Chapter Three

1002 Words
Evan POV The party was in full swing. Kayla and I had danced our little feet off, and I hadn’t been paying much attention to what else was going on around me. I was having fun, being the birthday girl that was all that mattered. “I fancy shots,” Kayla shouted over the music, giving me a wicked grin. Shots were always a good idea, apart from when they weren’t. But it was my birthday..which meant surely it was a good idea. I grabbed Kayla’s hand and pulled her to the bar. “Two shots of your finest tequila!” I shouted over to the barman, giving him my best dazzling smile. I took a moment to take in the party, glancing around the garden and down the bar..that’s when I noticed him. What on earth was he doing here? I hadn’t spoken to Lucas since his 18th birthday, so why did he think I’d want him at mine? Kayla gave me a nudge, I hadn’t noticed the barman placing our shots in front of us. That was good timing. I quickly downed the shot, ignoring the salt and the lemon slice. “Woah, girl you okay?” Kayla laughed nervously, before noticing who’d I’d been staring at moments earlier. “Oh..wow. I wonder what he’s doing here?” Kayla was fully up to speed on how Lucas had gone from protective, fun older brother to cold, rude asshole in the space of twelve hours.. and I’m sure, like me, she wasn’t surprised to see some she-wolf draped all over him. His reputation to play with girls feelings had made its was back to Blue Moon - his mother and father hadn’t exactly been pleased. “Beats me, not like he’d make an effort on purpose to be here for my birthday,” he’d probably all but forgotten about it. I glanced back over and noticed him staring, an unfamiliar look in his eyes. It unnerved me. What on earth was his problem? It looked like the she-wolf was giving him her best flirting skills, she looked like the rest of the bimbos that threw themselves at him. Ugh, they were all the same. She had no patience for girls like that. “Let’s go dance,” I grabbed Kayla’s hand and we made our way back to the middle of the dance floor. It was my party, he wasn’t going to put a downer on it by merely being here. Two warriors in training approached us, I recognised them from my classes. Typical warrior types, thinking most she-wolves wanted a piece. I shot Kayla a look, she nodded. Neither of us went around sleeping with guys in the pack, but a bit of harmless flirting was always fun. Turning our attention to our guests, we both did our best dirty dancing..grinding and bumping not just on them but on each other too. I glanced back over my shoulder at the bar..Lucas was gone, but the she-wolf was still there, her eyes throwing daggers at me. What did I do? Lucas POV What was she doing?! I stormed up to my parents, were they really going to let this s**t fly? She wasn’t even yet 18 and they were going to let her rub herself up against these pups? I’d seen red, this wasn’t what I’d expected to come home to. Sure I knew she was different.. the odd occasions I’d come home for holidays I’d seen how much she’d grown. Her petite teenage body filling out and giving her the most incredible curves. She was without a doubt the definition of a glow up and she didn’t even really acknowledge it. According to my dad her focus was always training, she was a talented fighter and the pack was lucky to have her. “You don’t think that’s inappropriate?” I all but shouted at my parents, both startled by my sudden appearance. “Well it’s lovely to see you too, dear,” my mother placed a hand on my chest and gave me a peck on the cheek. I knew she was avoiding the question, but I wasn’t going to let it slide.. I turned to my father. “It’s her birthday Lucas, she’s not doing anything wrong. She’s a sensible girl.” He shrugged, neither of them were going to take my side on this. I scowled at the two of them, only to see amusement on both of their faces. “What?” I asked bluntly. They both laughed, “well we don’t have to spend the evening wondering if Evan will find her mate now, do we?” I paused, was my reaction really that over the top? “Um..” I wasn’t sure what to say, instead I felt my shoulders sag in defeat. “I’m a jerk, I know..how do you think she’s going to take it?” My mother looked at me with concern. It hadn’t gone unnoticed, my drastic shift in behaviour towards her when I turned 18. “I’m not sure.. you’ll probably have some grovelling to do. She’s pretty stubborn and strong-minded these days!” She grimaced slightly, and I sighed. I had expected as much. I glanced back at the dance floor, and then at my watch. It was nearly midnight. I shifted a little where I stood, not really sure what to do with myself. If I stuck around she’d find out, and I doubt she’d be bothered about committing a murder in public. But equally, in public was probably safer to try and avoid such an outcome. I deliberated for a moment, “perhaps I should go and er..wish her a happy birthday.” And probably say goodbye, I thought. Both mum and dad gave me a knowing look. I took a deep breath and made my way to the middle of the dance floor where Evan was in her own little bubble, ready to pop that bubble and face whatever wrath was coming my way.
