Zake
Six year later…
I wake up from another nightmare. It’s the girl again. I was kneeling on her grave, completely gutted. I was too late. These are becoming more frequent now. I have searched all over the world for her. Where the hell is she?
The sun is rising when I let Snow take over. A sprint around the sanctuary before everyone wakes up should refresh my mind.
I am on the fifth round when a sharp pain pierces through my heart. These are becoming a part of me too.
“I am bleeding,” Snow links. This is the first.
I head back, get into the shower and let the water drop on me.
“It might be the mate bond. It is not behaving the usual way, but then again you are a special breed.”
That is what the Epsilon said. Does that mean my mate is out there? This is the only sanctuary left for our kind in the entire north pole. Why have I not met her? Unless she is living amongst humans like many of our kind have done. Is the pain I am getting from her making out with some other guy or is she hurt? How do I feel pain when I never claimed her as mine?
I massage my temples. I hate all these uncertainties.
I have just stepped out of my chambers when my Beta fills me in.
“The lead was a dead end, My Alpha. There is no sign of the human girl.”
My heart sinks. I was hopeful this time. It took time to get her father’s surname. The murderous bastard died in prison. There are, unfortunately too many Smiths in the world. Her details are just nowhere. Even her father’s documents have nothing we can use to find her. It is like she vanished on thin air. I have a score to settle with humans, but I can’t make the move without knowing where she is. I can’t risk hurting her.
“Check dangerous places. Mafia, clubs, places like that.”
He frowns at my suggestion.
“It is a hunch,” I add. I can’t tell him that I see her dying a horrific death in my dreams. Everything gets misinterpreted around here when you have not met your mate.
“We have a meeting with everyone at ten.”
I nod and head to the dining area. I curse my luck when I find Hayley having breakfast. Just my luck.
“Alpha Zake. Come and join me.”
“I prefer dining alone,” I tell her before taking a seat at the table on the opposite end.
“Oh, come on, Zake. It is just breakfast.”
She leaves her table and carries her food to mine. Now everyone is watching us. I really should find my mate soon so that all these women can leave me alone.
I get up when she sits and head out.
“Alpha Zake!”
I don’t look back when she calls. I will have to eat takeout.
I am near the door when I see Lebo. Seeing her always breaks my heart. The once jovial princess who was our parent’s joy has become so detached and depressed.
“Sis.”
She gives me a hug and heads towards a table with Lucy, the only friend she has here.
“Alpha Zake.”
“Hi, Lucy,” I greet back before turning around to join them.
“How have you two been?”
Lebo does not lift her head to look at me. My heart shutters at that. We share the mansion, but I have been away most of the time. I did not notice how unhappy she has been. I only discovered recently how she and her friend have been mistreated by other princesses.
“We have been fine, Alpha Zake,” Lucy is the one who responds.
“Would you tell me if you were not?”
She smiles.
I reach out and hold Lebo’s hand.
“I am so sorry that I have not been here to protect you, Sis. I will take care of you better from now on.”
She finally looks at me. The dull grief-stricken eyes are easy to see. She took our mother’s loss really hard. She even rejected her mate because she never wanted to feel the pain of losing someone. Lucy and I are all she has.
“If Steve so much as touch you or say anything hurtful, let me know. I will break his neck.”
She nods and squeezes my hand. Alpha Steve is the mate she rejected. He took offense and has been making her life hell. Like everything she has been through here, she never said a word. I dealt with him two days ago.
“Did you find her?” she links. We don’t talk about my human in open. Many would misunderstand.
“No. The lead was a dead end.”
“She has your sign. You should go yourself, maybe they are missing her. Snow will sense her.”
This is why I have been away most of the time, but I can’t cover the whole world on my own.
This is the only thing Lebo opens up about. I can’t help thinking that maybe finding this girl would heal both of us. Mother used to be obsessed about me finding this human girl too. Where the hell is she?
“I heard that the Alpha of Alphas is bringing in humans to serve us.”
It sounds like a statement, but it is more like a question. I let out a sigh because I have let her down so many times. I know how she feels about humans. They killed our parents and half of our pack. She is like this because of humans. Bringing them here is rubbing salt into a gaping wound.
“Yes. I was outvoted. I am sorry.”
She shrugs. I wish she would be angry or scream at me.
“Maybe she will be amongst them,” she suggests. I thought she would freak out.
“Not likely. These are criminals, Lebo.”
I have not seen her since the day she carried me to Detter, but I doubt that the kind-hearted girl would be one of those criminals.
She is quiet after this.
“I have made my preference clear to the council. Our mansion will have no humans. They will not come near our property.”
She shrugs.
I chat with Lucy and ignore all the princesses who are trying to get my attention. She is the late Beta Marcus’ daughter. She stays with us and more like a sister to me.
Two hours later, I am heading to the meeting when I meet Alpha Hugh.
“I hear that you turned my sister down, again.”
“Your sister should focus on finding her true mate.”
“She wants the emerald wolf.”
I chuckle, leave him there and walk inside the hall. He and Hayley are the Alpha of Alphas pups and get pretty much anything they want from everyone, but I am not one of those.
I am irritated when he walks in and comes to sit next to me.
“You will be part of our family. Think about it.”
He makes is sounds like an honor, maybe it is to others. I don’t need them at all.
“I will pass.”
“Father will announce you as the next Alpha of Alphas. He is retiring next year.”
I look at him. This is beyond desperation. His father is the Alpha of Alphas because I don’t want that position. Too political and I don’t have time. I would not need to wed his daughter to get it if I wanted it.
“Will pass. End of discussion.”
His nostrils flare. He is used to other Alphas bow to him. I don’t give a damn.
We are seated with all the Alphas while Alpha Benjamin addresses the audience. He tries all his charms to make this sound rosy while I roll my eyes in my head.
Hands go up the moment he ends his speech.
“Forgive my ignorance, Alpha. We are all here by some luck, you can call it grace. Our packs were eliminated by humans. They suck the life out of everything their greedy hands touch. Our worlds don’t mix. This sanctuary is all we have left in this region. Why the hell are we bringing humans here?”
I am with this Beta one hundred percent.
“They are here to be our slaves,” alpha Benjamin responds.
“We have Omegas who do the work.”
“We would do much more if Omegas focused on other work. Remember the mission. We still need to reclaim our territories they have taken over,” Alpha Benjamin explains and Counselor Robert raises her hand. I know what is coming.
“I, for one don’t approve keeping slaves. It is just beneath us and such a human thing to do.”
So predictable. She used to have a problem with Omegas doing the lowly work, now it is humans. She whines a lot, but she has the kindest of hearts. She would be a humanitarian if she was human.
We all exchange looks when many heads nod to agree with her. We knew that this would come up. Many are already feeling sorry for these humans. They have no idea.
“Alpha Zake,” Alpha Benjamin turns to me.
He likes doing this when stuck. Now I must bail him out on a decision they made against my counsel. I, however, can’t leave him out to dry and he knows it. With so many different packs here, the revolution can start at any time. We made a decision to stand as a unit.
I stand up, clear my throat and walk through the crowd.
“I know that a lot of you feel sorry for them, don’t. Let me tell you about humans. Forces of destructions. They can burn the whole forest and destroy this place in minutes. For what, you may ask. To build a golf course they will use once a month. They destroy any form of life without flinching. I would know, because when the mighty Elim Forest was destroyed, I was there. My pack lost its Alpha, my father and many of our pack members there.”
Many cast their eyes while I continue.
“Even when not intentional, an i***t can just drop a cigarette on the floor. Wildfires the least in their minute brains. That is not all they can do. They can bring big machines and flatten this place in minutes and build a shopping center. I would also know because I was there when those machines destroyed Detter forest, my second home. My pack lost its Luna, my mother there. These slaves are the worst of their kinds. Even their own don’t want them. We have been given them on a silver platter. They will serve us until death. So, it you feel a bit sorry for them, go help them, but be careful. They have killed, tortured and committed atrocious acts against their own. That is why they are here. This is their way out of a death sentence. Any more questions?”
I am already pumped up as I ask.
They all shake their heads. I have ended the brawl, but I agree with them on one point. We should have never accepted them.
Only one human should be here, My human. Where the hell is she?
