The wedding that wasn't hers
The diamond necklace around her neck gleamed under the chandelier’s glow, but it felt more like a chain than jewelry. Elena Hart stood in front of the mirror in the bridal suite of the Blackwood estate, her reflection barely recognizable.Layers of white silk wrapped around her body, hugging every curve, but the look in her eyes was anything but bridal bliss. It was fear and doubt,a sense of finality that made her throat tighten.Behind her, the door opened with a quiet click. She didn’t need to look to know who it was. The room seemed to change with his presence which was cold and sharp. Alexander Blackwood, her soon-to-be husband. He walked in with the kind of confidence that came naturally to men who were used to getting everything they wanted. His tailored black tuxedo fit like sin itself, and his eyes, dark and assessing, traveled over her reflection without apology. “Beautiful,” he said finally, his voice low, smooth as silk. “though you look like you’re about to bolt.” Elena turned slightly, forcing her trembling hands to still. “Maybe I should.” His lips curved in something that wasn’t quite a smile. “and disappoint your father? Or mine? You wouldn’t dare.” She swallowed hard, lifting her chin. “You’re very sure of yourself, Mr. Blackwood.” “Alexander,” he corrected softly. “You should start getting used to saying my name.” The way he said it — calm, teasing, dangerous — sent a chill down her spine. “I’ll only say it when I have to." “Good,” he murmured, taking a slow step closer until she could feel his warmth against her back. “Then make sure you say it when you beg.” Her breath hitched. She hated that he could provoke a reaction from her with just a few words. “This isn’t a game to me,” she whispered. “Of course it isn’t,” he replied, voice soft but edged with power. “It’s a contract, the one you signed willingly.” “Willingly?” She turned to face him now, anger flashing in her eyes. “You think this is what I want? To marry a stranger because our fathers think it’s good business?” Alexander studied her for a moment, then said quietly, “No,but you agreed anyway.” Her heart twisted. He was right ,she had agreed because her father’s company was drowning in debt, and the Blackwoods’ offer had come with one condition: marriage. A merger of families, sealed with vows and a signature. Alexander moved closer, closing the space between them until only inches separated their bodies. “Look at it this way, Elena,” he said, his tone turning smoother, colder. “You could’ve ended up with someone worse.” “I doubt that.” He smirked, lowering his voice. “You’d be surprised.” For a moment, silence stretched between them — thick, charged. His gaze dropped to her lips, and the air seemed to shift. She stepped back, clutching the edge of her dress. “We should get this over with.” He nodded once. “Agreed.”He offered his arm, but she hesitated before finally slipping her hand into his. His skin was warm, steady and infuriatingly reassuring. They walked out together, down the long marble hallway lined with portraits of Blackwood ancestors. The mansion smelled faintly of roses and money. Everything about this world felt too polished, too perfect and she didn’t belong in it. At the end of the hallway, the double doors to the ballroom stood open. Hundreds of eyes would soon be watching her ,judging, whispering, expecting perfection. “Ready?” Alexander asked quietly. Elena turned to look at him, searching his face for something human beneath that confident exterior but his expression was unreadable. “Do I have a choice?” she asked. He leaned in just enough for her to catch the faint scent of his cologne which sharp, masculine, intoxicating. “Not anymore, Mrs. Blackwood.” The words made her pulse race. Mrs. Blackwood. A name she’d never wanted. They stepped forward together. The ballroom erupted in murmurs and camera flashes. Elena’s stomach churned as she caught sight of her father, standing stiffly near the front row, eyes glistening with pride and guilt. Alexander’s mother smiled faintly though it didn’t reach her eyes. His father gave a short nod, businesslike, as if sealing a deal. Elena tried to focus on her breathing. In. Out. Don’t fall apart. As the officiant began to speak, Alexander’s gaze stayed on her, unwavering. It wasn’t tenderness , it was ownership.Like he was memorizing her every move. When it came time for the vows, his voice was calm, deep, commanding. “I, Alexander Blackwood, take you, Elena Hart, to be my wife.” Her turn came. The words trembled in her throat, but she forced them out. “I… I take you, Alexander Blackwood, to be my husband.” He slipped the ring onto her finger,it was a flawless diamond, glittering like a cage of light. The moment the officiant declared them husband and wife, applause filled the room, cameras flashed, music swelled. Alexander turned to her, one hand sliding to her waist. His touch burned through the fabric of her gown as he leaned in.It was supposed to be a simple kiss for the crowd — a show but when his lips brushed hers, it wasn’t gentle. It was a command showing claim and warning. Her heart pounded as he pulled away, his eyes locking onto hers with something fierce, unreadable. “Smile, Elena,” he murmured for her ears alone. “You’re mine now.”
