Ethan Here's the continuation of the story: As Ethan trained, he felt a rush of excitement. He was determined to impress not just Coach Thompson but also Emily, his crush, who occasionally watched from the sidelines. "Whoa, nice shot, Ethan!" Coach Thompson praised. "You're a natural!" Ethan grinned, feeling a surge of confidence. But as the training intensified, he started noticing strange sensations – his heart racing, his senses heightened, and an unfamiliar aggression creeping in. "What's going on with me?" Ethan wondered, feeling uneasy. He excused himself and rushed to the bathroom to collect his thoughts. That's when he noticed slight changes in his behavior – his eyes seemed sharper, his reflexes quicker. After the training session, Ethan headed to an empty classroom, curious about these newfound sensations. As he sat down, he realized his senses were indeed heightened – colors seemed more vivid, sounds clearer. Ethan's mind whirled with questions. What was happening to him? Was it related to the basketball training or something else entirely? As the classroom emptied, Ethan sat lost in thought, wondering what was happening to him. Suddenly, students rushed in, chatting and laughing, as the lecture was about to begin. The teacher entered, and the students greeted her with a chorus of "Good morning, ma'am!" The teacher smiled and asked them to sit down. As the lecture commenced, Ethan's senses became increasingly heightened. He could hear the scratching of pens on paper, the rustling of pages, and even the faint sound of ink flowing through pens. The sounds overwhelmed him – the creaking of the old building, the chirping of birds outside, and the distant hum of traffic. Ethan's heart raced as he struggled to focus on the lesson. The teacher noticed Ethan's distraction and approached him. "Ethan, is everything okay? You seem a bit... distant." Ethan panted heavily, shaking his head, trying to compose himself. "Nothing's wrong, ma'am. I'm fine." The teacher raised an eyebrow but let it slide. A few minutes later, he asked the teacher, "Please, ma'am, I would like to be excused to go to the bathroom?" The teacher nodded. As he stepped out of the classroom, the cacophony of sounds intensified. He felt like he was losing control, his senses on high alert. In the bathroom, Ethan's thoughts swirled. What was happening to him? Why were his senses heightened? He felt terrified, trembling with fear. As he splashed water on his face, the sounds seemed to amplify – the dripping faucet, the creaking pipes, and his own ragged breathing. Ethan's mind reeled, agonizing over the mystery unfolding within him. After washing his face, Ethan gazed into the mirror, shocked to see his skin turning pale. Terrified, he whispered, "What's happening to me?" Realizing the gravity of the situation, Ethan quickly put on his hoodie to cover his face. He didn't want anyone to notice the changes. Rushing back to class, Ethan sat quietly, trying to blend in. His friends noticed something was off and asked, "Dude, what's wrong?" Ethan shook his head, unwilling to share the truth. "Nothing, just didn't get enough sleep." His friends accepted the excuse, but Ethan knew he was hiding the truth. The strange sensations and changes in his body were intensifying, and he felt like he was losing control. But Alex knew something was off. He couldn't shake off the feeling that Ethan was hiding something from him and their friends. And as they parted ways after school, Alex couldn't help but wonder what secrets Ethan was keeping. Meanwhile, Ethan walked home, his mind racing with questions and fears. What was happening to him? Why was he changing? And what did it all mean? The uncertainty hung over him like a dark cloud, casting a shadow over his newfound confidence on the basketball court. Little did he know, his journey was just beginning, and the truth would soon unravel in unexpected ways.
