“I don’t get it.”
Suddenly, the book in my hand was snatched from me. I looked up, finding my sister standing above me, inspecting the book from side to side.
“Reading?” I inquired.
She scoffed at me before sitting down beside me in the sunny weather.
“No, I can read,” she replied.
Sure you can, I thought.
My wolf snickered in my head.
“I just don’t get why you read heated romances when you have an alpha you can explore those fantasies with.”
I glanced away, feeling a deep ache within me. It’s not as if I didn’t understand why someone from an outside perspective would point this out. Darren had beautiful qualities... on the outside! But look behind the curtain, and everything beneath it was rot. Just pure rot.
“I mean, you are exploring these things with him, right?” Diamond asked.
I turned back, seeing the way she raised an eyebrow with a smirk while dangling the book.
“Unless there is a secret lover I don’t know about.”
The only lovers here were Darren’s.
I held out my hand. “Can I have my book back?”
“No, answer me!”
“Diamond!”
“Come on, let’s chat like real sisters.”
“Real sisters talk about the fantasies they live out with their mates?”
Diamond shrugged before leaning back in the lounge chair, acting as if she were flipping through the book.
“Well, I don’t have a mate, but I can tell you all about my former partners.”
I knew there had been many. An omega was created for s*x, and Diamond certainly took advantage of that. She glanced at me, winking.
“I mean, maybe it will give you some ideas for you and Darren?” she jested.
“I have the book if I need suggestions.”
“These books are just that…. books.”
“You just said I should live out the fantasies within them.”
“Sure, but they can’t give you a step-by-step guide like I can,” she boasted, brushing her hair back and ensuring her ample cleavage was exposed.
As if she had timed it, some young pack members—too young for me but perfect for my younger sister—walked by. She waved at them, wiggling her fingers. They almost tripped over each other, staring at her, completely captivated.
A sting hit my heart. I didn’t want to be looked at like that, but how nice would it be to be desired?
I watched my sister blow them a kiss, smiles lighting up their faces before they hurried inside, laughing like girls with a crush. I shook my head before looking at my sister again and seeing the wide smile she sent my way.
“Men are that easy,” she told me.
I reached out, snatching the book from her.
“Maybe for an omega.”
“Come on!” she exclaimed. “You’re a luna! You’re like the dessert only a few people ever get to taste. Use that to show your alpha what he’s got!”
I contemplated her words, thankful for the advice. It wasn’t as if our mother had ever sat us down and discussed what s*x really was. But there were things Diamond didn’t understand, things I hid from my family.
“No, I’m good.”
“Goddess!” she exclaimed. “You’d think you hate s*x. Or is Darren like...”
“What?” I asked, glancing at her.
She leaned closer, cupping her mouth, and I moved toward her.
“Is something wrong down there?”
I groaned, hearing her laugh.
“I mean, alphas are known to be huge and have a large appetite. So unless your alpha can’t get it up, I would be riding—”
“Enough, Diamond! Enough,” I said.
She held up her hands, clearly hearing the warning in my tone.
“I just don’t get it. You two don’t even sleep in the same room. Weren’t you head over heels for him when you first started going out?”
Instantly, I was hit with those memories—Darren treating me like I was a princess, looking at me as if I were the only girl in the whole world. I had been eighteen and stupid.
“Yeah,” I murmured, trying to focus on my book.
“So how did it go stale so fast?”
“People change,” I whispered.
“You certainly have,” Diamond grumbled. “You used to be fun.”
I sighed, trying not to let her words get to me. There was nothing she could help me with regarding my situation anyway.
“I can still be fun,” I assured her, yet my voice lacked conviction.
“Don’t be fun for my sake.”
I turned to her, seeing her smile a little more sweetly at me, as if she genuinely wanted to help.
“Be fun for your alpha,” she said.
I frowned.
“If you don’t keep his interest, then he’ll just go somewhere else, especially if there’s nothing wrong with him down there.”
Her words brought me back...
Something hits me internally. I sit up, gasping, clutching my chest. It hurts! It’s a pain I have never felt before, like someone is clawing at me from the inside.
“D-Darren?”
I look behind me, thinking he will be there. But there is nothing but an empty space.
“D-Darren?”
I push my legs over the side of the bed, only to have to lean forward, clutching my chest again. I can barely breathe, but somehow I manage to push myself up. I stumble through the room, repeating Darren’s name, hoping he feels my distress and is on his way. I just want his warm arms around me.
“Goddess,” I groan as I reach the door.
I open it, peeking into the dark hallway.
“Hello?” My voice is barely audible.
“Somebody!” I call, but no one seems to hear me.
Where is Darren?
I can’t sense him with the pain shooting through me. Pushing into the hallway, I lean against the wall as I search the place. Maybe he is in his office?
I move downstairs, going to the next floor. The doors right ahead lead into the most marvelous place I have ever seen, but I freeze in front of them. Sounds hit my ears.
For a moment, I can only stand there, unable to comprehend them. Deep down, I understand them. I have made sounds like that myself, but they don’t make sense in this situation.
No one is allowed into the office without...
I don’t know what gets me moving, but I grasp the handles and push them down. Instantly, a scream leaves me, and my legs give out beneath me. I fall to the floor, staring up at the most horrific sight.
Right there on Darren’s desk sits a nearly naked female wolf, with him between her legs. He looks over his shoulder and merely smirks.
“W-Why?” is all I can croak out.
His smirk widens as if he doesn’t care. I don’t know this alpha. I don’t know this man!
“Maybe she will not fail at carrying my child.”
His words still echoed within me even after all those years. It wasn’t as if I had enjoyed having a miscarriage either, but somehow I had borne all the blame.
“Ro Ro!”
“Huh?” I turned to face my sister, seeing her look at me as if I had done something odd.
“Where did you go?” she asked.
“Um...”
She didn’t know. No one in my family knew.
“Just... um, no, there is nothing wrong with Darren down there,” I replied.
“Then why are you not ensuring others don’t get to enjoy that?”
I shook my head.
“We are loyal to each other,” I lied, focusing on the words in front of me, but the lie felt like acid in my mouth. “We would never do that.”
“I mean...” my sister trailed off, making me turn my head and focus on her.
“Yeah?” I inquired.
She seemed a little sympathetic, which confused me.
“What is it?”
“I have seen quite a few sides of men,” she explained.
“I can imagine,” I murmured.
“I meant personality traits!” she said before reaching out and shoving me, laughing a little too hard. “And here I thought you couldn’t even joke anymore.”
I forced a smile, trying to remain cheerful.
“Anyway, men are easily led astray,” she added.
“That’s a bit sad, looking at them like that, no?”
“No!” she exclaimed, shocking me with the force of her tone.
“No?”
“No! You need to understand how their minds and d***s work, and then you’ve got complete control over them,” she assured me.
I cringed. This conversation was becoming a little too much for me.
“I see,” I said, trying to focus on the book again, but I felt Diamond nudge me once more.
“What?” I asked, irritated.
“Are you not going to ask me?”
“About what?”
“About how to get into the head of your alpha!”
There wasn’t a single thing inside Darren’s head that I was interested in, but I could tell Diamond wasn’t going to let this go. Acting as if I were truly interested, I closed my book and focused on my sister.
“Okay, Diamond, go ahead.”
“That’s better. I knew my sister wasn’t a nun!”
I sighed, still trying to act as though I were interested, but then Diamond launched into very clear descriptions.
