The sound of crashing books came from the cart echoed throughout the library. Lily had tried to catch the cart from tipping over but her arm couldn't handle the weight of the cart. She sighed as she stared down at all the books that were scattered all over the floor. Another library aid came over to help pick up the cart.
“I’m sorry,” Lily said.
The library aid scoffed at her apology. He stood up staring down at her. She felt so small as he stared at her.
“Ya know, cripple if you can’t do this job. Then you should have turned it down. You're such a nuisance to this job and to the pack. Stupid cripple,” he shouted at her.
Her older brother Zach had just come around the corner. He had heard everything and grabbed the collar of the wolf who said that to her sister. Lily watched as her older brother lifted the boy off his feet with ease.
“What did you say to my sister,” Zach growled.
The guys began to sweat very easily. He became frantic and nervous as he pleaded for help with his eyes.
“I’m sorry Beta. I… I… I am an i***t,” he stammered.
Zach let out and sigh and placed the pup down before give him another growl. The pup ran off afraid of what he might do if Zach actually got a chance. Zach was angry with anyone that would disrespect his sister like that.
“Zach, I’m fine,” Lily said quietly.
Zach turned to his sister and sighed. He ruffled her long white hair as he smiled at her.
“This is what big brothers do. They protect their baby sisters or brothers. So it's my duty to protect you,” Zach said.
He stood in front of her standing 6’2” with shaggy brown hair and emerald green eyes. He looked like their father but their mothers eyes. Zach bent down to start help picking up the books. Lily bent down picking up one book at a time. Trying to use her bad arm to help strengthen it. Zach watched as his sister's arm shook from the weight of the book. He could see it in her face. Determination to prove she was not a weakling to her pack mates.
Lily would never say anything but the way her pack treated her was really painful. It caused her to suffer from depression. But she hid that from her family with a fake smile. No one seemed to notice it was a fake smile.
As they finished putting the book back on the cart Zach looked at his sister and smiled at her.
“I’ll push the cart. You direct me on where to go,” Zach said.
“Oh I don’t want to intrude,” Lily said.
“Don’t worry football practice was cancelled so I’m free to help you and then we can head home,” Zach said.
He ruffled his sister's hair as they stood there. She smiled at him and nodded. It didn’t take too long to put all the books away. Lily put the last cart away and headed out the door with Zach. The librarian thanked Lily for her hard work for the day. Zach and Lily headed to his car. She watched as the sun was setting. As they got closer to the car Lily began to recognize the figure leaning on her brother's car.
There he stood with his messy styled brown hair. His beautiful hazel eyes hiding behind his shades. He stood 6’3” with very toned and defined muscles. He was wearing his letterman jackets with a white tank top and tight blue jeans with a pair of converse sneakers. Lily stopped behind Zach.
“Hey dude I’ve been waiting for two hours for you,” Darren said.
“Sorry I was helping Lily out,” Zach said.
Darren pulled down his shades slightly to stare at Lily. When their eyes met Lily quickly averted her eyes. Staring at her future Alpha intimated her a little bit. On top of having a major crush on him. Zach and Darren have been best friends since the moment they were born. They share the same birthday, the play on the same football team, and they’ll even be studying at the same college in town.
There were only a couple of differences: Darren was the Alpha while Zach was the Beta. Even though they were studying different majors at school. Darren was going to be studying pre med while Zach would be studying for his teaching degree.
Zach was unlocking the car for everybody to climb. Lily quickly went for the back door so Darren could sit up front. Even though she gets car sick it was only going to be a short trip. Darren and Zach were getting in the car while Lily saw her reflection. Her snow white hair was all over the place and her blue eyes were bloodshot from studying for her english test. She touched her hair gently.
“Yo weakling you getting in the car,” Darren scoffed.
Lily jumped and quickly turned her eyes to Darren.
“Oh yes sorry,” Lily said.
She got into the backseat. Zach hit Darren in the gut for his comment he made about his sister.
“Hey man,” Darren said.
“Dude that’s my sister come one,” Zach said.
“Dude come on anyone that’s going to be her mate will most likely reject her right on the spot. She is a broken pup,” Darren said.
Zach growled loudly at Darren. Lily jumped at her brother's growl. She had never heard him growl at Darren. Never in her whole life had she heard that angry growl.
“I’m just kidding,” Darren said.
He punched Zach in the shoulder laughing. Zach sighed and just started the car. Zach and Darren began to discuss their graduation plans and about their next football game. Lily just kept her head down as Darren words replayed through her head. Even though Darren had said to Zach he had been kidding. Lily knew he wasn’t and it just broke her heart knowing that.
The drive seemed to take longer than what she thought. She could feel her stomach turning the longer she sat in the back seat. She held her stomach trying to stop the pain from her stomach turning. She closed her eyes tightly and put her head down.
“Hey, Lily, we just pulled up,” Zach said.
The car came to stop and Lily slowly got out letting the air hit her. She was going to be sick. She quickly made her way into the house and slammed the bathroom door before getting sick in the toilet. Darren and Zach got out of the car after watching Lily run inside.
“What’s her deal?” Darren asked.
“She gets car sick when she sits in the back,” Zach said.
Darren noticed Lily's backpack on the backseat. He reached in to grab it from the seat when he felt how heavy it was. He handed it over to Zach before grabbing his own bag.
“Why the hell is her bag so heavy?” Darren asked.
“Oh she's studying herbs,” Zach said.
Darren waved to Zach as he headed towards his house where he found his sister making out with her mate. As he opened the door he saw his mother and father sitting at the table talking to Beta.
“Darren welcome home,” his mother said.
Darren kissed his mother cheek.
“Hello mom, dad, and Scott,” Darren said.
“Hey son,” his father said.
“Hey Darren, I’m assuming both my kids are at home,” Scott said.
“Uh yes sir,” Darren said.
Scott stood up shaking his Alpha hand and kissing Luna cheek as he was saying his goodbyes.
“Well tomorrow Lily will find her perfect mate,” Jessica said.
“Honey you don’t know that. I mean even our soon to be Alpha has yet to find his mate,” Nathaniel said.
Darren rolled his eyes at his parents as he grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge.
“It’s not like I’m not standing here,” Darren said.
“Oh stop it. Scott please wish Lily a happy birthday from us. We hope she will have a great day tomorrow,” Jessica said.
“I will. Thank you again for the coffee. Nathaniel I’ll see you tomorrow for the morning pack meeting,” Scott said.
“Yes see you tomorrow,” Nathaniel said.
Scott left closing the door behind him heading back to his house. Nathaniel and Jessica looked at their son. Darren could feel his parents eyes on him as he started to hang up his letter men jacket. He sighed as he grabbed his bag.
“You know I can feel your eyes on me,” Darren said.
“Oh honey we are just worried,” Jessica said.
“Now sweetie maybe his mate hasn’t turned 16 yet. I mean he is finishing up his senior year of high school. Or maybe he’ll meet his mate when he goes off to the college,” Nathaniel said.
Jessica glared at her husband's response while Darren snuck up his stairs to start studying for his science test tomorrow on Anatomy. As he was unloading his book bag he caught a sight of Lily. She was opening a few books on her desk. Lily took off her hoodie as she was getting ready to change into her pajamas. She stared at the scars on her weak arm.
She had multiple surgeries to try and heal what had been damaged by the werewolf bite. She ran her fingers over the scar and sighed as she felt each raise scare under her finger tips. She shook her head and began to undress. She had her back turned to her window not really thinking.
Darren would see as she touched the scars on her arms. He then noticed she had some scars on her back from the attack. He licked his lips as he stared at Lily. He quickly turned away as she went for her jeans. Darren stared at his bed averting any sight of her body. When he turned back around he saw her dressed in a pair of shorts and a tank top.
Lily was trying to tie her hair up but with her busted arm it made it a little harder to do that. She finally got her hair up in an easy clip so she could get to studying herbs. She shakily opened her books and looked out her window to make eye contact with Darren. They locked eyes for just a second but it was enough for Darren to close his curtains. He couldn’t look at her anymore.
Darren picked up his cell texting Nina to come over when his folks were asleep. Nina was I guess you’d call a friend with benefits. Though she wanted more from the relationship than what Darren could give her or wanted to give her. Darren flipped his books open to the test section to begin studying for his test.
Lily watched as he closed the curtain and felt the same pang of pain in her heart as she did when he said those words. Which made the words repeat over and over in her head. She tried to focus on studying the different herbs. She had been given this book by the pack head doctor Mrs Davis. She had apparently noticed how Lily was drawn to herbs that she had given all these books.
Once Lily had started to read these books she had decided she wanted to be an Herbalist. She could use the herbs to help her pack whenever they were hurt, or couldn’t sleep, or even for prenatal care. She wanted to help them, to prove to them she wasn’t useless. As Lily had start to read the pages of her book she was called down for dinner by her father.
“Coming,” Lily called.
She left the book open on herbs for teas. That was going to be her next thing she wanted to try. Making herbal teas to calm people down. She headed down the stairs smelling the smell of lasagna.
“That smells great dad,” Lily said.
She ran down the stairs to enjoy another family dinner.
