No more Elim

Zake “Beta Marcus was not hallucinating. The little human is real. She saved me,” I inform my pack as Mother inspects my wound. “Her father is responsible for our suffering. Something about money. I saw him. He is cruel and evil,” I add. “You were not supposed to be out there,” Father grits his teeth. He hates disobedience. I am not supposed to wander far from home because of all the traps the humans are setting for us. “Honey. He has learned his lesson,” mother comes to my rescue while Lebo gives me healing herbs to chew on. “Thanks, Sis.” I have not finished the herbs when smoke fills the air. There is fire somewhere closeby. “Alpha, the fire!” Beta Marcus cries as he runs in. “It is raging, we will not be spared unless we leave now!” I look out and only see smoke. Horrific howls fill the air. The humans are driving us out by force. “Everyone out! We head to the river!” Father shouts and howls to pass on the message go out. We are a few distance away when we hear howls of a trapped wolf. It is Beta Sam’s family. Father and Beta Marcus turn back to go and help while we head towards the river with the rest of the pack. I am taken aback when everyone stops and tries to run back to where we came from. “Forward. We can’t go back!” I shout. My heart shutters when I get the response. “There is fire ahead. We are trapped.” We stand still, completely surrounded by fire. My leg feels numb and throbbing. I was meant to elevate it, not running on it like this. We are still at that when we hear horrific howls from what our home was once. Mother and Beta Marcus’s mate fall on their knees and hold on to their chest. “No!” Lebo cries while I stare blankly at them. That is the pain of the bond severing. It means that Father and Beta Marcus are no more. My head is spinning. We are mourning but our doom is not so far. The fire has completely surrounded us and getting closer. We will all die soon. “No! No! No!” I hear her voice. I met her once, but I know that voice. “What is happening?” someone next to me asks before water splashes on my face. “It is the girl. She is taking out the flames,” someone explains. We are deep in the forest with smoke everywhere. Even with our heightened sight, it is hard to make her out. She is quiet for a moment before I hear her again and the water splashes again. I guess she is running to the river and getting water when we don’t hear her. “This way, come this way. Hurry!” We don’t wait to be told twice but follow her voice. Stupidity is following a human voice when we are in this s**t because of humans. What choice do we have? She must know this place well because a few minutes later we are over the hill away from danger. That is when we notice our loss. We have lost our Alpha, two Betas and at least twenty members. We don’t even get to have a proper service for them. I hate humans! “I don’t know if you can hear me, but this place is not safe for you,” the little girl continues. She is covered in sooth and sweat. It is hard for me to believe that she is a human. We hear her very well, but again, we can’t let her know our secret. “Detter forest is over that mountain. You will be safe there,” she points a distance away. We know the pack there, but I don’t think I will get there with my leg. She is turning back when she sees me and bends to embrace me. “Oh, Snow! You made it!” Mother and Lebo give me a mischievous look. I am never going to hear the end of this. “Oh No! Your leg!” she cries when she sees the state my paw is in. It is so swollen and hurts like hell. “I guess I have to carry you there.” Wait, what? I am so shocked when she bends, pulls me over her back and carries me like a backpack. As embarrassing this is, it does reduce the pain. “Don’t worry, Snow. I will get your home back when I am bigger.” Mother glances at me. I ignore her and the curious looks my pack members give me. I can only imagine how this looks. “So, you found yourself a human, Snow?” Lebo links. Siblings can be irritating. I shut her out. I have too much on my mind. With Father gone, I am now the Alpha. An injured Alpha with no territory. It takes over three hours to get to Detter. It would have been faster had I not been injured. We had to move at the little human’s pace and my pack refused to leave me behind. I am not complaining though. I will forever be grateful to this little human. “I will cross over this river with you, and you are there,” she tells me. She must be exhausted but she dresses my wound and bids us goodbye. We watch her cross over. We need to discuss how we are going to approach Detter pack as soon as she is out of sight. My heart literally stops when she slips and falls in the water. I don’t think twice but jump in when she sinks before her hand pops up a second later. I don’t think she can swim. She is not breathing when I drag her out. Mother gives a nod, and I shift into my human form before breathing to her mouth. “She will have our sign, Luna,” I hear someone objects. “She just saved us. She deserves our sign,” Mother responds. “What does that mean for the Alpha?” Beta Stan asks. “She is a human,” he adds. “I don’t know. All I know is that we can’t let her die. We owe her that much,” mother says firmly, ending the discussion. I quickly shift back to my wolf form when she coughs. She is alive! “Oh, Snow. You saved me!” Her spackling eyes make my heart dance. This little human is really kind and special. “Go now, Snow. I am fine. Remember, I will get your home back one day.” She waves for me to go. She is walking back towards Elim when I look back. I don’t even know her name. I hope we will meet again, little human. Two weeks later, we are adjusting to being in the Detter pack territory. They are kind and have taken us in, but this is not home. “A fourteen-year-old girl has taken her father to court for the fires that destroyed the Elim forest and left wildlife stranded and many dead. The damning evidence she presented has led to her father to be sentenced to ten years in prison.” I know who the little girl is as the television reports. “What is her name?” I mumble but they don’t mention her name. I have to find her one day, but it will be hard for me to look for someone whose name and surname I know not. “Her name will not be released because she is a minor and for her safety,” I hear reporters say. Apparently, Elim Forest is meant to be developed into a golf course, and millions have been put into the project already. She has disrupted a lot of people’s plans. I can’t help but shake my head. They destroyed our home and killed us for a golf course.
