Chapter Four

1003 Words
Evan POV “What time is it?” I shouted over to Kayla, it must be nearly midnight, it felt like we’d been dancing for ages. Kayla pulled her phone out of her bra to check, “you have..10 minutes,” she replied, holding up her phone so I could see for myself. This was it, I was about to get my wolf. I beamed at her, I’d been waiting for this moment, the excitement bubbling in my chest. Suddenly, a tap on my shoulder burst that bubble of excitement, as I turned I found myself face to face with the last person I’d expected. Lucas. He had a sheepish look on his face, something I wasn’t used to. “What? Talking to me now are you?” I scowled at him, did he really think I was going to play nice after being ignored for three years? “I..er, look. Is there somewhere we can talk?” He was nervous, that was unlike him. But I didn’t care, it was my birthday and the count down was on - I wanted to enjoy the moment, not have it ruined. “Can it wait? I’m not sure if you remember but it’s my birthday? I’m turning 18? Any of this ringing a bell?” I raised an eyebrow at him, fully aware my tone was mega b***h right now. “You’ve had plenty of time, years in fact, to talk to me.. you can wait a few mere minutes more.” I went to turn away but he grabbed my arm. Not cool. I saw red. “Don’t you dare ruin this for me you absolute jack ass! You’ve ignored me for three years now, and what you waltz in now and expect me to just do whatever you say? I have news for you pal..it doesn’t work like that..” I caught the scent before I heard the strike of midnight. My eyes widened as realisation hit me. That was why he was here, stood in front of me. “Mate”. The voice in my head took me by surprise for a moment, my wolf was present “Yes, I am here.. my name’s Eve. We are one, and he is mate..” “He might be mate but he’s an asshole,” I scoffed internally. My wolf whimpered slightly, apparently she was in favour of me taking the asshole back and ignoring everything he’d done. Bringing myself back to the present, with Lucas staring intently at me, I narrowed my eyes. “You knew. You knew all this time and you ignored me?! What the hell Lucas?” I was pissed. He had a hell of a lot of explaining to do. “I’m tempted to reject you right now if I’m being completely honest,” I threatened. Lucas POV She was right, and I deserved it all. I had been a d**k to her and I wasn’t even sure where to start with all this. “An apology wouldn’t go a miss I’m sure,” Nyx scoffed, relishing in the fact he was right and had been all along. Right now, I hated him. He was meant to be on my side. “Listen, Evan..I know, I have a lot of grovelling to do. I promise I didn’t intentionally set out to hurt you..” her eyes went from mad to seething, that was the wrong thing to say. Perhaps an apology should have come first. I went to put my hand on her shoulder, wanting to have any kind of physical contact with her, but something in her face told me to back off. “Is there somewhere we can go? I do really want to talk.” I could see the internal argument Evan appeared to be having, I could only hope her wolf was arguing in my favour..even if just for Nyx’s sake. She left out a huff and folded her arms, “fine.. but you have 10 minutes.” I smiled, I would take 10 minutes if it helped win me a chance with her. “This way,” I directed her out of the gardens and up into the pack house - it was quiet inside, everyone was out enjoying the party. A few steps inside and she stopped, turning abruptly. “Okay, talk.” “I know I was a jerk, I have no excuse for that. I’m not going to make on up either, it was immature of me. We grew up like siblings, I didn’t want you in that way back then..but now..” She raised her eyebrow at me, “but now you’ve heard how strong I am, that I’m highly regarded here at Blue Moon, you’ve changed your mind? Ha!” She scoffed. This was going to be harder than I thought. “Not quite no, I mean I’m proud to hear of your achievements, and it fills me with joy that the pack love and respect you so much. But I’ll be honest..I grew up and my attitude changed. I understood why the Moon Goddess blesses us with fated mates, and I want that. I want you.” I was beginning to grovel, but I knew it would take a while. “I’m willing to do whatever it takes to make you see I’m serious about this.. about us.” Evan paused for a moment, I wanted to reach out and touch her - close the distance between us. But I knew I’d lose my arm if I even tried. It felt like years before she finally spoke, “okay, prove it. But until you do..we are just friends. Not even friends, acquaintances, I’ll decide when you’ve shown me you’re serious.” I wasn’t expecting that. I nodded, whatever it took. “Great, now if you’ll excuse me my wolf and I would like to go for a first run together and you’re kind of in the way.” As expected? It wasn’t going to be easy.
