CHAPTER FIFTEEN Eva stumbled about the yard, unseeing. She could not focus on the ground, for everywhere lay remains of what had once been people. A long time ago, she admitted, but people nonetheless. A furnace lay open in front of her, the reinforced iron doors left ajar, and half-cremated bodies hanging out. When she closed her eyes, the smell still assaulted her, making her want to retch. Charred flesh and the putrid stench of decomposing bodies invaded her every time she drew breath; the sickly-sweet aroma filling her with regret she had eaten any food at all. It had been too much for both Madden and Rick, the two of them emptying the contents of their stomachs within moments of witnessing the ghastly scene.
