BABY STEPS

I threw up violently, my body spamming with pain. The shaman rubbed my back apologetically, muttering sorry under her breath. What the actual f**k? Wiping my mouth, I asked a question. “Does Yomen know the orb is in me?” “No, he doesn't,” she replied. “The witch helped him meet with the demon again. He has a more powerful way of siphoning power.” “What did he give the demon in return for that?” She wiped the tears from my face. “His mate. His true bond.” He was an evil bastard. “So why doesn't he ask the demon for more power then?” I cried out. “Why does he want me?” “Demons cannot grant power; they are cast-out beings. They can only cause chaos and destroy. Yomen wants your power to be the supreme wolf. But I fear he won't stop there.” She got up, resting on her cane. “Come with me, let me show you something.” Together we walked towards a door at the edge of the room. A cold breeze wafted from there. “Yomen had been killing witches,” she spoke. “He has been hunting for us. He heard we protected Alex, and he is coming for us.” She opened the door, and we stepped into the corridor. Across there was a glass where I could see people fighting. No they were training. Wolves and men, all wearing the dark bloods black uniform with the red crest on their chest. I shuddered from the cold. “So there is a war coming,” I said. “Yes, my dear child, and you hold all our fates in your hands.” She grasped my hands in hers. “You may not have chosen this life, but it chose you. Luna makes no mistakes.” I nodded. My eyes followed the movements of the people, watching them closely. They seemed like they had done this a million times. “Why did the Grey Wolves clan lie to me?” All I had been told was a lie. “They are in alliance with Yomen. There's a spell cast on them.” Yes, Alpha Buick had tried to attack me. “The current alpha was placed there by Yomen. They are mindless soldiers, and when it's time, they would answer his call.” Lykiri. The spell. “Is there no way to save them?” I implored. They had to be innocent in all of this. Even though all my life they had been mean to me, some good ones were amongst them. “I do not know. My daughter couldn't be saved. She died, right after she gave your mother the orb.” I nodded. Yomen had put a curse on the lives of innocent people just because of his greed. “I don't know if I want to be a part of this,” I whispered. “I need time to think.” The shaman looked up at me, a sad smile on her face. “It's okay, my child,” she said. “You will see reason soon.” I led her back into the room, feeling the soil beneath my feet move. I had someone I needed to speak to immediately, to demand answers. Donae reached us first, taking her grandmother's arm. “Let me,” she said. “Thank you. Where can I find Alex, please?” I asked her. “When you come out of the doors, go south, the living quarters are there. The last door on the left.” I thanked her and bowed to the shaman. The whistling sisters stopped what they were doing, looking at me. Picking up my shoes and walking towards the doors, it seemed I had more weight on my shoulders than when I had entered there. I needed clarity. “Child” I turned back to look at the shaman. “I am told you like to speak to the goddess. This temple is always open to you.” My lips rose up. “Thank you so much, Shaman. For explaining and for that.” Closing the door quietly, I began walking north, eager to ask Alex for the whereabouts of my mother. I mused over all the information I had been given, turning south and mumbling apologies to the people I stumbled on. I had just gotten to the room when the blonde from breakfast blocked my path. “Move,” I said. I didn't have time for feminine games, and if she wanted to ride Alex's d**k, she could for all I cared. She sneered at me. “You are not his mate, even if you are, he will never love you,” she hissed at me. Sighing, I replied to her. “I do not care about being his mate, now move. I will not say it again.” She stepped to the side, looking at me like I was on the wrong here. I pushed open the door and entered the room, making sure to slam the door with extra force, so the b***h knew her place. Alex's room was warm, his bed was a king-size, dressed with white sheets. I was very certain it was soft wool. A picture hung over the fireplace, a man, and a woman. The man looked strikingly similar to him, with the same sharp jaw and mischief in his eyes as he looked down at the woman he hugged. His parents. I stared at it, taking in the curves of her face, when he strode out from the bathroom. Naked. Alexander Lister was naked, and I got an eyeful. “What are you doing here?” he drawled. He just came out of the shower, and the water clung to his hair and lashes, his lips looked soft enough to kiss. I followed a trail of water down his chest, down his belly button, and down his- “Are you going to answer my question or keep staring at me?” My eyes jerked up to his face, looking into his own black eyes. An eyebrow was raised as if to mock me. “I need to speak to my mother.” I cleared my throat, so my voice came out without a sound. “I have questions, and I want you to take me to wherever you kept her.” He turned around, giving a view of his tight ass, and walked towards the cupboard, pulling out a pair of jeans and t-shirt. “I can feel you staring at my ass.” I turned red, caught. I was no stranger to male anatomy, but Alpha Alex's body was a work of art. He looked like he trained every minute he was awake. His member was long- I caught myself from having such thoughts. As attractive as this alpha was, I did not want to like him. He was still the man that captured me. I looked back at the picture, deciding to give him privacy to wear his clothes. He didn't wear any perfume, so the strong smell of cinnamon that wafted underneath my nose was all him. He smelled way too good. “Let's go.” He wore clothes now, praise Luna. I nodded and left the room first, knowing he would follow behind me. “It is not that way,” he said, chuckling under his breath. “You are acting like you know where she is being kept.” I blushed again, angry at how this man made me feel. “Well, you didn't tell me what way to go. And last time you took me to a place, you left me there.” He muttered something under his breath that I didn't think was of any importance to me. “Are those your parents?”, I wanted to have a small conversation. “Yes. That was them,” he replied. He picked up pace, and I practically had to jog next to him, even with my long legs. “Your mother was beautiful.” I meant that. She looked like a queen in the picture. He grunted his thanks, and I took it as a sign he wanted me to be quiet. We walked for 10 minutes, my feet were just starting to get sore when we came to a staircase leading down. The dungeons, I supposed. I made sure I copied his step, as light seemed to be more dim here. After about a hundred steps, we reached the rooms, the bars making it seem like cages. “We gave your mother a bed, and she's not caged to the walls,” he said, grabbing some keys from his jeans. “Since she is your mother and you, of course, are the white wolf,” he frowned at me, like it was my fault I was it. “Thank you, for your kindness,” I replied sarcastically. He didn't get it, so I just let it be. “She's in here,” he unlocked the door to a cage. I stepped inside and took in my mother. She was a sight. Somehow, in three days, she had become thinner, her hair was dirty with mud and her eyes red. My mother, the epitome of beauty, looked worse than when I had seen her. She stunk too. “She refused to eat or take a bath. Also refused to speak to us.” Alex said like he was reading my thoughts. I nodded, knowing how stubborn she was. I sat down next to her, she had not acknowledged my presence. “Can I be alone with her?” I asked Alex. He nodded and stepped outside. Giving us privacy. “Hello mother.”
