The Sea
Thassa was swimming with the turtles and they were guiding her along, like little luminous lanterns in the depths of a midnight sea. The water around them glowed azure and their shells shone phosphorescently as if they had brought a bit of moonlight down to show her the way. The gentle undulations of their movement kept constant time while she followed them through cool, tranquil waters that remain untouched by sunlight until it rises above again on another day. She swam around the edge of a giant coral reef, surrounded by flashes of color and life. As she passed each outcropping or cave, new school of fish would appear and allow her to swim amongst them. She felt in awe of their beauty as they moved gracefully through the water like silver darts among the shadows. As if sensing her presence, a giant Manta Ray suddenly emerged from the deep and glided towards her. Its wingspan was immense, stretching out to either side like an angel's embrace. S he wanted to reach out and touch it but knew this would spook the creature away so she kept still, allowing it to glide past as if in slow motion. As she watched the Manta Ray vanish back into the murky depths, she couldn't help but feel a deep sense of peace. She felt like all her worries had been swept away and that no matter what happened in life, everything would work out alright in the end. The sun began to set, painting the sky in a thousand shades of pink and orange as she swim towards the beach. She saw the starfishes moving slowly, like tiny stars twinkling in an everchanging kaleidoscope. They glittered and sparkled with ethereal beauty as they undulated across the sea floor, their five arms outstretched in a curious embrace of everything around them. The colors changed from black to dark blue to bright pink and back again so quickly that it almost seemed like they were putting on a celestial ballet show for her solitary audience. She emerged from the water and crawl atop the sand, feeling it beneath her scales as it began to cool in the evening light. Gently wiping away droplets of saltwater that clung to her skin like jewels, she took a moment to appreciate being alive before searching for a dry spot on shore. The chill of the late autumn air hit her like an icy wind coming off an arctic glacier and she shivered, soothed by only one thought - warmth was just ahead. With strength born from adventure at sea, she strode forward onto land's edge until pale sands faded into lush green grasses which brushed against scales. She faded into a dreamless sleep, the rhythmic sound of her pushing breath and the lullaby of waves against shore were gentle onslaughts to her drowsiness. Her muscles softened , her body sunk down. The sun warmed her scaly skin and the morning dew beaded droplets of refreshment along the length of her body as she basked in a moment just for herself. Gradually, the sun began to rise and its orange hues lit up against her scales making them glimmer like turquoise gemstones. She yawned and stretched her long body pushing herself up onto the sand. The day was new and she felt ready to explore, to wander. With one large leap she plunged into the water and swam off into the sea splashing water all around her with a loud splash. She swam, content in the knowledge that she was free and unencumbered. She moved swiftly through the salty water, her tail gracefully propelling her forward until she came to a large coral reef brimming with life. Reef fish of all colors swirled around like an underwater kaleidoscope and sea turtles peacefully glided over the colorful corals. The siren was mesmerized by the beauty surrounding her and knew this must be where she belonged. She submerged to touch one of the coral heads, and instantly felt a connection with it. The sensation spread through her entire body, like an electric shock that warmed her from head to toe. For a moment she floated there in ecstasy, feeling as if time had stopped and she had become part of the ocean forever. When she resurfaced, the siren suddenly felt a wave of gratitude towards the sea for taking her in and giving her a home. She vowed to protect it with all her heart, for going forward it was no longer just an environment that contained creatures that needed protecting-it was now her family. With newfound purpose, the siren dove back beneath the waves and swam off into the horizon. From that day forward, she dedicated her life to preserving and protecting her new home in whatever way she could. She taught other creatures of the sea how to live in harmony with their environment, sharing stories of all its beauty and bounty with any who would listen. She decided to swim back to the beach, cutting through the shimmering turquoise water with effortless grace. She passes by a group of starfish that tumbled through the undulating submarine hues and swam along the seafloor, their colorful patterned arms quivering lazily as they glided past sunken treasures. They turned gracefully around each other in a mesmerizing spiral dance, like living comets with rainbow tails following one another into eternity. She picked a few starfish carefully, studying their golden curls as they lay in her palms. They had a peculiar beauty to them – five limbed and perfect, with each arm curved outward like pale crescents outlined against the deep blue sea. Carefully she placed them back onto the sandstone ledge from which she'd taken them, watching as they slowly crept back towards the shoreline waves that threatened to carry them away again. She reached for a handful of shells peeking through the sand and felt their rough to shiny texture and weight in her hands. The shimmers of light from all the colors reflecting off each shell, diamond-like white, blueish purple, sparkled on them like glittering stars against a midnight sky. She held them close as she swam back out into open waters, feeling a calmness wash over her at each stroke of her paddle-like tail. After gathering enough sea shells, she made her way to a secret cove she had discovered years ago. This place was home to an old shipwreck, left long ago when careless mariners strayed too close to the reef. Here were hidden treasures of a different sort—everything from pieces of rope and tools used by sailors in the past, to colorful sea glass and even a few coins. She was well aware that much of the treasure had already been plucked from the water by divers, but she never gave up hope that one day she might come across something special. The water was calm, and the sun sparkled off their sharp spines. She sat in the warm sand, her hands full of treasures. Little pieces of ocean life lay scattered around her as she painstakingly counted each colorful sea shells. The sun shone high in the sky, casting a light glow on the beach and making everything sparkle beneath its gaze. Her fingertips ran along their shiny backs as they tumbled from one hand to another while she admired them with pleasure and delight! Suddenly, a rumbling noise came from the sea. She lifted her head to the sky and noticed a magical-looking dolphin leaping high out of the water. It was holding something in its mouth, so she walked closer to get a better look. To her amazement the dolphin was carrying a pearl, the most beautiful pearl she had ever seen. She knew at once what it meant. All her dreams were coming true; this necklace was truly magical and would bring her all that she wished for! The dolphin dove back into the water and disappeared as quickly as it had come, leaving behind a sparkle in its wake. Thassa smiled as she took the pearl in her hand, feeling its smoothness and radiance. She could feel a warm energy emanating from it, one that made her heart skip a beat with excitement and anticipation. She carefully tied the pearl to a string of shells and placed it around her neck – immediately feeling its power course through her veins.
