Chapter Two

Evan POV I was wrong. It did take us five hours to get ready. Five! I couldn’t believe it, standing looking at my reflection in the mirror I tried to comprehend just how this had taken so long to achieve. I considered the Luna and Kayla had also gotten ready in this time, but still. Five hours. I studied myself, they’d done a good job. My hair was in loose curls and half pinned up, Kayla knew if it fell in my face it would irritate me. My make up was flawless but natural. The Luna knew just the right amount to apply to enhance features instead of mask them. And the dress, I mean.. wow. Luna Rose had gone all out on the dress. Gold sequins, floor length, backless with a sweetheart neckline.. it hugged my figure perfectly showing off all my curves in all the right places. It was rare to see me out of gym stuff, let alone looking this good. I smiled at myself, for the first time I felt like tonight was going to be a good night. I stepped out of the bathroom and gave them both a twirl. “What do we think?” I paused, waiting for their reactions. They studied me for a moment before both of them broke out with beaming smiles and high fived each other. “Luna we did it! She looks like a girl!” Kayla laughed, I gave her a look. “Oh come now Evan, you know as well as I do she doesn’t mean that..” Luna Rose smiled, she was right but still.. mean. “Luna, aren’t we technically now late to my birthday party?” I pointed out, hoping to change the subject slightly. She gasped, “oh yes! The guests will be arriving - we had better make a move girls, come on.” And with that, the Luna was gone. Kayla reached out and grabbed my hand, pulling me after her as she followed the Luna down to the gardens. I stepped outside into what I can only describe as a magical land. Trees and shrubs were decorated with thousands of flickering fairy lights, it looked like something out of a dream. The gardens were beautiful on a normal day, but some how the Luna had made them even more spectacular. “Wow..” I breathed as we both stepped out into the warm evening air. “It’s something isn’t it?” Kayla commented, looking around at the decor herself. “My Luna has done a fantastic job, both on the party and the guest of honour,” I felt a hand squeeze my shoulder. Alpha Jacob, he was like a father to me. I looked up and him and smiled, nodding. “She’s something special, your Luna.” At that same moment, Luna Rose approached us from the bar with a bar tender following closely behind. He was carrying a tray of champagne for us, the best way to start off any celebration. “So Evan, do you like your party?” She asked, handing me a cold glass off the tray. “It’s beautiful, Luna. Thank you!” They may treat me like family but I was always courteous in how I spoke with them. They were still my Alpha and Luna, and I respected that. Their son, on the other hand, had lost some respect before he had left us for his Alpha Training. He was someone I used to be close to, but recently he’s more of an ass I’d rather ignore. Lucas POV She was going to be mad, hell.. mad was putting it nicely. I would likely end up in the pack hospital as soon as she found out. I hadn’t let anyone know I was heading home today, my training had come to an end and I needed to get back to the pack and work with my father before he stepped down. I’d delayed as much as I could but I was running out of excuses. Plus, after tonight it didn’t matter when I came home.. she’d still find out as soon as I walked through the door. I’d been nothing but a jerk to her since the moment I’d found out, and I wasn’t entirely sure why. ‘Because you are a jerk, that’s why.’ Nyx huffed, for the last three years he’d reminded me of this daily. Now it was time for me to face the music, and I was not looking forward to it. I chose to ignore my wolf, he hadn’t been impressed with my behaviour over the last three years - I’d played around probably more than I should have.. I’d definitely led one or two she-wolves on. But I needed the distraction. Evan was like a sister to me, I hadn’t ever seen her as more than that. The idea of her being my mate just..in my head at the time it didn’t work. I was immature and an i***t to think I could ignore the mate bond. Now, I had to scamper back home with my tail between my legs. I pulled up in front of the pack house, I didn’t know it was possible to feel this nervous. People were being shown through to the gardens, it looked like mother had gone all out with the guest list. There were Alpha families arriving from allied packs across the country. I knew it was a big celebration but I didn’t realise quite the lengths my mother was willing to go to hoping to find Evan her mate. Little did they know her mate was much closer to home. I took a deep breath and got out of the truck. Here goes nothing. Making my way through to the gardens, I said a quick hello to some of the neighbouring pack Alpha’s. I only had one focus right now, and that was to see Evan. The garden itself was a work of art, mother had gone all out with the decorations.. who could blame her. She saw Evan as a daughter so of course she was going to do her best work. I headed straight for the bar, I definitely needed a drink to handle this situation. “One beer please,” I ordered, drumming my fingers as I waited. “Well, hello stranger. I wasn’t sure you’d be here tonight..” I stifled a groan, turned around and put on my best fake smile. “Melissa..it’s been a while,” great. This was not what I needed.
