A young member of the pack was about to open the door when I cut him off.
“Let me,” I said.
He bowed his head before walking away. I stepped up to the front door and opened it, only to freeze completely. It couldn’t be.
Not her! my wolf shouted within me.
“Ro Ro!” my sister exclaimed before pulling off her sunglasses, revealing her beautiful, almost diamond-like eyes. Most likely why she had been named...
“Diamond?” I asked.
She threw herself forward, wrapping her arms around me and squeezing me tightly. I felt the exaggeration of the embrace, merely patting her back. She pulled away with a wide smile on her lips before pushing past me into the house.
“I always forget how large this place is,” she remarked.
I was about to close the door when I saw something sitting on the staircase leading up to the house.
“Um, Diamond?” I inquired.
I looked over my shoulder, seeing her spin around.
“Yes, Ro Ro?”
“What’s this?” I asked, pointing to the bags.
“Oh, that,” she said. “Um... I’m staying for a few days.”
She is what? my wolf asked.
“You’re what?”
“Oh, yes, I didn’t want to go back to Mom and Dad’s,” she told me.
“But you were just at the funeral. Did you bring the bags there?” I inquired.
She nodded with a wide smile. I groaned. Could this day be any more taxing?
“Oh, come on, Ro Ro,” she said, moving up to me with her hands clasped together in front of her.
She was almost a head and a half shorter than me. Her size gave her the advantage of looking even smaller and more adorable. I knew it worked well on males, but omegas were created to entice. That was also why she outshone me with her beauty—long blond hair, incredible eyes, and a figure to die for.
“Please, please, please!”
“Why do you want to be here?” I asked. “Did something change at Mom and Dad’s?”
She groaned, looking sour as she crossed her arms.
“They think they have found a suitable match for me,” she murmured.
“So?” I inquired. “It’s not like you’re forced to be with him, whoever he is.”
“It’s an insult,” she said.
“An insult?”
“They chose a warrior.”
I frowned in confusion. “I’m not following.”
“They didn’t even try to pick a high-ranking one, or even a beta, and most certainly not an alpha!” she exclaimed.
I groaned again, rubbing my eyes with my free hand.
“Um... Diamond,” I began, knowing how her temper could be—an unusual trait for an omega. I knew I had to be careful.
“Yes?” she inquired.
“You’re... um... an omega,” I said.
“So?” Diamond stepped back, gesturing to herself in a beautiful little summer dress. “You think this can’t satisfy an alpha? I’m made for it.”
That wasn’t what I was trying to deny.
“I’m well aware of your... qualities, but alphas also seek powerful bloodlines for their heirs. That’s why they often choose females who can provide that.”
Diamond narrowed her eyes, glaring at me.
“Oh, you mean you?”
I glanced at the floor.
“Well, we can’t all be born lunas, can we? Besides, there are more alphas than lunas. They can’t be picky.”
“No, but there are female betas or high-ranking warrior women.”
“Are you really telling me, your own sister, that I should just settle?”
Her high-pitched voice, hand on her hip, and angry glare made me choose my words very carefully.
“Um...”
Yes! my wolf screamed in my head.
“No,” I replied.
“That’s what I thought.”
Why are you such a pushover? my wolf snapped.
Can we do this later? I inquired.
She huffed and retreated further into my mind.
“So, which room is mine?”
“I... guess we can settle you in for a few days,” I conceded.
“Wonderful!” she exclaimed.
“But I will have to ask Darren too.”
“I’m sure he will love my company,” she assured me before moving toward the staircase.
“Diamond, the bags!”
“Oh, yes, be a dear and grab those, Ro Ro!”
She began climbing the steps while I stood there, staring at her disappearing upstairs.
Do not f*****g grab those, my wolf ordered.
“If not me, then who?”
Get a pack member to do it. Be a damn luna!
“I’m already here, and she is my sister.”
My wolf groaned in my mind. I set my water and book aside and picked up Diamond’s bags before closing the door and heading upstairs. I was panting by the time I reached the top floor.
“Oh, this is nice!” I heard her exclaim.
I looked around, confused about which room the voice had come from, only to realize something. I hurried down the hallway, only to stare into my own bedroom.
Diamond was sitting on my bed, bouncing up and down.
“And soft!”
“Diamond, you can’t have this room.”
“Oh, why not?”
“It’s mine!” I exclaimed.
“Oh, really?” She acted as if she didn’t know, but even though she was an omega, she had keen senses.
“Yes, so pick another.”
“But I like this one.”
“Diamond!”
“We could share! Like the old days,” she said.
“We aren’t kids anymore.”
“Oh, come on, it would be fun!”
“Diamond!”
“What’s all this noise? I could hear you all the way downstairs!”
I jumped back, pressing myself against the wall as I saw Darren coming closer, an angry expression on his face.
“Oh, um...”
I heard a noise. Glancing to the side, I saw Diamond appear in the doorway.
“Darren!” she exclaimed a little too happily, sounding as if they knew each other well, even though she had visited only a few times over the years we had been mated.
Darren froze not far from me, staring at Diamond, then turned to me. I glanced down.
“What’s this?” he asked.
“Um...”
“I’m staying for a few days. Isn’t it nice?” Diamond inquired.
“You’re what?”
I looked up, finding Darren staring at Diamond, looking utterly stunned. I had never managed to make him look like that.
“Yes! I thought it was time for some quality sister time,” Diamond said.
I glanced at her, seeing the way she leaned against the doorframe and batted her eyelashes. I knew her omega qualities gave her many advantages, but would they really work on—
“Is that so?”
I turned to Darren, noticing he looked less angry. He was looking at my sister with a softer gaze, something he had never given me.
“Yes, you don’t mind, do you? It’s been ages since Ro Ro and I could just hang out now that you demand all her time.”
I kept focusing on Darren, watching in awe as his expression softened more and more. How did Diamond do that?
“No, I don’t mind,” Darren said. “You’re welcome here.”
“That’s what I thought. See, Ro Ro? Of course he wouldn’t mind!” Diamond said, giving me a little shove.
Darren turned to me, looking displeased that I had spoken for him. I cleared my throat.
“Thank you,” I said. “I’m looking forward to some quality time with my sister.”
My wolf made a gagging sound inside my head. I tried my best to ignore it.
“I knew it!” Diamond exclaimed before storming back into my room.
Darren took the opportunity to move closer to me, once more using his aura to make me feel trapped.
“Next time, warn me.”
“She just showed up,” I whispered.
“Then you mind-link me. Don’t f*****g go behind my back.” He moved even closer. “Do I make myself f*****g clear?”
“Yes,” I replied.
“Good.”
“Hey, Ro Ro, about the room? You sure we can’t share?”
I was about to reply when I looked up and saw the dark look on Darren’s face. It never meant anything good.
“You know what, Diamond?” Darren called.
“What?” she responded.
“Your sister wants your stay to be as pleasant as possible. Why don’t you keep the room to yourself while you’re here?” he suggested, staring into my eyes with that dark smirk.
His words stunned me into silence, and all I could do was look back, pleading silently for him not to do this.
“Are you serious?” Diamond shouted from my room.
“Yes. You keep it for as long as you’re staying. Ro Ro,” he used my stupid nickname tauntingly, “will find somewhere else.”
“Oh, you didn’t have to, sister!” Diamond shouted. “But if you insist.”
“She does,” Darren replied for me.
I felt tears sting my eyes, my body shaking with both anger and disbelief. But what could I do? If I went against his command, he would make sure I felt the punishment, and Darren was creative when it came to punishments—no dinner, a night in the forest, or a slap that would take days to heal because of his power.
But you’re a luna! my wolf reminded me.
And when had that ever helped me? My status had brought me into this situation in the first place.
“Well?” Darren challenged.
“W-What?” I whispered, my voice barely audible.
“Shouldn’t you help your sister unpack?”
With a dark chuckle, he turned away from me, walking down the hallway while the tears continued to sting my eyes.
“Ro Ro!”
I lifted my hands, wiping my cheeks before responding.
“Coming, Diamond!”
You’re f*****g pathetic, my wolf huffed.
“Maybe I could use a little encouragement from you?”
The day you can stand up for yourself is the day I will support you.
She retreated further into my mind again. There was nothing worse for a werewolf than having your own other half turn against you. It weakened you in ways that couldn’t be described with words.
I sighed, staring down at the bags before finally pushing off the wall. I grabbed them and stepped into the bedroom, seeing Diamond was already redecorating.
“What are you doing? You’re only staying here for a few days,” I said.
“Oh, I know, but did you know that in order to bring good energy to a place you’re staying, it should reflect the person who lives there?”
“But you’re visiting,” I pointed out.
“I’m aware,” she replied before pointing to my closet. “You can just hang up everything in there.”
“I know. My clothes are already in there.”
“Well, if you’re sleeping somewhere else, then I guess we can make room for me by taking some of yours out.”
“You brought two full bags!” I exclaimed.
“I know,” she whined, throwing her arms out. “I’m always horrible at picking what to wear. You know me.”
I sadly did, I thought, before dragging the bags into the closet. I stared at my own things, feeling so defeated, before finally finding a bag and placing a few pieces of clothing inside. Then I began hanging up my sister’s clothes. There was something almost... right about seeing her things there, as if she fit this world much better than I did.
I shook my head at my own thoughts, but it wasn’t the first time I had dreamed of us switching places.
“Oh, this looks great!”
I turned my head, seeing my sister in the closet doorway, smiling.
“You did a good job.”
“Thank you,” I murmured.
She kept smiling, then pointed to my small bag.
“Is that all?”
I nodded. “I don’t need a lot.”
“Always the minimalist,” she said, a quality I actually liked about myself, though I could hear the taunting tone in her voice.
“Right,” I whispered.
A silence fell between us. Diamond tilted her head, watching me with a puzzled expression.
“What?”
“Where will you be staying?”
