“Wow, this is the first time I’ve seen someone pass out just by looking at your face,” Owen joked after he was freed from his cell and glanced at the unconscious girl in her cell.
“Stop joking around, kid,” Annette said to Owen, then turned to me. “What happened? Why’d she pass out?”
“She’s my mate,” was all I could say.
After we both looked into each other’s eyes, and a bond was knotted, she lost consciousness.
“What do you mean she’s your mate? She told me she was here because she killed her mate’s lover,” Owen said.
I made a strange face. She had a mate before me? As I considered that possiblity in my head, I went ahead to break the lock of her cell and carry her in my arms.
“If that’s the case, how can she be your mate then? And what are you doing, breaking her out of the cell?” Annette questioned.
“I don’t know. She’s my mate… at least, Jax seems to think so.” I explained.
Jax was my wolf. From the moment we both entered into the dungeon, he had been running wild in my head. And the second we saw her face, he began yelling ‘mate’ all over the place.
“I’m taking her back with us. There’s something about her,” I said in a dazed tone as I stared at the small being in my arms.
“Yeah, there’s something about her! That’s because she’s the Alpha’s niece!” Owen exclaimed.
Just then, she stirred in my arms. Her pink mouth muttered the words, “I didn’t mean to.”
“Hayden, are you sure we should take her? You know Alpha Claude… is strange. What if this brings problems for us in the future?” Annette said with a logical tone.
But all sense of logic in my head had been tossed away from the moment a mate bond formed between me and the girl in my arms.
‘We have to take her. No matter what anyone says. She’s our mate!’ Jax told me.
I mentally nodded in agreement, then turned to Annette. “Who has the guts to go against me? Problem or not, I’m taking her back with me.” I said in finality.
Annette and Owen didn’t say anything again after that as we left the Red Moon pack the same way we came.

When we returned to the Crescent Moon Pack, Christopher, my second-in-command, was waiting for me in my office.
I dropped off my little mate in my room and went to see him.
“I heard from Annette that you found your mate and she’s Alpha Claude’s niece,” he said.
As I was about to respond, I suddenly felt heavy headed and pressed my palm to the side of my head.
‘Hayden, it’s coming. I’ll do my best to seal our powers, so we don’t destroy things too much.’ Jax said to me, and I quickly understood what was going on.
The terrible curse that has been tormenting me for years was about to be activated. Chris, noticing my awkward stance, grew alarmed and distanced himself from me.
“Hayden, are you about to…?”
“Yes, I am!” I said. “Get everyone out of the pack house right now. Argh!”
A sudden urge shot up from inside me, wanting me to destroy something, anything.
‘Kill him. You know you want to.’
‘This isn’t the first time you’ve killed someone. Your hands are soaked in blood.’
‘Kill yourself, you monster.’
Different voices echoed inside my head and I struggled to restrain myself.
“Get the hell out of here, right now, Chris!” I yelled.
He didn’t need to be told twice as he quickly ran past me and locked the door to my office from the outside—not like that was going to stop me from breaking down the door when the voices got too overwhelming.
In Chris’s absence, there was no one to throttle, like the voices in my head wanted me to, so I began destroying anything I could set my hands on.
‘Do you smell that?’ One of the voices in my head suddenly said.
‘Very enticing.’
‘It smells very sweet. Don’t you want it?’
In a state of delirium, I said, “I want it.”
‘Go get it, then.’
I quickly kicked open the locked door of my office and marched down the hallway, following the sweet scent.
‘Closer. Closer.’ The voices urged me.
After a moment, I found myself in front of my own room. I kicked down the door and discovered the source of the sweet scent.
It was a small creature on my bed that was staring at me with wide eyes.
‘Mate!’ Jax shouted.
‘There she is.’ The voices clouded Jax’s voice.
‘So sweet. Don’t you want a taste?’
‘Ruin her.’
‘You know you want to.’
Yes, I want to. The girl didn’t move an inch as I took predatory steps towards her. Her eyes were solely fixed on me, probably terrified to do anything else.
I got to her, and her sweet scent completely invaded my nostrils. I closed the distance between us and fixed my palm on the back of her neck, pulling her towards me.
‘Mate! I want her! Mate!’ Jax was going wild inside my head.
The other voices seemed to have quieted down at that moment. There was only me and Jax, both of us feral for the sweet-scenting girl before us.
When she was close enough with our noses almost touching, I pressed my lips down on hers.
She was as sweet as I expected her to be. I slid my tongue into her mouth and groaned unconsciously. My hand crept up to her silky auburn hair to tug on it.
I kissed her like my life depended on it. Her sweet taste was driving me to the edge. Just as I thought that there would never be an end to this ecstacy, I felt something wet against my cheek.
I slowly pulled away from her to see tears running down her cheeks. The voices that had pushed me into action had disappeared long ago. I was solely responsible for this.
What have I done?
