Chapter1
Camila arrived at her new workplace that morning. She was overwhelmed by the friendly nature of the environment. Quite several people she met in the lobby were hospitable and accessible - starting from the security man at the entrance of the building to every other face she met at the lobby.
She walked past the lobby, into an elevator.
She was interrupted by a calm-looking young man. Whom she sensed might be one of the company's staff.
She peeked at him, while he was distracted by her presence. She feigned not to notice the way he stared at her as if he was star-struck.
"Hi, you work here ?" He asked softly.
She turned to look at him "Yeah, I'm new here… "
"Oh, congratulations…! "
"Sorry! pardon my manners…I'm Philip " he said as he quickly stretched out his arm for a quick hand check.
"I'm Camila " she replied with a pretentious lack of interest.
"That's great, I will be exiting the lift soon… Do you mind if I give you a call later? "
He dipped his hand in his pocket and took out his cell phone. He handed her the phone, so she could add in her phone number.
Camila was disappointed, for their brief conversation was about coming to an end.
She was already attracted to his presence, his soft-spoken words sent goosebumps all over her.
Maybe. she thought. That might be an opportunity to get into a new relationship, after years of being single.
She showed indifference to his request as she handed him back his phone after she had entered her phone number.
The elevator stopped at the tenth floor, where he was to exit.
" I will call you later," he said calmly before exiting.
Camila got to her office floor. She walked through a well-furnished hall filled with well-spaced and organized cubicles for staff.
Those were nothing like she had imagined, her new working space was nothing to be compared to that of her former job; where she had to squeeze herself into a smaller space in her cubicle, wishing and praying for a promotion.
There, she knew she had all she prayed for. Her new salary was twice her salary at her former job.
Suddenly, she felt a sting of fear as she stood opposite Bram DeLauter's office - the interim CEO, her new boss.
Her fear was accompanied by a gush of condemnation. She condemned herself for having no remorse over her choice to spy against her new boss. She felt sorry for him.
She was paid … and she had to keep to her end of the deal
Besides, she had to do that for her family's financial freedom.
Camila already had access to vital information about Bram, she was thoroughly groomed on what her role was while she played Bram's secretary.
But while standing at the entrance to Bram's office she lost her confidence.
She wondered what made Lena quit her job.
Lena Jones was Bram's former executive secretary. Lena was more qualified than she was, educational-wise. It was through Lane's assistance that Mia, secured her a job as the company's new executive secretary.
Camila's first meeting with Lena, made her draw to the conclusion that Lena was one of those ladies who saw their job as a way to pass the time until they found a rich husband.
According to Lena, she was the seventh secretary Bram had hired in the space of six months; she claimed he sacked some while some resigned out of frustration.
Bram's office door swung open, bringing Camila back to reality. She quickly adjusted her dress in readiness.
An average-height man emerged from the office with a welcoming smile. She was sure that wasn't Bram.
She never met Bram in person before but she was certain of his looks.
Everybody knew Bram! He had been on the covers of every popular magazine and also granted several television station interviews.
His failed relationship had brought up unnecessary speculations over both his personal and work life.
She hesitated before she finally moved into Bram's office.
She met Bram standing and staring across New York, the glass wall in his office gave him the liberty of a good view from his eighteenth-floor office. From Bram's office, skyscrapers of eastern Manhattan and the pale morning sun were on display.
Despite Bram's awareness of her presence, he didn't bother to know who exactly it was.
Camila swallowed." Good morning sir"
She waited for his response before she continued.
"I'm Camila Davis… the new executive secretary"
He turned around, gave her a condescending stare and moved back to his desk.
He sat down and stared at his luxurious wristwatch as he checked for the time, Ignoring her presence.
He moved his gaze to the monitor on the exquisite glass desk. He went through his schedule for the day and dropped his gaze back on her.
"Get my laptop" he pointed out " and meet me at the boardroom" he paused reluctantly, as he made his way out of his office.
he waited for his instructions to sink into her head before he proceeded with more commands.
"Don't keep me waiting, I have an important meeting to attend!"
She hurriedly followed him with the said laptop.
All through Camila's first day at work, she battled the thought of the cold and bossy experience with her boss earlier on. She weighed her chances of accomplishing her major quest. She wondered if Bram was aware of her agenda and those behind the agenda.
But in the end, Camila decided to distract herself from the horrible experience with Bram, her mind drifting far from work to imagine a date with Phillip. She was already obsessed with meeting him again.
She told herself it didn't matter if Bram was that cold or bossy, besides she had a mission to accomplish.
He could go to hell with his bossy and cold attitude for all she cared!
Besides, she was ready to risk it.
