August 10th, 2017 7:59pm Le Bernardin I pulled up in my beat up 2014 Dodge Charger in front of Valet. I quickly jumped out, pulling my knee high black dress down from riding up, and tossed my keys to the young, clumsy valet boy. "Sorry, I'm late! Don't hit anything, please!" I shouted over my shoulder as I attempted to run in heels through the doors. I scanned the busy restaurant for a group of girls that may stand out. I didn't know how typical witches dressed these days. Do they wear pointy hats? Do they dress in all black? What exactly was I looking for? "May I help you?" The sweet usher asked. I smiled at her nervously. "Table for Curtis?" She drug her finger down her paper and smiled when she found the name. "Of course. The rest of your party is here and waiting. Please follow me." I followed her through the tables mostly consisting of older couples sharing a quiet dinner together, clinking wine glasses and laughing amongst each other. It was just as fancy as I figured it would be and it wasn't my scene. I typically liked loud bars and sitting at home watching bad horror movies. I wasn't the social type. We came up to a table with three young, beautiful girls sat laughing. They had wine glasses out filled with red wine and an empty seat with an empty glass waiting. The usher held her hand out, catching the girls attention, and they all stood. "Nevaeh!" I was greeted by the closest girl. She was a couple feet taller than me in her heels and her strawberry blonde hair was French braided on one side. Her goldish eyes reminded me of the sun and they were full of mystery. "I'm Velvet. It's so good to finally meet you." The second girl held her hand out to me and I took it. She had a firm grip. Her black hair was pulled high in a loose bun. She too seemed to have magic hands when it came to putting on make up because she looked flawless. Her long, black cocktail dress hugged her small frame tightly. When she smiled she revealed perfect white teeth. "My name is Kelsie. It's nice to meet you." She winked before taking her seat. The last girl stuck out a pale hand. She had red hair and a group of freckles on each cheek. She was beautiful, like a painting. She seemed to prefer a pants suit verse skin tight dresses like the other two. Her nails scratched the side of my hand when she let go. "Melonie." She nodded with a slight smile and sat back down. "Now that we are all together..." She waited for me to sit before taking her seat. Our waitress poured some wine into my glass. Velvet waved at her to leave the bottle and waited for her to leave. She clasped her hands together before smiling at me. "Tell us...How did your spell workout." I was silent. How did I answer that? This was all still very strange to me. I was expecting to walk up to a table with an old man waiting on me. But for real black witches to be sitting here in front of me asking how a spell went that they casted on me? "Um...Good...Great, actually!" "Yeah?" Velvet seemed excited about this. "Details, girl!" Kelsie waved her wine glass towards me. I let out a nervous laugh. "He-uh...He asked me out." "It was a man." Velvet smirked as if she knew this already. "Is he cute?" "Gorgeous!" I sighed in relief. "I've had a crush on him since early high school. He told me he's liked me this whole time. I really had no idea!" The excitement from talking about it quickly died. The girls must have noticed. "What?" Velvet asked. "I'm just worried that all of this...It's not real. That he's under some love spell and is forced to love me." They exchanged long looks before busting out laughing. I was confused, and a bit angry, at their amusement. "Honey, we didn't cast a love spell. He's not under some trance that makes him think he's in love with you." Velvet giggled a little bit. "We casted a spell to bring you your hearts desires, the things that you deserve. It's like a new job, your dream job, calling you and saying they have a spot for you with great pay, great benefits and all. In your case, it's the man of your dreams finally finding you after all these years. He came to you. You were just in the right spot at the right time." "He pined after you just as much as you did him. We just gave fate a little...shove in the right direction," Melonie added. "I won that bet, by the way. You two better pay up!" Kelsie demanded. I raised an eyebrow. Velvet rolled her eyes and shook her head. "We had a bet going. Kelsie bet it was about a man in your life." I laughed nervously. That wasn't weird at all. I tucked a lose hair behind my ear and sipped from my glass. I wasn't much of a wine drinker but right now if it had alcohol in it I didn't give a crap. "So, what's the price? What do I owe you for your spell?" I asked. I wasn't sure if they were offended by my question but the look they gave me sent goosebumps up my arms. "We don't want your money," Kelsie said coldly. "What Kelsie means." Velvet shot her a glare. "Is we don't expect payment. Like we said before, the first one if free. We just want you to see that getting everything you deserve is easy and simple. Being black witches is so frowned upon but we don't hurt anyone. We don't work with the devil or bad spirits. So many people turn their heads away from witches like us and it hurts." "We just want to be accepted like everyone else. We don't shed the blood of virgins or whatever those Christian bastards are always preaching about. They are the ones that gives us witches bad reputations," Melonie says. I leaned forward in my seat. "So why do other witches give you a bad name? If you're not going around hexing people or controlling people's minds with spells then why do people fear you so much?" "They fear the power we have. They think we are going to use it for evil. A lot of other witches practice white magic. They don't mess around with blood magick or dark magick at all because it's powerful stuff. We don't like to be held back by the fear of karma," Velvet answers. I thought hard about what they had said. Something didn't sit right with me, though. If they weren't using their magick for bad then why call themselves black witches? "We're trying to advert people's thinking of black witches," Melonie said as if reading my mind. She nods and smiles slightly. "I'm clairvoyant. I try not to be inside people's head's because they tend to get offended but sometimes things slip through." "She's also a heavy Empath. Don't take it personally if she seems distant around you. Picking up on other people's emotions takes a toll on her own," Velvet says. I took a deep breath in through my nose and blew it out my mouth slowly trying to settle my rapid heart beat. My mind was chaotic and as much as I tried silencing it knowing Melonie could get inside of it at anytime, it wasn't working. I replayed everything they said in my head countless times. They seemed to be kind woman. I'm not sure they would give me the time of day if I didn't know who they really were. One thing still wasn't clear to me; what did they want with me? "So what do you say? Would you like to join our little coven and dive deep into your hearts true desires?" Kelsie asked. I glanced between the three of them in a long silence. "Yeah," I answered, feeling confident. "I'm ready."
